Polymer International 27 (1992) 211 Introduction This is the fourth of five issues of Polymer Inter- national in which a total of some 60 key papers from ‘Polymer ’91’ are being published. ‘Polymer ’91’ was an International Symposium on ‘Polymer Materials: Preparation, Characterization and Properties’ held in Melbourne, Australia from 10 to 14 February, 1991. ‘Polymer ‘91’ was sponsored by the Inter- national Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and by the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. It was organized by the Polymer Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). ‘Polymer ’91’ was the largest conference on polymer science yet held in Australia. There were 480 participants, of whom 165 came from 35 countries other than Australia. The program included 39 Invited Lectures and 242 Contributed Papers (aomprising 147 lectures and 95 posters). The themes of the Symposium incorporated synthetic organic chemistry to produce new polymers, determination of molecular structure by numerous techniques, and the performance of polymer materials in a wide variety of applications. The papers being published in Polymer Inter- national from the ‘Polymer ’91’ program comprise 32 contributions from Australia and 27 from 10 other countries. The titles illustrate the wide diversity of polymer materials-from microelectronics to marine adhesives, from optical waveguides to wool. Characterization techniques range from laser light scattering to magnetic resonance imaging. Introduction

This is the fourth of five issues of Polymer Inter- national in which a total of some 60 key papers from ‘Polymer ’91’ are being published.

The ‘Polymer ‘91’ Committee is indebted to Ken Busfield as the Australian Guest Editor for organizing this series of papers.
