Introducing the Assistant Deans (Internaonal) The University of Limerick’s commitment to internaonalizaon led to the appointment of 4 Assistant Deans, Internaonal, in each faculty. ADsI provide academic leadership and overall management direcon for internaonal acvies at UL. The University of Limerick’s commitment to internationalization led to the appointment of 4 Assistant Deans, International, in each faculty. They take lead responsibility for the development and successful delivery of programs and initiatives that enhance UL’s capacity to engage in international research and educational activities. Learning—Internationalisation Module

INTERCULTURAL TRAINING

Intercultural training for academic staff will take place on the morning of 24th November. Intercultural training for support staff will take place in the afternoon of the same date. For further information, please see www.ul.ie/hr/courses.

WORK AUTHORISATION FOR NEW STAFF

The HR Division provides support for international staff to facilitate timely receipt of work authorisation. Work Authorisation covers work permits, hosting agreements and GNIB stamps that entitle individuals to work. The University will liaise with potential employees to acquire the relevant per-mission to commence their contract of employment and furnish both con-tract and work authorisation to the individual. Receipt of the work authori-sation will enable new staff to apply for an entry visa to Ireland (if the per-son is coming from a visa required country). This process must be carried out separately by the individual themselves.

Research Support Services

Research Support Services (RSS)

(www.ul.ie/research) provides assistance

and intelligence to researchers on a

range of funded research programmes

supported by national and international

agencies. A core role of RSS is to support

researchers to identify and apply for

research funding. These funding oppor-

tunities include research visits (both

incoming and outgoing), short and long

stay fellowships and access to large scale

infrastructure for example.

To this end, RSS is responsible for dis-

seminating information on funding op-

portunities to researchers and providing

advice and support relating to funding

applications. The unit is responsible for

the institutional approval of research

funding applications. As the process of

applying for grants, receiving funding

and delivering projects can span a num-

ber of support departments across the

university, RSS has collated much of the

required information into a web-based

guide to aid the researcher through the

steps of the process. The Research Pro-

cess Guide covers the services provided

by Accounts, Procurement, Research

Support Services, the Technology Trans-

fer Office, the Graduate School, Human

Resources & the Library through the

Funding Application process.

HR Supports for Internationalisation

It is important that our teaching and learning activities are supportive of the increasingly multi-cultural classroom. The new Specialist Diploma from the Centre for Teaching and Learning includes a module on Internationali-sation. This module will help participants to recognise, respect and re-spond appropriately to the variety of cultural backgrounds in their class-room. Furthermore, through an internationalised curriculum, this module will help to ensure that all students are prepared to live and work in a global society. Processing of academic tran-script of results and oversight of entering of results onto UL profile, in order to ensure that graduation takes place, the Erasmus placement having been taken into account

Staff Mobility is available to all full-time administrative or technical staff. It allows for a visit of a few days to two weeks to any EU institution which holds an Erasmus Charter. The member of staff may attend a formal international week de-

signed by the host institution to familiarise partner universities with the host University or may shadow a member of staff working in the same area and experience how the host University functions within this given area. Notices of one-week structured programmes are cir-culated to Faculty Managers regularly by the Erasmus Coordinator.

A work programme and grant agreement is submitted to IED before the visit and a certificate of attendance after the visit.

Travel and subsistence grants are paid directly to the bank account of the member of staff. The maximum and minimum amounts are the same as those specified for Teacher Mobility.

The Programme encourages comparative teaching practices, en-hances opportunities for collaborative teaching and research, allows laboratory practices to be compared and discussed by practitioners, enables good practice to be disseminated throughout EU institutions and supports the internationalisation of campuses by strengthening relations between institutions through the creation of partnerships at the individual and team level.

At present UL sends approximately 35 teachers per year and 5 mem-bers of academic and technical staff.

Teacher Mobility is available to all members of UL academic staff. It allows for a visit of one to twelve weeks to any EU institution which holds an Erasmus Charter. The member of staff makes the arrangements for the visit through

his/her contact at the host University and through the International Education Division at UL (Erasmus Coordinator). Lists of partner universities can be obtained by request or from the IED, Erasmus website.

Teaching hours, including lectures, seminars, student consultation, are for a minimum of 8 hours per week. A teaching programme and grant agreement is submitted to the Erasmus Coordinator before the visit and a certificate of attendance after the visit.

Grants are paid directly to the bank account of the member of staff. The rates for travel and subsistence are available on request or on the UL website.

International Student Support—Information for UL Staff

Pre-departure Information

Student receive extensive pre- arrival information on UL, academic programmes, accommodation, travel and airport collection and immigration. A Bud-dy Programme is set up in advance of the students arrival. Orientation Support

7 day Orientation Programme introduces students to all facilitates and services available and non-EEA students receive an appointment with local immigration. A series of cultural and integration events are organized to ease the transition from home to UL, these include coffee mornings, movie nights, traditional Irish music night, shopping trip etc. Cultural Support

Cultural events such as Thanksgiv ing, Diwali, Chinese New Year and Eid are celebrated as well as a field trips to areas of cultural interest each semester. Each October an International Festival is organised. Academic Support: Academic Literacies Module – AW6001 & AW6012 Two three-credit modules are avail able for international students for whom English is a second language.

The classes are designed to provide the necessary support an Interna tional student will need to improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. The classes will also help with guidance on the sis writing and exam skills. Integration Support: Cross-cultural Competence and Communication Training pro-gramme for students and staff in-volved in postgraduate pro-grammes at UL.

Launched 2016/17 this programme aims to increase intercultural awareness and knowledge of post graduate student groups while facilitating participants to apply cross-cultural communication skills to build better intercultural relation ships and engage and communicate more effectively in the classroom environment, while also facilitating students to recognise the value of diversity.

Internationalisation for Support Staff

International Research Funding

All new members of staff are automatically subscribed to the weekly research Research Funding Newsletter which details funding opportunities for international research programmes. All major and national current open funding opportunities are listed on the RSS webpage Funding Opportunities. In addition, UL subscribes to Research Professional a searchable database of global funding opportunities across all disciplines. Funding Opportunities can be searched by a number of criteria including Discipline, Award Type, Funder, Date or a full text search. You can find more information on Re-search Professional here, along with links to training materials and videos. You can access Research Professional directly when logged on to the UL network or you can set up an account for off campus access. Please con-tact Richard Cotterell if you wish to set up an account.

With a view to fostering innovation and facilitating improvements in specific sectors, administrative and technical staff may travel to a UL partner university to attend training programmes, to shadow staff members working in the same area, to experience working practices and facilities or to attend a formal Erasmus Staff Training week. These are hosted throughout the year by partner Universities. Travel and subsistence grants are paid. For further information please visit www.ul.ie/international.

Erasmus+

International Credit

Mobility

Erasmus+ International Credit Mo-bility is not included. It was intro-duced in 2015. This new strand of the Erasmus+ Programme under Key Action 1 provides staff with the opportunity to train, teach or con-duct research in countries outside Europe or host international col-leagues at the University of Limer-ick. It supports students in their studies going outside Europe or coming from outside Europe. A call is sent to all staff prior to IED com-pleting the application. The mini-mum duration for staff is 5 days ex-cluding travel to a maximum of 60 days. The travel rates are per web-site and the daily individual support is €160 for staff up to 15 days, infor-mation is available
