What is an Idiom?

It is a combination of words that has a figurative meaning due to its common usage. An idiom's figurative meaning is separate from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which it is made. Idioms are numerous, and they occur frequently in all languages. There are estimated to be at least 25,000 idiomatic expressions in the English language.

Phrasal Verbs

Page 28: Intro Unit and Unit 1 Vocabulary Contest Geography, Clothes and Accesories, Food, Adjectives, Social expressions, Invitations, Idioms and Phrasal Verbs

The term phrasal verb is commonly applied to two or three distinct but related constructions in English: a verb and a particle and/or a preposition co-occur forming a single semantic unit. This semantic unit cannot be understood based upon the meanings of the individual parts in isolation, but rather it must be taken as a whole. In other words, the meaning is non-compositional and thus unpredictable.
