IAML Annual Conference in Montreal 69

The above statement was strongly seconded by Rika Maniates, representing the International

Musicological Society. We were then invited by the President to submit a proposal in writing. We agreed to recommend to the presidents of both societies that they set up a joint commitee to

prepare a paper describing how documentation and scholarship may be integrated into the activities of the IMC and how the IMC might support the work of member organizations such as ours, that have, until now, been relegated to the role of spectators in the IMC.

IAML Annual Conference in Montreal

Réunion annuelle de l'AIBM à Montréal

Jahrestagung der IVMB in Montreal

The annual conference of IAML in 1975 was held on 17-23 August at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, with the Canadian Association of Music Libraries as host. As usual, IAML met together with

IASA, the International Association of Sound Archives, whose meetings this year were organized jointly with the Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC). In addition, the Music Library Association (MLA) held its annual summer meeting during the conference and included an open seminar (arranged by its New York State Chapter) on Music Library Service in North America.

IAML's second conference on the North American continent thus brought together members from no less than four associations in the fields of music librarianship and recorded sound collecting. If this sometimes made for crowded working sessions, it also made for a lively exchange of views and information.

Relief from the rather heavy working schedule was provided by a concert of the McGill Chamber Orchestra under Alexander Brott, a recital by Maureen Forrester and John Newmark, and a one-day excursion to Ottawa, with visits to its magnificent National Arts Centre (including a concert by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec) and the National Library (with exhibitions of Cana dian recorded sound and early musical Canadiana), as well as various other social events.

During the conference, there were one IAML Board and two Council meetings. The main items of business are summarized below:

1. The General Secretary reported that membership figures were down slightly since the previous year. The cancellations followed no significant pattern, and apart from the UK Branch (cf. below) there had been no major reactions to the increased dues. Branches where the number of individual members was low compared with institutional members, were asked to make a special effort to

improve these figures. The new By-Laws adopted by the General Assembly in Jerusalem would be published in Fontes

(they have since appeared in 1975/1-2, p. 21-31). A corresponding revision of the Rules of Procedure was expected to be completed in time for the Bergen meeting in 1976.

New publications sponsored by IAML included the Guide for Dating Early Published Music com

piled by D. W. Krümmel and the Commission for Bibliographical Research (Joseph Boonin, Hacken

sack, N. J. and Bärenreiter, Kassel &c., 1974), and a bulletin, Musikbibliothek aktuell, of the Subcom

mission Reference and Community Services of the Public Libraries Commission (Deutscher Bibliotheks

verband, Berlin, 1974). Charlotte van der Pot reported that the International Basic List of Literature on Music, compiled by the Subcommission Public Music Collecting, was to appear in the autumn. (It has since been published by the Nederlands Bibliotheek en Lectuur Centrum, Den Haag 1975.)

70 IAML Annual Conference in Montreal

2. The Treasurer reported on the finances and submitted a budget for 1975-76. Four annual issues (instead of three) of Fontes were foreseen, as well as faster delivery to US and Canadian members. A reduction in printing costs of some DM 6,500 would result from the change to composer setting. The

budget was unanimously approved. 3. Future meetings. The annual conference in 1976 would take place in Bergen, Norway, on 15-21

August. For 1977, a congress was scheduled in Mainz, German Federal Republic, probably early in

September. No invitation had been received for 1978, but various alternatives were mentioned. 4. On the recommendation of the Board and the chairmen of the Subcommissions on Education

and Training, the Council decided to establish a new working committee on Education and Training. (At its inaugural meeting the following officers were elected: Don L. Roberts, President, Bent Chri stiansen, Vice-President, Huib Deetman, Secretary. The committee has been named the Commission on Education and Training.)

5. The General Secretary reported on a letter from the UK Branch, expressing dissatisfaction on the part of its members with the increased dues, the lack of communication within IAML and the contents of Fontes. The letter was discussed with the British representative, Elizabeth M. Hart, informally during the week, and at the second Council meeting. The new editors of Fontes, Rita Benton and André Jurres, described the plans for including more informative material, for better review coverage, and a broader spectrum of topics. The Council also approved a suggestion to publish a leaflet explaining IAML's aims and activities. The President and the General Secretary were to make a formal answer in writing to the UK Branch, embodying the main points of the discussions from the

point of view of the Board and Council. (The letter was sent on 25 September; copies are available on

request from the General Secretary.) 6. The Board decided to try to set up proper IAML archives by collecting the records of all former

officers and commission chairmen. This task would be undertaken by the General Secretary, and for the time being the archives would be located at the Swedish Music History Archive, Stockholm. All

present and former officers were asked to cooperate in this effort. 7. The President of the Cataloguing Commission, Dr. Kurt Dorfmüller, reported that the question

of a special IFLA working group on an International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) for music in cooperation with IAML was still not settled, although a decision was expected shortly. (The group has since been established.)

8. In this connection, the question of IAML's relations with IFLA were brought up. After some discussion it was resolved that the costs, conditions, etc. of joining should be ascertained from IFLA. If these were satisfactory, IAML would join IFLA as a regular member.

9. A letter from the Danish Branch was read, asking for earlier and more detailed advance informa tion of the annual meetings. The General Secretary expressed complete agreement, and would make

every effort to have the invitations for Bergen distributed early in 1976. 10. A resolution against UNESCO's treatment of Israel, signed by individual IAML Board members,

was read. The resolution was directed to the International Mysic Council, and intended for presenta tion at its forthcoming meeting in Toronto in September. Council members were invited to sign in

support, as would be all conference participants. (Cf. further the report on the IMC meeting elsewhere in this issue.)

11. IAML's official representative to the IMC, Prof. Barry S. Brook, reported on the agenda of the Toronto meeting. There was widespread dissatisfaction with conditions within the IMC and its rela tions to IAML and it was decided that IAML should (a) express its concern with the financial situation of the IMC, (b) call attention to the IMC's unresponsiveness to the needs of member bodies, and (c) invite an IMC representative to attend future IAML conferences.

Anders Lönn, General Secretary
