ST 502 The Word (Doctrine of Scripture) Robert Gonzales, Jr. Page 1 1/14/16 INTRODUCTION: [READ PSALM 19] Several months ago, CNN featured an article that highlights China’s current efforts to build FAST, which is an abbreviation for “Five- hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope.” This gigantic dish will be the size of 30 football fields when its finished, and its purpose will be to detect extraterrestrial life beyond this world. But FAST will not be the first attempt to pick up communication from outer space. In 1963 the world’s currently largest single-dish radio telescope was installed at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. And for over 50 years, Arecibo’s massive dish has been searching for radio signals from life in outer space. To this date no alien messages have been received. And yet, scientists continue their relentless pursuit to hear a communication from another world. As the world listens for a word “from beyond,” the Christian church believes we already have such a word. Someone from “outer space,” or better, Someone from beyond space, has communicated to us. We believe that we have a word from the Triune Creator and Lord of the entire universe. 1 And this revelation from God is the focus of Psalm 19. As you may have noticed, the structure of Psalm 19 reflects a two- fold view of revelation: (1) “The heavens declare the glory of God” (19:1ff). This is a reference to what theologians have come to call general, natural, or creational revelation. General revelation is God’s communication to man through creation, providence, and human conscience. (2) “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul” (19:7ff.). This is a reference to what theologians designate special, supernatural, or covenantal revelation. Special revelation is God’s communication to man through special acts and words, which ultimately became inscripturated in the Bible. 1 I have borrowed, modified, and adapted Robert Reymond’s introduction to the doctrine of revelation in A New Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith (Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1998), 3.

SpecialrevelationreachesitsredemptivegoalinthepersonandworkofChristwhoistheIncarnateWordofGod.Ihavethreepremisestoestablishthispoint.

a)God’sultimaterevelationhascomeinthepersonofHisSon.

b)TherevelationofChristhasbeenmediatedtousthroughtheapostolicwitness.

IwanttodevelopthispointmorewhenweconsiderthecanonoftheNT.ButfornowIamsimplyremindingyouoftheobviousfactthatChristHimselfdidnotwriteanyoftheNTbooksofScripture.Instead,Hechosecertainindividuals(theNTapostlesalongwithNTprophets)whowouldmediateHisrevelationtothechurch.Thereforewemustpaymuchcloserattentiontowhatwehaveheard,lestwedriftawayfromit.Forsincethemessagedeclaredbyangelsprovedtobereliable,andeverytransgressionordisobediencereceivedajustretribution,howshallweescapeifweneglectsuchagreatsalvation?ItwasdeclaredatfirstbytheLord,anditwasattestedtousbythosewhoheard,whileGodalsoborewitnessbysignsandwondersandvariousmiraclesandbygiftsoftheHolySpiritdistributedaccordingtohiswill(emphasisadded;Heb2:1-4). WehavearguedthatJesusChristisGod’s“finalword.”AllrevelationpriortoChristpointedtoHim.WehavealsoarguedthatJesuschosecertainmeninordertomediatethisfinalrevelationtothechurchandtheworld.NowwearearguingthatthisapostolicwitnesstothepersonandworkofChristhasbeencompleted.Inotherwords,weshouldnotlookforanynewrevelationfromGod.IbelievethisconclusionisimpliedinatextlikeEphesians2:20:[Thechurchhasbeen]builtonthefoundationoftheapostlesandprophets,ChristJesushimselfbeingthecornerstone.Theterm“foundation”canrefereither(1)tothebasisuponwhich

whenwespeakof“thefoundationofthechurch,”wemayhaveinmindthedoctrinalbasisuponwhichthechurchisfounded,orwemayhaveinmindthehistoricalbeginningswhenthechurchwasfirstestablished.Biblically,bothideasaretrue.TheNTapostlesandprophetsaretheauthoritativebasisuponwhichthechurchisbuild.Andtheiractivityrepresentstheinitialstageintheprocessofthechurch’sconstruction.Buttheimportantquestionis,WhichofthesedoesPaulhaveinview?

Inthiscontext,Ibelievethatthesecondmeaningisprimarilyinview.Isaythisbecause,inthecontext,Paulisdiscussingthechurchintermsofitsplaceinthehistoryofredemption(Eph2:11-13,19-22;3:1-10):Thereforerememberthatatonetime[thepast]youGentilesintheflesh,called“theuncircumcision”bywhatiscalledthecircumcision,whichismadeinthefleshbyhands—rememberthatyouwereatthattime[thepast]separatedfromChrist,alienatedfromthecommonwealthofIsraelandstrangerstothecovenantsofpromise,havingnohopeandwithoutGodintheworld.Butnow[thepresent]inChristJesusyouwhooncewerefaroff[thepast]havebeenbroughtnearbythebloodofChrist….Sothenyouarenolonger[thepast]strangersandaliens,butyouare[thepresent]fellowcitizenswiththesaintsandmembersofthehouseholdofGod,built[aoristtense,i.e.,completedactivity]onthefoundationoftheapostlesandprophets,ChristJesushimselfbeingthecornerstone,inwhomthewholestructure,beingjoinedtogether,grows[presenttense,i.e.,ongoingactivity]intoaholytempleintheLord.Inhimyoualsoarebeingbuilttogether[presenttense,i.e.,ongoingactivity]intoadwellingplaceforGodbytheSpirit(emphasisadded;Eph2:11-13,19-22). Sothe“havingbeenbuiltonthefoundationoftheapostlesand

prophets”inEphesians2:20isareferencetoearlychurchhistory.The“beingjoinedtogether,”and“growingintoaholytemple,”and“beingbuilttogetherintoadwellingforGodbytheSpirit”areareferencetoongoingchurchhistory.Thus,wecaninferfromthispassagethattheapostolicstageof

churchhistoryhasbeencompleted.Theapostlesaredead,andweshouldexpectnonewapostles(Acts1:21-22;1Cor.15:7-8).Wemustconclude,therefore,thattheapostolicwitnesstoChrist,whoisGod’sfinalword,hasbeencompleted.

Insummary,God’sstreamofspecialrevelationhasreacheditshistoricaldestination—therevelationofJesusChrist.Thisfinalrevelationhasbeenmediatethroughtheapostolicwitness(andNTprophets).AndthisapostolicwitnesstoChristhasbeenselectivelydepositedintothefinalformofspecialrevelation,namely,theScripture(John20:30-31).Since,therefore,specialrevelationhasreacheditsultimateandfinal

destination,namely,theInscripturatedWordoftheIncarnateWord,wehaveabiblicalrationaletoaffirmtheteachingoftheConfessionwhenitasserts,Therefore,theLordwaspleasedatdifferenttimesandinvariouswaystorevealHimselfandtodeclareHiswilltohischurch.TopreserveandpropagatethetruthbetterandtoestablishandcomfortthechurchwithgreatercertaintyagainstthecorruptionofthefleshandthemaliceofSatanandtheworld,theLordputthisrevelationcompletelyinwriting.Therefore,theHolyScripturesareabsolutelynecessary,becauseGod’sformerwaysofrevealingHiswilltohispeoplehavenowceased(2LCF1.1b).
