Safety Precautions
PROPER GROUNDING Never power up the indoor equipment not yet connected to a proper grounding system. There is risk of equipment failure and/or electrical shock. Ensure that both the indoor and outdoor grounding systems measure a path resistance less than 10 Ω.
ESD PROTECTION Always use proper antistatic protection (i.e. grounding bracelet, antistatic bags, etc.) when handling the IDR-C cards. Parts bearing the ESD sign (see left) have ESD sensitive exposed components.

Chapter 3: Before starting the Installation
Site Requirements and Preparation
• The equipment shelter of the indoor units should preserve a
temperature within the operating range –5oC to +55oC. • The IDR-C operates only on negative power supply, from –40 V dc
to –60 V dc. • The positive pole of the power supply source at the IDR-C station
should be grounded. • The suggested value for the fuse of the power supply source at the
IDR-C station is 10 A.
Supplementary Accessories
The following accessories required for the installation and cabling of
the IDR-C IDU are not included in the package.

Location The power connector is located on the front panel of the IDU PSU.
Scope The connector is used for the connection of –48 V dc power supply
voltage.

Location The DS 1-4, DS 5-8, DS 9-12, DS 13-16 connectors are located on the
front panel of the IDU MUX.
Scope The connectors are used to connect four E1 tributaries each (thus 16 x
E1 tributaries).

Location The NMS1, NMS2 connectors are located on the front panel of the IDU
CMS.
Scope The connectors are used to connect the LCT and the NMS. You can
use the connectors alternatively.

AUX
Location The AUX connector is located on the front panel of the IDU CMS.
Scope The connector is used to connect:
• Internal and External Alarms • Four RS-232 Service Channels • One 2 Mbit/s Service Channel (G.703, 120 Ω, balanced) (only for the
16 x 2 Mbit/s CMS version) • Two 4W telephone lines (A and B) for simultaneous bi-directional
communication with 4-wire telephone sets (600 Ω, balanced) Note: The service bit rate of the service channels depends on the traffic capacity of the system provided in the following table:

TRIB 1-4 Connector
Location The TRIB 1-4 connector is located on the front panel of the IDU CMS
(version for 4 x 2 Mbit/s tributaries).
Scope The connector is used to connect four E1 tributaries.

Location The 10/100 ETHERNET connector is located on the front panel of the
IDU CMS (version for Ethernet interface).
Scope The connector is used for the LAN connection.

ODU Connector
Location The ODU connector is located on the front panel of the IDU
Framer/Modem/Cable Interface Unit.
Scope The connector is used to connect the ODU through an IF cable.

Item Description
1 N-type, male, R/A connector 2 N-type female connector
Scope This cable connects the IDU with the IF cable coming from the ODU.
The cable protects the ODU connector on the front panel of the IDU against mechanical damage, which might occur in case of direct connection of the heavy IF cable.
Type RG-142
Connectors The one end of the cable is terminated with an N-type female
connector while the other end is terminated with n N-type, male, R/A connector.
Length 1,5 m
From/To The cable connects the ODU connector on the front panel of the IDU
to the IF cable coming from the ODU.

Scope Four such cables connect the DS connectors of the IDU with a special
conversion panel the manufacturer provides on customer’s request.
Note: The aforementioned conversion panel provides BNC receptacles for the 2 Mbit/s tributaries in case the D-Sub 25 female connectors on the IDU front panel are not convenient to the customer.
Connectors The one end of the cable is terminated with a D25 male connector
while the other end is terminated with eight BNC female connectors.
Length 70 cm
From/To Each cable connects one of the DS connectors on the front panel of
the IDU to the aforementioned conversion panel the manufacturer provides on customer’s request.

Disassembled Cables
Preparing the Power Supply Cable
Tools • Blade
• Cross-headed screwdriver • Soldering iron (65 W approximately)
Accessories • D-Type 3 Female power connector (provided)
• Power Supply cable, 2 x 2,5 mm2 stranded, PVC, black, 300 V (the manufacturer provides 5 m of cable)
NOTE
For the 1+1 topology, prepare two power supply cables, one for every power supply unit.
NOTE
The manufacturer can provide on request a power supply switchboard with all the necessary accessories.
Preparing the cable
To prepare the cable, follow the steps below:

1 Strip the wires of the cable as shown below:

2 Unscrew the two screws of the provided female power supply connector to dismantle it.
3 Insert and solder the brown wire to the A3 pin of the connector and the blue wire to the A1 pin of the connector.

4 Assemble the connector again using the two screws.

Preparing the IDU Grounding Cable
Tools • Special crimping tool for insulated grounding lugs
• Blade
Accessories • Insulated grounding lug for a 6 mm2 cable, screwed on the IDU
(provided) • Insulated grounding lug for a 6 mm2 cable (provided) • Grounding cable, 6 mm2 stranded, PVC, green/yellow, 450 V (the
manufacturer provides 3 m of cable)
Prerequisite Estimate the length of the grounding cable needed up to the grounding
point of the rack.
Preparing the cable
To prepare the cable, follow the steps below:

1 Strip cable to dimensions shown:
2 Slide the insulated grounding lug over the wires:
3 Crimp with the special crimping tool. 4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other end of the cable. In the
end of the procedure the cable will look as below:

Cables not provided
This section provides info concerning cables not provided by the
manufacturer.
E1 Tributaries Cable
The IDU receptacles for the E1 tributaries cables are D-Sub 25
Female.
LCT Cable
The IDU connector for the LCT cable is D-Sub 9 Female.
NOTE
To prepare the cable, see the NMS1, NMS2 connectors pin-out, on page 10.
Ethernet Cable
The IDU receptacle for the Ethernet cable is RJ-45 shielded (100Base-
TX). You will need a cross-over UTP CAT5 cable.

To install and cable the IDR-C IDU, follow the steps below taking into
consideration the following Caution:
Only trained and qualified personnel should install or replace this equipment.
Step Action
1 Install the IDU (page 22). 2 Ground the IDU (page 23). 3 Switch-off the IDU PSU(s). 4 Connect the E1 tributaries (page 24). 5 Connect the power supply to the IDU (page 25). 6 Connect the RG-142 tail cable (page 26). 7 Connect the LCT (optional).

Installing the IDU
Ensure 1U free space above and below the IDU in the rack for ventilation purposes.
Tools Philips screwdriver for M5 screws
Accessories Four M6 x 12 screws, four washers and four M6 caged nuts (not

Procedure Use four M6 x 12 screws and mount the IDR-C on the rack:

Grounding the IDU
Prerequisites • This procedure requires a prepared grounding cable according to the
description on page 19. • Make sure that the installation premises is equipped with a reliable,
low-impedance ground connection system.
Tools Philips screwdriver for M5 screws
Accessories • Grounding cable (see par. “Preparing the IDU Grounding Cable”, on
page 19) • M5 x 10 screw (provided, it is screwed on the right side panel of the
unit)
Procedure To ground the IDR-C, follow the steps below:
Step Action 1 Use the M5 x 10 screw and the two washers provided to
connect the yellow grounding lug to the IDU.
2 Connect the other insulated grounding lug to the rack
grounding bar.

Connecting the E1 Tributaries
Prerequisites This procedure requires that you have prepared the cables for the E1
tributaries.
NOTE
The manufacturer can provide on request a special conversion panel with BNC receptacles for the 75 Ω E1 tributaries. The conversion panel is connected to the IDU through special D25/BNC conversion cables (see page 17) provided by the manufacturer.

connectors on the front panel of the IDU MUX.
In case you have the conversion panel
If you have the aforementioned conversion panel with the BNC receptacles for the 75 Ω E1 tributaries and in order to connect the E1 tributaries to the IDU, follow the steps below:
Step Action
1 Plug the D25 connectors of the conversion cables to the DS 1-4, DS 5-8, DS 9-12, DS 13-16 connectors on the front of IDU.
2 Remove the washer and the nut from each BNC receptacle of the conversion cables.
3 Insert the BNC receptacles from behind the conversion panel and then screw the washer and the nut from the front to secure.
4 Connect the E1 tributaries to the appropriate BNC receptacles of the conversion panel.

Connecting the Power Supply
Prerequisites • The IDR-C operates only on negative power supply, from -40 V dc to
–60 V dc. • The positive pole of the power supply source at the IDR-C station
should be grounded. • The suggested value for the fuse of the power supply source at the
IDR-C station is 10 A. • This procedure requires that you have prepared the power supply
cable as described on page 18.
Accessories Power supply cable (see par. “Preparing the Power Supply Cable”, on
page 18).
Procedure To connect the power supply to the IDR-C, follow the steps below
taking into consideration the following Caution:
Risk of arc production at the contacts of the IDU PSU connectors! Do not connect the power supply to the IDR-C before you make sure the positive pole of the power supply source at the IDR-C station is grounded.
Step Action
1 Switch-off the power supply source at the IDR-C station. 2 Switch-off the PSU(s) of the IDR-C.
3 Connect the power supply cable(s) to the station power supply source.
4 Plug the power supply cable(s) to the power supply connector(s) on the front panel of the PSU(s).
NOTE
In 1+1 topology, cable both PSUs of the IDR-C.

Connecting the RG-142 Tail Cable
Why to make the connection
You should connect the IF cable coming from the Outdoor Unit to the RG-142 tail cable to protect the ODU connector on the front panel of the IDU against mechanical damage which might occur in case of direct connection of the heavy IF cable.
Accessories RG-142 Tail Cable (provided)
Procedure Connect the male connector of the tail to the ODU connector on the
front panel of the IDU.
NOTE
The female connector of the tail will be connected to the N-type connector of the IF cable coming from ODU.
