Introduction

In creating an interoperable implementation, it may be helpful to understand specific implementation choices made by other products implementing the same standard. For example, portions of the standard may provide only general guidance, leaving specific implementation choices up to the application implementer; in some circumstances, it may be helpful for other implementers to understand those choices. In addition, products often vary from or extend standards either because of application deviations or to allow for use scenarios not originally envisioned by the specifications. Documentation of those variations and/or extensions may also be helpful to other implementers.

The implementer notes contained in this document provide information about how Office implements Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) v1.1 [ODF], including areas where additional detail may be of benefit to other implementers and areas where the product is known to vary from or extend the specification.

Glossary

MAY, SHOULD, MUST, SHOULD NOT, MUST NOT: These terms (in all caps) are used as defined in [RFC2119]. All statements of optional behavior use either MAY, SHOULD, or SHOULD NOT.

1. Word allows multiple styles to map to the same outline level. According to the ODF 1.1 spec, each outline level may only have one style associated with it.

On save, Word takes the following steps to determine which style should be included for each level under the outline style element:

First, Word looks for styles named Heading 1 to Heading 9 to see if any of them have numbering as a part of the style. If one of these styles has numbering, then that style is associated with the corresponding level in the outline style.

Next, Word looks for other styles to see if any of them have an outline level and numbering. If so, the first style that encountered with both a unique outline level and numbering is put into the outline-style.

2. On save, Word writes out text content within a element under the following conditions:

the paragraph has an outline level

the paragraph's style is referenced by the outline style

3. On save, paragraphs with numbering, whose style is not in the outline-style but have a style:default-outline-level attribute in their paragraph style, are written out with within a list.
