Normally, woodturning tools aremadeofveryhard,wear-resistant HSS or PM steels that can be worked on water-stones only with enormous effort. We recommend using DICTUM DS 150 L or Creusen 7500 TS, Tormek, ProEdge, grinding machine. Their special grinding jigs enable a fast and consistent sharpen-ing,evenwithcomplicatedcutting edge geometries. After sharpeningtheouterbevel, polish the inner burr by hand with a multiform stone or a profiledleatherhoningwheel, similar to the process used for gouges.

Workshop recommendation »Sharpening for Woodturners« During the course, you will learn how to sharpen tools by hand and using sharpening machines like the Tormek, the Sorby ProEdge or the circular saw grinding machine with precision and in a way that protects the tool. This includes learning how to create a reproducible polished section and a traditional orfingernailgrind.SpecialgrindssuchastheEllsworthspecialgrind willalsobecovered.Participantswillbeshownhowtosharpengouges, chisels, parting tools, scrapers, ring tools and hook tools. The course is designedforbothnovicesandexperiencedwoodturnerswishingtoexpandtheir skills.

We recommend participating in one of our one-day sharpening courses. For more information see www.dictum.com/workshops

Sharpening machines for dry grinding

Themainargumentinfavourofdry grinding is the rapid material abrasion, which is as good as impossible when using a wet sharpening machine with certain types of steel. This reduces the grinding time.

Sharpening tips depending on sharpening stone diameters

The settings on the honing guides of sharpening machines, DICTUM DS 150 L, Creusen 7500 TS and Tormek, depend on the wheel diameter of the sharpeningstones. However, thestonediametersofgrindingwheels(exceptCBNanddiamondgrindingwheels)decreaseundertheabrasiveactionofsharpening and dressing.

Tormek:The reduction in the diameter of grinding wheels, which gradually abrade, canbecompensatedfortoacertainextentbyusingtheTurningToolSetterTTS-100. We therefore recommend using the TTS-100 with the Tormek sharpeninginstructionswhenpossible. However, iftheusedstoneisalreadyheavilyworn, theremayalsobeslightchangesinangleandgeometry, evenwhen using the TTS-100. This can also occur when combining both sharpen-ing systems (pre-grind with the Double-wheeled Grinder/regrind with the Tormek). In order to obtain uniform results with this machine during each sharpening process, we recommend using CBN or diamond grinding wheels.

DICTUM DS 150 L, Creusen 7500 TS:If the small wheel diameter (150 mm) of this machine is reduced by addition- al 10 mm, there is a risk of hollow-grinding and thus a weakening of the bevel.Furthermore,thegeometriesofthegrindwillchange.Inordertoobtain uniform results with this machine during each sharpening process, we recommend using CBN or diamond grinding wheels.

CBN and Diamond grinding discs problem solver:TheuseofCBNanddiamondgrindingwheelspreventsstonediameterreduc-tion,thusavoidingcuttingedgegeometriesfrombeingchanged.Furthermore,thesewheelssavetime(notrueingisnecessary)anddonotgeneratetoomuchheat(reducedriskofoverheating)underhighspeeds(double-wheeledgrinder).Inaddition,CBNoffersaverygoodprice-performanceratio,astheslightly higher acquisition costs are compensated for by the more robust and aggressivecrystalstructure.

Normally, scrapers cut viaaburronthe cutting edge. This burr can be created in a similar way to the burr on a scraper blade, but it usually forms naturally during sharpening. Therefore, wet grinding is not recommended for scrapers, because the created burr is not »strong« enough. You also should not polish the cutting edge aftersharpeningtoremovetheburr.
