Operating System Installation

• Ubuntu –OS can be installed using CD/USB pen/ISO or try before using Live CD/USB.

• Live CD - loads the OS from CD, limited saving.

• Windows 7 – Install OS from CD/USB or Network

• Task – Find the recommended system requirements for Windows 7 professional and Ubuntu 12.04.1? (useful for the assignment )

Operating System –User interfaces

• Both the Ubuntu and Windows OS offer GUI and CLI interfaces, Linux offers KDE and Gnome GUI options.

Disk Management

• A hard disk must be prepared before it can be used.

• Partition (Allocate drive and space)

• Format (Prepare disk and adopt a filing system)

File System

• A file system is selected when the drive is formatted. Different File Systems provide different capabilities.

• Examples include FAT / NTFS (Windows)

⚫ EXT 4, EXT3, NTFS, FAT, (Linux)

• ☺ Ability to read and write from other File Systems such as NTFS and FAT.

User account Defaults

• Ubuntu provides less permissions to a user from the outset, Windows gives full permissions from the outset.

• UAC( User Account Control) has helped identify Administrative tasks (Windows).

Accounts will full system access

• Ubuntu - Root (Super User)

Work Space

• Windows 7 – My Documents

• Ubuntu – Home Folder

Groups (users belong to a group)

• Root, Users, many others

• Administrators, Power users, Users, etc

File System and permissions

• Permissions

• Windows – FAT/NTFS Permissions

• (see user accounts and permission exercise)

• Ubuntu – Folder (List, Access , Create and delete)

• File ( Read only , Read and write)

Security

• User/Group accounts

• Permissions (control access to files and folders).

• Firewall – To control traffic coming in and out of the computer.

• enabled by default In Windows 7 and not in Ubuntu. (To enable the firewall within Ubuntu, click here > Enable FW

• Antivirus – Linux has very few viruses, Windows will require AV software due to the many viruses that exist.

• Encryption – (requires the use of keys to encrypt/decrypt files) Windows 7 offers compression and encryption and Ultimate edition offer Bit locker See Video, Ubuntu Provides the same features

Device Drivers

• Identified through Device Manager• Correctly installed

• Device requires a driver

• Plug and play – New hardware is this recognised by the OS automatically and will attempt to install a driver.• If not the OS will prompt the user for a driver or request to look online.

• Ubuntu – find compatible drivers• ☺ Through a repository (Safe source)

• Less driver support overall (may require use of terminal to install the device driver)

• Lspci, lsusb or use Ndiswrapper (emulate win drivers)
