Issue 06 March 11 2011 Dear Parents, Students and Friends of John XXIII College International Women’s Day On Tuesday the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day was celebrated around the world. In our Christian tradition we have celebrated women for much longer than 100 years, with Jesus calling many women to ministry and discipleship. Mary Ward and many other women have since formed religious communities that have provided strong leadership in education, health and the protection of the most vulnerable in our society. On this centenary, it is a good opportunity to commend the work of the Loreto Sisters around the world who work to free women from the burden of poor health, systemic violence and poor educational opportunities. On International Women’s Day this prayer was circulated to all Loreto Communities. Women are a reflection of the glory of God. Today we honour the women of all times and all places: Women of courage. Women of hope. Women suffering. Women mourning. Women living fully. Women experiencing joy. Women delighting in life. Women knowing the interconnectedness of the human family. Women honouring the sacredness of the relational, the affective. Women quietly tending the garden of human flourishing. Women boldly leading the transformation of unjust global structures. Women seeking Wisdom. Women sharing Wisdom. Women receiving Love. Women giving Love. Women: life-giving. Women: the image of God. Loving God, we celebrate your faithfulness and love. On this day we commit ourselves to the promotion of the full humanity of all women everywhere. We know that whatever denies, diminishes, or distorts the full humanity of women is not of God. Help us to be faithful to your call to love. Amen. Source: The Centre of Concern Lent On Wednesday the 40 day period of preparation for the Easter Tridium commenced with Ash Wednesday. International Women’s Day

In our Christian tradition we have celebrated women for much longer than 100 years, with Jesus calling many women to ministry and discipleship. Mary Ward and many other women have since formed religious communities that have provided strong leadership in education, health and the protection of the most vulnerable in our society. Around the Primary Dear Parents, We are now in the first week of Lent. On Wednesday we gathered together to celebrate Mass for Ash Wednesday. A big thank you to Miss Coniglio, Mrs Vicoli and Year 6G for preparing this lovely Mass. At Mass Father Gaetan reminded us that Lent is a time of getting ready for the feast of Easter by trying to live the way Jesus showed us to live. During Lent let us help our children to reflect on compassion and justice in our world by giving what we can to Project Compassion. Please encourage your children to ‘give up’ some of their money to others in need by filling the Project Compassion boxes in their classrooms. The children from Years 3-6 enjoyed participating in the Swimming Carnival yesterday and it was so wonderful to see so many parents and friends supporting this event. Congratulations to St Louis and Loyola, our Champion Houses for 2011. Well done to all the competitors – you certainly made us proud! Our appreciation is extended to Mr Alderman for organizing this sensational swimming carnival and to all the hard working helpers. Congratulations to all the Houses: Equal First: St Louis with 290 points and Loyola with 290 Points. Koolyangarra with 258 Points: Loreto with 223 points: Campion with 196 Points and Ward with 155 Points. Next Thursday 17th March we will be celebrating Primary House Day at John XXIII. This involves the children participating in a range of activities that commemorate the House to which they belong and to also remember the Founders of our College. Just a reminder, on this special day the children are required to wear their House shirt and sports shorts. They will need to bring morning tea, however, lunch (a sausage sizzle and drink) will be provided by the College. Parents are very welcome to join us as at 11am for a prayer celebration in the chapel. Finally, special thanks to all those who have put so much time and effort into organising the Family Picnic. It is wonderful that so many families are supporting this social event tomorrow (Saturday 12th March). I’m sure a good time is going to be had by one and all at the picnic. Kind regards, Ms Antoinette De Pinto - Head of Primary

Chaplain’s Column

It seems to be a standard biblical pattern that when people are called by God for some purpose, they soon undergo a period of test. In hearing and following that divine call they may have experienced a sense of personal affirmation and a freedom to serve. Jesus comes into a desert experience, within the context of God’s love and acceptance., to learn far more deeply what it is to be human being, stripped of the usual props and comforts, alone simply with that God relationship, he had to feel his own powerlessness, sinfulness and utter dependence upon the grace of God. Only with this knowledge can anyone become God’s instrument for life and for good in the world. There is a classic instance of Israel’s forty year wandering in the Sinai desert a period of testing, where Israel often failed. Jesus, the New Adam, spent a long Lent of forty days fasting in desert during which time his body and soul gained in freedom and his awareness became more acute. In solidarity with all who suffer hunger and oppression, Jesus, the New Moses, experiences his Exodus. ‘In the desert, I am worth only the value of my ideals ‘says A. de Saint Exupery. The vivid account of the Jesus’ temptation is a suggestion by Matthew the evangelist, that the true God and true man, was tempted by Satan during all his earthly life. Jesus was tempted in subtle ways. After he had been in the wilderness for forty days, the tempter appeared to him and urged him to turn stones into bread. Jesus must have been hungry after his long fast. Often a temptation can appear like a reasonable idea, at least superficially. But Jesus realises he is being tempted to become somebody other than who he really is. Temptation is often like that. It invites us to enter into a fantasy world and to lose our grip on reality. We can start to live in dream world. The tempter faced Jesus with three familiar temptations: to use his power to be materially secure (never hungry), physically safe (comfortable) and politically successful (in control). The desire for wealth, comfort or political power is normal human impulses, and Jesus rejects them all. Jesus rejects this ultimate temptation which is to want to take control. Jesus lets God be in control of his life. It wasn’t easy for Jesus and it isn’t easy for us today. May this Lent, help us to give up acquiring more stuff, and give up seeking comfort and control so that we may have courage to meet our own challenges in our own wilderness experience. “It is the heart which experiences God and not the reason. This then, is faith: God felt by the heart not by the reason”. Blasé Pascal.

Health Information HEAD LICE INFORMATION AS A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE COULD PARENTS/GUARDIANS PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD/REN REGULARLY FOR HEAD LICE. What are Head Lice? Head lice are tiny insect parasites that live on the human head, feeding on the scalp several times a day. Head lice reproduce by laying their eggs (nits) on the hair shaft close to the scalp. They are not dangerous, don’t carry diseases and are not a sign of poor hygiene. How are head lice spread? Head lice are spread by head-to-head contact with another person who has head lice, e.g. when doing group work at school, playing, or hugging. Head lice can run from one head to another in seconds. Head lice cannot fly, jump or swim, but they can sometimes ‘trapeze’ from one hair to another. Brushes and combs are unlikely to transfer head lice and do not transfer viable eggs, as these are very hard to detach from the hair shaft. Head lice are not spread through bed linen, clothing or head gear, as they do not leave the scalp unless they are dead or dying. Eggs (nits) do not fall off until weeks after they have hatched as the egg shells are glued tightly to the hair shaft. How do I look for head lice?

Dry head checks are unreliable, due to the speed at which head lice move. Saturate dry hair with hair conditioner, then comb in sections with a metal fine-tooth ‘nit’ comb.

Wipe the comb on a white paper towel and examine them with a strong light or magnifying glass to look for head lice and eggs.

What do I do if I find head lice? Check all household members (use hair conditioner). Choose one of the treatments from the Department of Health’s Fact Sheet (10 day hair conditioner

treatment or insecticide treatment) Inform the class teacher or nurse and inform any other contacts. Parent/guardian of child with head lice will be given confirmation of treatment form to complete and

return Parents/Guardians will be emailed when head lice is reported from a class. When treatment is completed, check the hair regularly, e.g. weekly, for any further head lice

infestation. Early treatment can prevent spread to further close contacts. For further information go to www.health.wa.gov.au/headlice.

Children's Liturgy at Holy Rosary Parish Children's Liturgy will commence again this Sunday 27th Feb @ 9.30am Mass Children’s Liturgy is a great avenue for children to understand the meaning of the Gospel as it is unfolded in an activity, and through discussion with each other on how to apply it to their daily lives. It is also a great means of children obtaining a better understanding of the Mass and their Catholic faith as they prepare for their Sacraments. NB Morning tea always follows after the 9.30am Mass each Sunday in the Parish Hall throughout the school terms. Trudy McKenna - Children's Liturgy Co-ordinator

The ‘Rock and Water’ Program Facilitated by Craig Van Waardenburg (accredited Rock and Water trainer) this father/son activity-based program builds on the complementary strengths of ‘the rock’ and ‘the water’. One is firm and assertive, while the other is flexible and willing to cooperate. Many boys are inclined to be primarily physical, and when faced with conflict or a problem often express them-selves physically. Through gaining body awareness, self-awareness and emotional awareness they can better recognise the patterns of their own reactions and the reactions of others. There are two courses running, each focussing on a different age group. The February and May courses are targeting 8-12 year olds and the June course is targeting 13-16 year olds. Though primarily for fathers and sons, a male mentor or other role model is welcome to participate with the boy.
