theoretical seminar

work discussion

Theoretical seminar

A reading programme has been constructed to provide a broad overview of psychodynamic thinking on risk assessment violence, criminality and perversion. You will be asked to read set texts consisting of a book chapter or article from a journal each week for discussion in the seminar; video material will also be used. The aim is to acquaint you with the major theoretical contribution and debates within this field. In the final term, these aspects will be offset by an examination of the therapeutic significance of creativity.

Work discussion

These seminars involve a presentation of a piece of interactive or observational work. You will discuss this in the group and use it to formulate hypotheses on its meaning, based on a psychoanalytic frame of reference. The work can be with an individual, family, group or institution.

Why study with us?This course will:

help you to apply the theoretical concepts to working with patients/clients in their own settingencourage you to share learning with colleagues in a mutually supportive environmenthelp you to understand the psychodynamic aspects of offending behaviour which may mitigate anxiety in the professional by a more accurate appraisal of the patient’s emotional needs, which will in turn reduce the risk of acting out or re-offending

AssessmentThis course is assessed continuously throughout its duration.

AttendanceSeminars are run on Wednesday mornings between 9.30am and 12.15pm.
