Dear Student,

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the University of Leicester and to ourISWP designed especially for international students.

The University of Leicester is a leading international university which is involved in thepursuit of excellence in both teaching and research. A degree from this University willtherefore be a major achievement which will certainly help to promote your future career.

Our Welcome Programme aims to provide an introduction to both studying and living inLeicester. You will be shown around the University campus and given a guided tour ofthe City of Leicester. The International Students’ Services Fair will provide informationabout the excellent student support services which will be available to you during yourstudies here. There will be many opportunities for you to ask questions plus free time andsocial activities during which we hope that you will meet new friends.

The beginning of term is an extremely hectic time. We hope this gentle introductionbefore the start of the academic year will provide time for you to acclimatise, to get usedto the British way of life, to answer those pressing questions and generally to settle in.

INFORMATION DURING THE ISWP

Where can I ask questions about theISWP?During the ISWP, there will be an Information Desk in the entrancehall of the Students’ Union Building from 09.00 to 16.00 every day.Use this Information Desk to sign up for walking and cycling tours,collect your Discover Leicester Bus Tour ticket and ask questions.

You will also be able to ask unofficial questions about living andstudying in Leicester by leaving your questions in the ‘Living inLeicester’ Question Box on the ISWP Information Desk – these willbe answered by current students at the ‘Living in Leicester’workshop on Friday.

What is in my Welcome Pack?You will have received a Welcome Pack when you registered ontothe ISWP. It contains important material, such as information aboutUniversity services, a campus map, a free phone SIM card withsome free credit and other useful information. Spare WelcomePacks are also available at the ISWP Information Desk if you loseyour pack.

What sessions can I attend and should Ireserve a place?We would recommend that you attend the morning lectures asthey contain essential information. These are held in large lecturetheatres. Other events are optional and you can come to as manyor few sessions or events as you like. There are a limited number of

spaces on some of the workshops due to room sizes. We do notask you to pre-book for any of the workshops but you shouldbook for all the tours. Please be aware that you may not alwaysbe able to go to your first choice of session. There are a varietyof workshops and events which run at the same time in order tominimise disappointment and you are advised to get to the roomearly. On page 4 there is space to write the time and date ofyour preferred sessions so you won’t forget!

What are Student Assistants and howcan they help?Our Student Assistants are the friendly and helpful peoplewearing blue shirts with a University of Leicester logo. They areexperienced and knowledgeable students who want to help youto settle in and will answer your questions.

Where can I access the Internet duringthe ISWP?If you are in University Accommodation, then you will be able toaccess the internet in your room. You can also access theinternet from the Library IT Room 1 (ground floor) from 12:00-16:00 on Monday to Thursday during the ISWP. On Friday, KenEdwards computer room 101 is available. It is always a good ideato contact your family and inform them of your safe arrival.

How do I travel around Leicester?

SAFETY

Am I safe in Leicester?

Leicester is a safe place to live, but as in all cities you need to beaware of your own safety and security. There is an importantsafety talk during the ISWP facilitated by the campus policeofficer and there will be more safety information available at theServices Fair on Wednesday afternoon.

FOOD AND DRINK

Where can I buy food and drink on campus?

Most of the catering outlets are located in the Charles WilsonBuilding, the David Wilson Library and the Students’ Union.Please ask the student assistants if you need directions or lookat the leaflet in your Welcome Pack.

For students in catered accommodation (in Oadby)dinner will be served in Beaumont Dining Hall at 17:30every night during the ISWP except for Thursday whereit will be served at the earlier time of 17:00 so that youwill have time to prepare for the Mayor’s Reception.

Where can I shop for groceries and otheressentials?

The University main campus is located within walking distance ofMorrisons supermarket. It is about 10 minutes walk from boththe Nixon Court and Freemen’s Common accommodation sites,and approximately 15 minutes from Opal Court andRegent/Salisbury accommodation sites.

Oadby Student Village Halls are located close to Asdasupermarket. During term-time, there is a free Asda Bus servicethat operates from City Living accommodation sites. Look out forthe Asda Bus posters in your accommodation giving informationabout the day of the week on which this service operates.

During the ISWP, Student Assistants will help guide you toMorrisons, Asda and the Chinese Supermarket so that you canbuy essential items. Leicester also has one of the biggest open-air markets in the UK located within the city centre. You willfind an open-air fruit and vegetable market and a closedmarket selling meat, fish and cheese.

The Safety Bus will be able to take you back to youraccommodation throughout the ISWP from Tuesday – Fridaybetween 21.00 - 00.00 for £2.

Buses during the ISWP

The number 80A Arriva bus will depart for campuseach morning from Oadby Student Village during theISWP at:07:45 08:15 08:45 09:15 09:45

Bus stops are on Manor Road, Oadby (outside Stamfordand Digby Halls).

Please note that this bus also runs via Mary Gee Houses(Ratcliffe Road).

The same service will operate from campus back toHalls of Residence each afternoon duringthe ISWP at:16:15 16:45 17:15 17:45 18:15

A single ticket costs £2.10; a day ticket is £3.60 and the driverwill give you change if you do not have the exact cash. Aweekly pass costs £15.00. You can buy an Arriva City PlusStudent Ticket at the Services Fair for £280 for the academicyear. This gives you unlimited travel within Leicester on anyArriva bus.

A free Ausden Clark bus service has been arranged forOadby and Mary Gee students to travel to and fromevening events on campus and this service will depart fromthe marked bay at the side of the Charles Wilson Building.Please see the daily schedules for more information.

Both bus stops are marked on the University map on page 14.

Cycling: You can also cycle in Leicester. We have arrangedspecial cycling tours with local organisation ‘Cyclemagic’ so thatyou can practise safe cycling in Leicester during the ISWP. Placesare limited to 12 people per tour so you will need to sign up fora time at the Information Desk in advance. Cycling tours areavailable every afternoon during the ISWP – you can check thedaily schedules for more information.

The Safety Bus will be available for safe travel home at night ifyou need to leave outside of the advertised bus times. You willfind the Safety Bus parked on the marked bay at the side of theCharles Wilson Building and the bus will leave when full and thenreturn back to campus.

You may wish to buy a minibus card in the Students' Union asthe Safety Bus service also operates during term time. Prices are£40 for a term and £99 for a year.

Taxis: Local taxi firms include ABC Taxis: 0116 2555 111 andQueens Cabs: 0116 2701 300. Don’t forget to use a taxi or theStudents’ Union run Safety Bus during the evenings if you needto get home by yourself.

How can I find out more about the city ofLeicester?

For more information about the city and the surrounding area,come to the ‘Find out more about Leicestershire’ talk onWednesday, go on a ‘Discover Leicester Tour’, sign up for awalking tour or visit the Tourist Information Office located atTown Hall Square in the city centre.

City and campus maps are available online –www.le.ac.uk/maps

Walking Tours: Leicester Civic Society will running interestingwalking tours, throughout the week, showing you some ofLeicester’s best known and interesting historical sights. Placesare limited to 30 per tour so please make sure you book at theInformation Desk. The themes of each walk are listed in thedaily schedules and you should take note of the time allowedfor each walk.

Please note that you can only book for one walking tourduring the ISWP.

Treasure hunt: This will be an ongoing challenge throughout theISWP! Come and sign up at The Point (Students’ Union Percy GeeBuilding) at either 12:00 or 13:00 each day. Here you will receivea list of clues and challenges to complete, to help you get yourbearings and meet important people around campus. There willbe prizes for the winning team! These include gig tickets, 50%off your bill at 1923 Restaurant, and merchandise vouchers forWillingales and the Union shop. Make sure you hand in yourcompleted forms to ‘The Point’ by 4pm each day.

RELIGIOUS PROVISION

Can I attend a worship service during the ISWP?

The Chaplaincy will be open daily from 10am - 4pm, for tea,coffee, and the chance to meet the University’s Chaplains andhave a chat. There will be two mass services for Catholic studentsat 12:30pm on Wednesday 29th September and Friday 1stOctober. Also on Thursday 30th September there will be aWelcome Communion Service at 1pm.

For more information about practising your faith in Leicester forall religions, please visit the Services Fair on Wednesday whererepresentatives from Leicester Council of Faiths will be present.

IMMIGRATION

My visa sticker says that I need to register withthe Police – what do I do?

The University have organised police registration on campus forthose who need to do this for the first time. You will need to signup at the ISWP Information Desk where you will be given a timeand place to attend – you must be punctual. You can find outmore about police registration and the documents you will needat the Student’s Guide to Immigration session on Wednesday.

Discover Leicester Tour

Venue: Meet at University Bus Stop (side of Charles Wilson Building). You will need your ticketto get on the bus. Repeated on Friday

Take a tour of Leicester on a red open-topped bus. A guide onboard the bus will tell you about the city’shistory and places of interest, such as the Golden Mile, National Space Centre and Abbey Park. There areonly 70 places per tour so please ensure that you board the correct bus at the time stated on your ticket.Tickets are available at the ISWP Information Desk in the Queen’s Hall Building Entrance Hall.

Fee-paying International students must complete their registration at the University. You will have received anappointment time when you registered for the ISWP at the ISWP Information Desk. You must already havesuccessfully completed online registration. You must attend your appointment – it is compulsory. If youare unable to attend, you must attend Monday to Wednesday of the first week of term.

Please bring your passport, photocopies of your passport (visa and photo page) and biometric card with acopy (if applicable). Study Abroad/Exchange and Erasmus students have their own arrangements to completetheir student registration. Discover Leicester Tour

Venue: Meet at University Bus Stop (side of Charles Wilson Building)

You will need your ticket to get on the bus

Take a tour of Leicester on a red open-topped bus. A guide onboard the bus will tell you about the city’shistory and places of interest, such as the Golden Mile, National Space Centre and Abbey Park. There areonly 70 places per tour so please ensure that you board the correct bus at the time stated on your ticket.Tickets are available at the ISWP Information Point in the Queen’s Hall Building Entrance Hall.

English Tea Party

Trip to Warwick Castle

Tickets will be sold from Wednesday – Friday, 9am - 4pm at The Point (Students’Union box office). Numbers are limited to 300 places. www.warwick-castle.co.uk

Cost £20 per person

Transport and Castle Admission included in cost – there are places to eat at the Castle, oryou could take a picnic lunch.

Warwick Castle is less than a one hour drive from the University. Built by William theConqueror in 1068, the castle sits on a cliff overlooking the River Avon. The castle wasused as a fortification until the early 17th century when it was converted into a countryhouse. It is now owned by the Tussard’s waxworks group who have introduced excellentinteractive exhibitions including Kingmaker, Royal Weekend Party, Haunted Towers,Dungeons, Maiden’s Tower and many other attractions. The grounds are extensive andthere is lots to see and do.

Coaches will leave:

Beaumont Hall at 09:45 (for students staying at Oadby Student Village)

Mayor’s Walk, Main Campus at 10:00 (for students staying at City Living sites)

We will leave Warwick Castle at 16:00, arriving back at approximately 17:00.
