We wish him the best of luck on the next chapter of his life and look for- ward to hearing all about African adventures. Thank you for all the incredible work you have done, not only in 3/4 but at Richmond Primary over your time here. You will definitely be missed! INTO THE UNKNOWN WITH GRADES 3/4

This Term in Area 2, Grade 3/4 students have been learning all about Explorers in our History unit, ‘Into the Unknown’. News From School Council

Following feedback from the school community, students and teachers, School Council on Wednesday night approved the plan to renovate the corridor space beside the Grade 3/4 area into a new classroom.

Thank you to all those who responded to our survey. As you can see in the graph below this renovation option was first choice for the majority of respondents. There were a number of comments expressing concern for the loss of valuable playspace which would come with the installation of a relocatable building. There was also concerns expressed about losing our Library space to being a classroom. We hope that by completing this corridor renovation that both these may be avoided for the near future and allow us to have more flexibility in how our different classes are organised. A number of comments were focussed on ways the school may pursue fund raising toward building a 4 room level above the current building. Such an option would cost about $4 million+ which would be a huge fund raising challenge (we are raising currently about $100,000 each year.) This type of option could only be achieved with a significant government contribution.

I would again like to thank all our respondents. Your feedback is important as it will help inform our School Review which will be conducted by DET in Term 1 of 2019. Your comments and insights will be included as part of this process and will help us in developing our next 4 year Strategic Plan.

The next step is to get our planning concept for the area approved by the Department of Education and then to engage our architect in beginning the design for this space.

A big factor will be our enrolment numbers for 2019. We will know more about this after our Prep Enrolment application process closes at the end of term. I will let the school community know in Term 3 what the profile will look like for next year.

Last Wednesday some students from Grade 3-6 went to division cross country at Boroondara. We all had heaps of fun even though it was windy and cold. We all tried really hard, and well done to these students that got through: Gemma Gowans, Archer Donaldson and Grace Morriss. Good luck to them at regionals this week. Thanks to Cecilia(student teacher),Gary and Russell for helping us at cross country.

RPS Writing Program

Some of you will have noticed, in our student reports, reference to Writers Notebook. Writers Notebook is an im-portant supplement to our formal writing framework, 6 Traits +1 of Writing. Students enjoy this weekly writing experi-ence of unpacking what it is like to be a writer, and spreading the experience out on the page according to their own imaginative interpretation of life and story. Their Notebooks are for experimenting with writing text types such as poetry, narrative, reports and procedures. Writers investigate ideas and delve into the vocabulary that supports these ideas. They plan their writing with drawings and diagrams and THEY make the decisions about which ideas will end up as a ‘published’ piece of writing. We want them to feel like writers. Teachers support students in conferences to keep improving as writers.

At RPS we adopted 6 Traits +1 of Writing four years ago as a framework for formal teaching of writing. The 6 + 1 Traits are: Ideas, Organisation, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions plus Presentation. Please feel free to talk to any of our teachers if you would like more information about our Writing Program.
