Introduction To
Civil Engineering By: Edward Gonzalez
Engineering Requirements
• To be an engineer you have to be motivated to go into the
field of science which includes:
• MATH , PHYSICS, ENGINEERING
• Take the opportunity you have now in high school
because you are going to take this into college.
• Engineering does not involve just work, but a little fun
every now and then.
• One of the requirements necessary to become an engineer
is…
Imagination
• You have to be able to go above and beyond what you
learn in school.
• It’s a competition to show off to everyone of what your
capable of and your ability to innovate new ideas so as to
improve the quality of life for those around you.
• Its also essential to think realistically because not
everything is as you see on TV.
• What you can imagine and bring into reality shows a true
innovative mind prepared to surpass our predecessors.
Innovation
• There are some things that
are constantly being
changed and upgraded so as
to improve the quality of
life for example: Bridges.
• Top: Rio Antirio Bridge
• One of the top five bridges
in the world
• Bottom: Brooklyn Bridge
Engineering Profession
• There are different types of civil engineering professions
which are:
• Structural Engineering
• Ocean Engineering
• Transportation Engineering
• These kind of engineers are required to build a bridge
and think what would be the best way to improve
transportation of goods and people.
First look
• We are going to begin working with some hands on tools
that you will use to show you how an engineer must think
when designing something new.
• Supplies:
• Magnetix:
• Partners:
Bridge Building
• Your principal has asked you to build a bridge over the highway interstate so that buses can make it in time to drop off the kids without having to waste anymore of your education.
• Time limit: 15 minutes
• Job:
• To make a bridge design using the magnetix that can hold up to 2lbs of weight at the center of the design.
• Rules to follow:
• Work as a group
• Everyone get involved
• Have fun with it!
Results
• Questions to ask yourself?
• What went wrong?
• Did the bridge hold up the weight?
• Was there a problem within the group?
• If there was then it might sometimes lead to not
communicating well amongst each other.
• Communicating with each other is the number one thing
an engineer must be able to do asides from all the math
and science.
Communication
• This is the result of a
group that can
communicate properly
during the design of a
new structure.
• This is the result of a
group with poor
communication.
• (They get sued!)
Stunt Car
• This is to test how far a stunt car can go after leaving a
ramp and to ensure that it makes it down in one piece
without breaking a part.
• Time Limit: 15 minutes
• Job:
• Make a stunt car out of Lego pieces that is 2 inches wide and 2
inches high as to mark how fast it is going before it leaves the ramp.
• Rules to follow:
• Work in a group
• Try to make a stunt car that can move fast
• Have fun with it!
Results for Stunt Car
• How did it go?
• Did your car stay in one piece?
• Did it go faster then other groups?
• And did it meet all the requirements?
• If your group met all the requirements and did a better job then most groups your design could be used to make actual stunt cars that could be tested by actual drivers.
• For those that didn’t it brings up thee question:
• Did you communicate amongst each other?
• Did you use your time wisely?
Engineers Job
• Being an engineer is great, but there is always things we
must overcome within our profession and that is:
• Is it strong and stable?
• Does it improve the quality of life?
• What is the deadline for the completion of the project?
• Is the design cost efficient?
• Being an engineer also involves being able to make
something great without emptying your wallets on a piece
of your project.
Engineering History
• Engineering dates past the Egyptians, but I want to bring
up the pyramids since they are the oldest standing
structures which have not collapsed in all this time.
• To leave behind such a structure has had all engineers
intrigued because it cannot be reproduced because we do
not know how it is standing freely.
• That’s why engineering is such a special part of society
because it is used in everyday appliances: from a house to
a tower, and a highway to a bridge.
Money
• If you do not know what you want
to do with your life work hard so
more doors can open up for you.
• Engineers are in high demand these
days and you can make six digit
figures in a year.
• You can do a lot of traveling as well
if you are able to make a good
reputation for yourself within the
engineering community.
Welcome to the world of Engineering
• Are there any questions?
Materials and
Infrastructure Engineering
• Materials and Infrastructure Engineering is a necessity to
seeing how long a structure will live as well as how it can
be used to make it stable.
• Material Engineers also cover if the materials are
recyclable for a different project.
Structural Engineering
• Is able to access how a building should be made in order
to remain standing in 50 years and if that structure is in
any danger caused by nature.
• Example:
• The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsing due to wind
resonance.
Transportation Engineering
• Aids in everyday life with transporting goods and putting
up traffic signals in order for the populace to travel and
help with the completion of plans such as:
• Highways, roads, bridges, railways, airports
• Location, Location, Location its important for all engineering
fields especially transportation because it helps to transport the
goods efficiently.
Geotechnical Engineering
• Looking at the layout of the land in order to view any discrepancies with building a structure that has a certain mass.
• This Engineering field also focuses on location, location, location and sometimes that may be the case and so they move on to seeing all the natural activities such as seismic activities, wind, rain, and landscape.
• The Burj Khalifa was built in an area with seismic activity yet they built the structure in order to compensate for all the natural occurrences.
Costal and Construction Engineering
• Building oil rigs in order to drill up oil and also building
canals that helped open up new trade routes such as the
panama canal.
• Their was also the necessity to build trade ships to help
store the oil that was drilled for back to land .
Construction Management
• When building stadiums and any other type of
engineering projects.
• It is a necessity to ensure that all the plans are successful
and that there are no discrepancies as well as getting all
the materials there.
• It is also necessary to ensure that all the deadlines and
cost requirements are met.
Environmental Engineering
• Is the building of Structures and Organization so as to
preserve nature.
• Organization such as the EPA which regulates laws and
requirements that are necessary to follow to protect the
environment.
• It looks at how to use energy efficiently and recycling
everything we use rather than it just becoming a waste
product.
Water Resources Engineering
• Water Resource Engineers protect and create sources of
water through the building of dams and water towers.
• This is a dire necessity because without water the people
would not be able to sustain life within the area.
• It is also necessary that the water be treated and recycles
and used which follows a cycle so that the people can
have access to water immediately especially with the
population growth each year.
