in your fields that simply do not

perform as well as others. As,

variable rate planting and applica-

tions are growing in popularity,

Deere has responded by putting

this software in your own hands.

A popular feature of Operations

Center is its Agrian powered

prescription file writer that you

can use to write your own pre-

scription files based on your own

data without expensive third

party advising. However, you can

also use this software as an open

forum to work with any trusted

crop advisor you already have, or

any trusted partner with whom

you grant permission. Operations

Center is not set up to com-

pletely replace Apex but it will

contain the most useful features

from Apex.

The bottom line is that every

Precision Agriculture has come

such a long way since the begin-

ning. We’ve gone from basic

AutoTrac to section control and

on to variable rate applications,

seeding and planting. You may

have years of data at your dispos-

al. There is no doubt these tech-

nologies could be of great use to

your farm if you utilize them to

their fullest potential. As times

get tougher the JD Equipment

team is here to help make your

operation as efficient as possible.

One of the best tools we have at

our disposal is John Deere’s Op-

eration Center.

Operation Center gives you the

tools to manage all aspects of

your farm. The technology is

here to seamlessly pull together

years of data that you can com-

pare and contrast, analyze and

dissect to better understand how

your ground performs. The years

of simply shooting for maximum

yields are over. With today’s

market, farmers are more inter-

ested in shooting for maximum

profit. This is going to mean clos-

er attention to detail and active

management at every step of the

process. There are always areas

farmer big or small should have a

place where they can not only

conveniently archive and store

planting, harvesting, and applica-

tion data but more than that, Op-

eration Center also serves as a

dashboard to your farm. The user

friendly design lets you assign

tasks, receive notifications, and

even check the weather. The most

exciting feature of Operation Cen-

ter is that new applications are

coming out every day from third

party companies that partner with

John Deere. This means that Op-

erations Center is here to stay

and will be the most versatile farm

management software on the

Market.

“The highest level of

accuracy at all speeds

5mph to 10mph”

ExactEmerge Planting Technology The ExactEmerge planter unit is a

complete rethinking in how to get seed in

the ground with less skips, less doubles

and much more accuracy. The secret is in

the Industry-exclusive brush belt delivery

system. Instead of seed falling down a seed

tube from the meter where it can bounce

off the sides and cause variations, The

brush belt design carries the seed gently

down to the trench greatly reducing the

coefficient of variation at all speeds.

Features:

• High-performance vacu-

um meter

• Brush-style doubles elimi-

nator

• Dual electric motors

• Planters ordered with

ExactEmerge row units

will come pre-installed

with SeedStar Mobile

hardware.

ExactEmerge—Design Based on Four Key Agronomic Principles

• Planng Window: ExactEmerge allows producer to increase tradional

planng speeds while maintain seed placement accuracy

• Populaon: Electric motor a5ached to seed disk allows producer to change

populaon on-the-go; no need for mechanical adjustment

• Uniform Spacing: The revoluonary Brush Belt eliminates seed tube bounce

and is ground speed matched, resulng in a dead drop of the seed in the

trench

• Even Emergence: With Acve Pneumac Downforce, the trench is dug at a

constant depth and the Brush Belt delivers the seed to the bo5om of the

trench, every me.

John Deere ExactEmerge, the agronomic advantage

An Agronomic Take on the latest Tech by

Adam Shepard, M.S., CCA

JD Equipment, Integrated Solu(ons Department

Much was made of the operang speed of the John Deere ExactEmerge planter upon its release. JD Equipment,

along with likely every other John Deere Dealer markeng the ExactEmerge planter, used what agronomic data

was available to try and educate customers. As the data was presented we were met with some skepcism and

numerous “what if” scenarios that we have all likely encountered once or twice throughout our careers.

Much of our discussion last winter revolved around the Coefficient of Variaon (CV) measurement that spoke to

the accurate seed placement of the John Deere ExactEmerge Brush Belt delivery system (pictured below). The

key to the CV data we presented was that seed planted and measured at a CV of less than .33 would suffer no

agronomic reducon in yield potenal through the planng process. This measurement shows the accuracy of

the seed placement at various operang speeds compared to compeve planters on the market.

With another cropping season behind, addional data has been collected and analyzed by agronomy and equip-

ment researchers. This me the study from Purdue University focused not only the singulaon and accurate

plant spacing but the emergence, uniform plant growth, and ability to hit target populaons at planng speeds

of 5, 7.5, and 10mph with 4 replicaons.

Target Populaon

Results of the 2014 research confirm the claim that the John Deere ExactEmerge planter is capable of accurately

planng a wide range of populaons at varying speeds.

Corn V Stage & Plant Heights

Corn V stage measurements and plant heights were taken at three points during the growing season. As you can

see from the table below, that planng speed had no influence on either plant height or V stage. So why is that

important? These measurements indicate that with the uniform singulaon and plant spacing we are able to

achieve the desired “picket fence” stand of corn and soybeans with repeatability in a wide range of speeds as

well as populaons to be5er fit our wide range of operator & organizaonal preferences.

In summary, this study should show the agronomic advantage and wide operang range of the John

Deere ExactEmerge planter without sacrificing accuracy or agronomics. While this tool has the ability to solve

some of our opmum planng date concerns with increased operang speeds, the features of the direct

drive motors on both the planter meter and the BrushBelt delivery system offer agronomic advantages that

are beneficial to producers no ma5er his/her desired planter speed.

Planter sec(on control economics & agronomics

OMen mes the technology side of farming gets met with the struggle of overcoming the price of investment to jusfy

the purchase. Most of the technological advancements in agriculture are either integrated or come as an add-on to an

exisng piece of iron. For the cost of investment the majority of mes the box or acvaon on the screen leave grow-

ers feeling a li5le empty when compared to the price tag. The important thing to remember is your grower has made

the investment in the hard iron to do the job efficiently and effecvely, but as with any system there are limitaons to

what can be done. While the list of on-farm technology that offers benefits to growers is vast, for today let’s sck with

the theme of planters, talk row clutches and secon control.

In Ohio we are fortunate to have one of the leaders in Precision Farming research, John Fulton back at Ohio State Uni-

versity. During Dr. Fulton’s me at the University of Auburn he and his colleagues focused on precision agriculture and

educang growers on the benefits of precision technology, not only as a savings of inputs but also the agronomics of

over and/or misapplied applicaons. In this brief I would like to refer to the Alabama Extension publicaon ANR-2217

tled “Automac Secon Control Technology for Row Crop Planters”.

During a two-year study in Alabama research-

ers obtained seed savings from 1-12% with

automac secon control (ASC) with an aver-

age savings of 4.3%. When they added in the

use of GPS guidance systems, the ASC they

obtained addional savings from between 3-

35% depending on the shape of the field. The

image below illustrates some common

planng situaons and how ASC and Individu-

al Row Control have the ability to save seed

and reduce over planng situaons.

Planng Individual

Speed (mph) Inches

7.5 9.3587 2.0924 0.2236

10 9.4397 1.7711 0.1876

Page 7: Introducing JD Operation Centercdnmedia.endeavorsuite.com/images/organizations... · access (RDA) Sessions *Compatible Equipment Required • Organizational Invitation to a JD Equipment

Based on the average seed savings of 4.3% that savings sufficiently covered the cost of purchasing the equipment and in-

stalling on the planter - assuming there was zero yield loss impact on over planng.

When the study adds the agronomic value of assuring 100% plant coverage that minimizes uncovered and over planted

areas that sacrifice the yield of the crop, addional savings and increased producon can occur. The potenal yield loss and

harvest loss factor for corn in this

two year study was measured at

17% and 8.7% respecvely. Har-

vest loss and yield reducon can

be seen in the image leM.

When we take into account the lower yield and the reduced ability to effecvely harvest poorly filled ears of various shapes

that value is captured in the form of a harvest loss calculaon. Using the image above and the chart of lost revenue/acre it

becomes very evident that not only are we over-spending on seed by not ulizing ASC technology but we are also sacrific-

ing agronomic best pracces by reducing yield due to overpopulaon and a significant reducon in harvestability.

The table below shows potenal per acre revenue loss assuming a 120 bu./ac average at a sell price of $5.00/bu.

I know the yield and prices used in the calculaon don’t represent our area yield average or likely the price we will be sell-

ing our crop for in 2016 (and potenally 2017) but the concept is the same. It all comes down to minimizing inputs while

achieving the maximum economical yield for your operaon. It is also important to assess the equipment your operaon is

interested in buying, as much of the equipment purchased in the past 3-5 years was ordered with this technology installed

from the factory. If you’re interested in a piece that has this technology installed you may just need an acvaon for your

display or something small to capture the benefits of this technology.

While it may take more than one year to pay for the investment depending on the number of acres you cover each year,

the connuing increase in seed expense will reduce the amount of me it takes your operaon to realize the savings this

technology brings. Couple seed savings with sound agronomics and the ease of harvest on the end rows by minimizing the

amount of double planted areas in your fields’ leads to a choice if your operaon is looking to invest in planter technology

for the 2016 season and beyond.
