MATERIALS

Carbon SteelChannels made from high-quality carbonsteel are continuously roll formed toprecise dimensions. By cold working thesteel mechanical properties are increased,allowing lightweight structures to carry therequired load. Corrosion resistance ofcarbon steel varies widely with coating andalloy. See “Finishes” for more detailedinformation.

Stainless SteelStainless steel channel is available in AISIType 304 or 316 material. Both arenon-magnetic and belong to the austeniticstainless steels group, based on alloycontent and crystallographic structure. Likecarbon steel, stainless steel exhibitsincreased strength when cold worked byroll-forming.

Several conditions make the use ofstainless steel ideal. These includereducing long term maintenance costs,high ambient temperatures, appearance,and stable structural properties such asyield strength, and high creep strength.

Type 304 resists most organic chemicals,dyestuffs and a wide variety of inorganicchemicals at elevated or cryogenictemperatures. Type 316 contains slightlymore nickel and adds molybdenum to giveit better corrosion resistance in chlorideand sulfuric acid environments. AluminumStandard aluminum channel is extrudedfrom aluminum alloy 6063-T6. Strut fittingsare made from aluminum alloy 5052-H32.

The high strength to weight ratio ofchannel made of aluminum helps greatlyreduce the overall cost of installationthrough ease of handling and field cutting.

Aluminum owes its excellent corrosionresistance to its ability to form analuminum oxide film that immediatelyreforms when scratched or cut. In mostoutdoor applications, aluminum hasexcellent resistance to “weathering”.The resistance to chemicals, indoor oroutdoor, can best be determined by testsconducted by the user with exposure tothe specific conditions for which it isintended. FiberglassWe offer two fire retardant (FR) resins forstrut systems, polyester and vinyl ester.Both resins are ideal for corrosiveenvironments or nonconductiveapplications with moderate strengthrequirements. Some common types ofenvironments where Vinyl Ester Resins arerecommended, that Poly Esters are not,are paper mills, most any metal platingoperation and any condition with

concentrated levels of Chlorine, [ Cl- ].Please consult our fiberglass corrosionresistance charts on pg. 183 for specificchemical recommendation data.

Unlike other base materials depicted inthis catalog, fiberglass exhibits uniquephysical property changes when operatingin elevated temperature conditions that area fraction of increase compared to steel oraluminum. Thus, it is advised against usingfiberglass in temperatures greater than200° F.

The fiberglass strut systems aremanufactured from glass fiber-reinforcedplastic shapes that meet ASTM E-84, Class1 Flame Rating and self-extinguishingrequirements of ASTM D-635. A surfaceveil is applied during pultrusion to insure aresin-rich surface and ultraviolet resistance.

While polyester is sufficient for most uses,vinyl ester is suitable for a broader range ofenvironments.

FINISHES

Zinc CoatingsZinc protects steel in two ways. First itprotects the steel as a coating andsecond as a sacrificial anode to repairbare areas such as cut edges, scratches,and gouges. The corrosion protection ofzinc is directly related to its thickness andthe environment. This means a .2 milcoating will last twice as long as a .1 milcoating in the same environment.

Galvanizing also protects cut and drillededges.

Electrogalvanized ZincElectrogalvanized Zinc (also known aszinc plated or electroplated) is theprocess by which a coating of zinc isdeposited on the steel by electrolysisfrom a bath of zinc salts.

A rating of SC3, our standard, provides aminimum zinc coating thickness of .5 mils(excluding hardware, which is SC1 = .2mils).

When exposed to air and moisture, zincforms a tough, adherent, protective filmconsisting of a mixture of zinc oxides,hydroxides, and carbonates. This film isin itself a barrier coating which slowssubsequent corrosive attack on the zinc.This coating is usually recommended forindoor use in relatively dry areas, as itprovides ninety-six hours protection insalt spray testing per ASTM B117.

Chromium/ Zinc Chromium/ Zinc is a corrosion resistantcomposition, which was developed toprotect fasteners and small bulk items forautomotive use. The coating applicationshave since been extended to larger partsand other markets.

Chromium/Zinc composition is anaqueous coating dispersion containingchromium, proprietary organics, and zincflake.

This finish provides 500 hours protectionin salt spray testing per ASTM B117.

Pre-Galvanized Zinc(Mill galvanized, hot dip mill galvanizedor continuous hot dip galvanized) Pre-galvanized steel is produced by coatingcoils of sheet steel with zinc bycontinuously rolling the material throughmolten zinc at the mills. This is alsoknown as mill galvanized or hot dip millgalvanized. These coils are then slit tosize and fabricated by roll forming,shearing, punching, or forming toproduce our pre-galvanized strutproducts.

The G90 specification calls for a coatingof .90 ounces of zinc per square foot ofsteel. This results in a coating of .45ounces per square foot on each side ofthe sheet. This is important whencomparing this finish to hot dipgalvanized after fabrication.

During fabrication, cut edges and weldedareas are not normally zinc coated;however, the zinc near the uncoatedmetal becomes a sacrificial anode toprotect the bare areas after a short periodof time.

Hot Dip Galvanized AfterFabrication (Hot dip galvanized orbatch hot dip galvanized)Hot dip galvanized strut products arefabricated from steel and then completelyimmersed in a bath of molten zinc. Ametallic bond occurs resulting in a zinccoating that completely coats all sufaces,including edges and welds.

Another advantage of this method iscoating thickness. Strut products that arehot dip galvanized after fabrication have aminimum thickness of 1.50 ounces persquare foot on each side, or a total 3.0ounces per square foot of steel,according to ASTM A123.

The zinc thickness is controlled by theamount of time each part is immersed inthe molten zinc bath as well as the speedat which it is removed. The term "doubledipping" refers to parts too large to fitinto the galvanizing kettle and, therefore,must be dipped one end at a time. Itdoes not refer to extra coating thickness.

The layer of zinc which bonds to steelprovides a dual protection againstcorrosion. It protects first as an overallbarrier coating. If this coating happensto be scratched or gouged, zinc'ssecondary defense is called upon toprotect the steel by galvanic action.

Hot-Dip Galvanized After Fabrication isrecommended for prolonged outdoorexposure and will usually protect steel for20 years or more in most atmosphericenvironments and in many industrialenvironments. For best results, a zincrich paint (available from B-Line) shouldbe applied to field cuts. The zinc richpaint will provide immediate protectionfor these areas and eliminate the shorttime period for galvanic action to “heal”the damaged coating.

DURA-GREEN™ and DURA- COPPER™ Epoxy CoatingsDURA-GREEN and DURA-COPPER epoxycoatings are water borne epoxy coatingsapplied to B-Line products by a preciselycontrolled cathodic electro-depositionprocess. This process is accomplishedusing a conveyor to transport channeland fittings through several cleaning,phosphatizing and application stages priorto being baked (See diagram below).

This custom-designed paint system isused for painting all channels, channelcombinations, slotted angle, and fittings.

Samples are selected on a routine basisfor Salt Spray (fog) testing to verify thequality of the finish. These tests areperformed in accordance with ASTM B117and evaluated and related according toASTM D1654 (Tables 1 & 2).

The DURA-GREEN and DURA-COPPEREpoxy coatings have been tested andlisted by Underwriters Laboratories inaccordance with “Standard for SurfaceMetal Raceway and Fittings, UL5” and

“Standard for Pipe Hanger Equipment forFire Protection Service, UL203”.

Due to DURA-GREEN’s organically basedcomposition, it seats itself into poroussurfaces more completely and efficientlythan zinc coatings. As these porouscaverns are filled along the materialprofile, the outer finished surfacedemonstrates an increased smoothuniform plane which producesconsiderably less off-gasing when tested.

DURA-GREEN channel meets or exceeds100 level clean room standards. This wasconfirmed by testing the channel inaccordance with Boeing (PCL) Standards,which are more stringent and completethan ASTM E595-93. DURA-GREEN wasfound to be a superior finish, due in part toits proven application process.

PVC CoatingAnother of the corrosion resistant coatingsoffered by B-Line is PVC (polyvinylchloride), applied over steel or aluminumchannel and fittings. The PVC coatingprocess begins by cleaning the product

thoroughly. A bonding coat is applied tothe part and then preheated to atemperature above the melting point of thecoating powder. The product is thenpassed through a fluidized bed of vinylplastic powder where the powder particlesmelt, adhere and flow out to form asmooth continuous coating. The thicknessis controlled by the base metal temperatureand the immersion time in the bed. It isthen post-heated to complete the fusion ofthe outer surfaces.

The standard coating thickness of B-Line’sPVC coated products is 15 mils (.380 mm),plus or minus 5 mils (.125 mm). Since thechemistry, not the thickness of vinyl plasticPVC determines longevity, a coating of 10to 20 mils (.250 to .500 mm) is more thanadequate. If the corrosive conditions aresuch that the plasticizers are leeched out,a thicker coating will do little to extend thelife of a coated product.

For certain environments, a plastisoldipped PVC coating is available onrequest.

PVC coating depends totally on theconcept of encapsulation attached to thebase metal by a bonding agent. If any holeor discontinuity occurs, the corrosiveaction can undercut the base metal to apoint where all that remains is the PVC.

In the event of field cuts or any otherdamage to the coating, a liquid PVC patch,available from B-Line, must be applied tomaintain the integrity of the coating. Afterthe installation is complete, a thoroughinspection should be performed to assurethe absence of voids, pinholes, or cuts.

WELDING

The welding procedures used in thefabrication of our steel products are inaccordance with American WeldingSociety Standards. To achieve thehighest quality in our manufacturingprocesses, our welders follow standardsset by AWS Code.

Spot WeldingSpot welded back-to-back channel ismanufactured using a modern DCpowered resistance welder controlledby a microprocessor. This produces aseries of spot welds with speed andconsistency. Consistency is one of themost important advantages in specifyingback-to-back channel. Variables such as

weld sequence, speed and duration arecarefully controlled and monitored by asophisticated electronic control system.A statistical quality control program,combining destructive and non-destructive testing, is used to ensurehigh quality welds.

MIG WeldingMIG welded, more properly called gasmetal arc welded (GMAW) combinationchannels and fittings, are producedwhen physical dimensions or certaincombinations require a weld processother than automatic spot welding. Thesame quality control requirements areimposed on MIG welded and spot-welded products.

Quality AssuranceOur Quality Assurance Program hasbeen developed and implemented forcompliance with ISO9001:2008. Wealso complies with various industrystandards and specifications. CORROSIONAll metal surfaces are affected bycorrosion. Depending on the physicalproperties of the metal and theenvironment to which it is exposed,chemical or electromechanical corrosionmay occur.

Atmospheric CorrosionAtmospheric corrosion occurs whenmetal is exposed to airborne liquids,solids or gases. Some sources ofatmospheric corrosion are moisture, salt,dirt and sulphuric acid. This form ofcorrosion is typically more severeoutdoors, especially near marineenvironments.

Chemical CorrosionChemical corrosion takes place whenmetal comes in direct contact with acorrosive solution. Some factors whichaffect the severity of chemical corrosioninclude: chemical concentration level,duration of contact, frequency ofwashing, and operating temperature.

Storage CorrosionWet storage stain (white rust) is causedby the entrapment of moisture betweensurfaces of closely packed and poorlyventilated material for an extendedperiod. Wet storage stain is usuallysuperficial, having no affect on theproperties of the metal.

Light staining normally disappears withweathering. Medium to heavy buildupshould be removed in order to allow theformation of normal protective film.Proper handling and storage will help toassure stain-free material. If productarrives wet, it should be unpacked anddried before storage. Dry material shouldbe stored in a well ventilated “lowmoisture” environment to avoidcondensation formation. Outdoor storageis undesirable, and should be avoidedwhenever possible.

Galvanic CorrosionGalvanic corrosion occurs when two ormore dissimilar metals are in contact inthe presence of an electrolyte (ie.moisture). An electrolytic cell is createdand the metals form an anode or acathode depending on their relativeposition on the Galvanic Series Table.The anodic material will be the oneto corrode. Anodic or cathodiccharacteristics of two dissimilar metalswill depend on the type of each material.For example: If zinc and steel are incontact, the zinc acts as the anode andwill corrode; the steel acts as the

cathode, and will be protected. If steeland copper are in contact, the steel isnow the anode and will corrode.The rate at which galvanic corrosionoccurs depends on several factors:

1. The relative position on the GalvanicSeries Table - the further apart materialsare in the Galvanic Series Table, thegreater the potential for corrosion of theanodic material.

Metals in descending order of activity in the presence of an electrolyte.

2. The amount and concentration ofelectrolyte present - an indoor, dryenvironment will have little or no galvaniccorrosion compared to a wetatmosphere.

3. The relative size of the materials - asmall amount of anodic material incontact with a large cathodic material willresult in greater corrosion. Likewise, alarge anode in contact with a smallcathode will decrease the rate of attack.

HolesA variety of pre-punched 9/16” (14.3 mm) diameter holepatterns are available in our channels. These holepatterns provide an economical alternative to costlyfield drilling required for many applications.

KnockoutsWhen used with series B217-20 Closure Strips,knockout channels can be used to provide aneconomical U.L. listed surface raceway. Channels arefurnished with 7/8” (22.2 mm) knockouts on 6” (152 mm)centers, allowing for perfect fixture alignment on spansup to 20’ (6.09 m).

Design Load (Steel & Stainless Steel)The design loads given for strut beam loads are based on a simple beam condition using an allowable stress of25,000 psi. This allowable stress results in a safety factor of 1.68. This is based upon virgin steel minimum yieldstrength of 33,000 psi cold worked during rolling to an average yield stress of 42,000 psi.For aluminum channel loading multiply steel loading by a factor of 0.38.

WeldingWeld spacing is maintained between 21/2 inches (63.5 mm) and 4 inches (101.6 mm) on center. Through highquality control testing of welded channels and continuous monitoring of welding equipment, B-Line providesthe most consistent combination channels available today.
