International Society of Hematology

Sixth Congress

(1) The time and location of the Congress will be different from the original announce- ment. The date has been moved forward one week t o August 26-September 1, inclusive. The convention site has been shifted to the Hotel Somerset, Boston, Massachusetts. Both of these changes should improve the scope of the Congress and convenience to the .individual delegates.

(2) The Officers of the Congress are as follows:

Dr. William Dameshek, President Dr. James L. Tullis, Vice-president and Treasurer Dr. Wlliarn C. Moloney, Secretary Dr. A. Richardson Jones, Assistant Secretary Rr. Frank Gardner, Assistant Treasurer

Announcements 57

(3) The Sixth Congress of the International Transfusion Society, under the Presidency of Dr. I. S. Ravdin, will be held on September 3-5, inclusive, also at the Hotel Somerset. Combined sessions of the two Congresses are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 1, and Monday, September 3. This will permit integration of the irnmuno-hematology part of both programs in joint sessions.

(4) The official Travel Agency for the Congress is the World Travel Plan Corp., affiliate of the Hotel Plan of Switzerland. Arrangements for travel may be made directly with World Travel Plan Corp., 125 East 50th Street, New York 22, New York. Chartered plane travel on regularly scheduled airlines (tourist fights) will be arranged from Paris and other selected capitals of Europe. Approximate fee for round-trip flights from Paris-Boston-Paris will be considerably below regular tourist class fare, and will approximate $ 325. Post-Congress travel can also be arranged by World Travel Plan Corp. Application for travel reservations should be made at the earliest possible moment. AU Congressists must complete the enclosed registra- tion form.

(5) It ia hoped that through various scientific foundations, governmental agencies, and industrial &ms, a certain amount of money will be available for travel assist- ance to qualified individuals. Preference will be given to full-time university workers, invited speakers in the plenary sessions, persons presenting papers and exhibits, and other active participants. Application forms will be sent on request. Due t o the large number of travel grant applications and the relatively small amount of money available for this purpose, it is anticipated that travel grant allowance will in most cases cover only a part of the round-trip, reduced-rate plane fare.

(6) The official languages will be English, French, Spanish, and Interlingua; the latter will be used only for documents, including programs and abstracts. The International Business Machines Corporation has donated to the Society for use during the Congress simultaneous translation equipment. A corps of 12-14 expert translators, under the charge o f Dr. Eduardo Orbe, will be in constant attendance a t the three meeting rooms of the Congress.

(7) Plenary sessions of the Congress will be held each morning. For the most part, the speakers for the plenary sessions will be invited and will be expected to present basic, comprehensive, and recent data on their special topics.

(8 ) Three simultaneous multiple sessions and panel (group) discussions will be held each afternoon (except Wednesday). Ten-minute papers will be followed by dis- cussion. Those desiring t o submit papers will please send abstracts (up t o 300 words) by March 1, 1956. The Program Committee reserves the right to accept or reject papers presented for presentation. Preference will be given to originality and aptness of work, relationship of paper to themes of the Congress, etc. Due t o inadequacy of time, some of the papers will be read by title but will nevertheless become part of the official proceedings of the Society and will be published in abstract form in the final program, According to the by-laws of our Society, only one paper may be presented by a given individual; abstracts of two or more papers may, however, be sent for review. Panel discussions composed of individuals to be seIected by the Program Committee will take place after the multiple sessions and should give opportunity for “give and take” discussion.

58 Announcements

(9) The principal themes of the Congress will be as follows: (1) Leukemia (2) Nucleonics (3) Spleen and Reticulo-Endothelial System (4) Hemorrhagic Disorders (5) Anemia (6) Immunohematology ((‘Auto” Type)

The session on Spleen and Reticulo-Endothelial System will be held in conjunction with the newly organized Reticulo-Endothelial Society, Dr. Charles A. Doan, Pre- sident.

(10) There will be adequate space for the presentation of Scientific and Technical Exhibits. Those desirous of presenting an Exhibit or Demonstration will please notify us immediately. Exhibitors should note that the electrical current in the United States is of the 110-volt, 60-cycle type. Provisions have been made for Motion Pictures (8 mm., 16 mm., 35 mm.) with or without sound.

(11) The State Department, through its Exchange of Persons Program, will facilitate the entrance of Congressists to the United States. The exchange program for the Congress has been assigned the number P-2106, and the various American Embassies and Consulates throughout the world have been notified of this program. If you have not already written us of your decision to come to the Congress, please do so even if this is doubtful, and you will be sent an official invitation t o attend. This will be helpful to you in expediting the receipt of a visa.

(12) The Hotel Somerset is the official hotel headquarters of the Sixth Congress and will be the site of all the sessions, plenary and otherwise. Three hundred bedrooms have been allotted at the Hotel Somerset. Three hundred other rooms have been allocated a t nearby hotels: Hotels Kenmore, Braemore, Fensgate, and Sherry- Biltmore. “Tourist” hotel accommodations will also be available a t other nearby hotels, and a number of dormitory rooms will be reserved at Vanderbilt Hall (Harvard) and Posner Hall (Tufts). The Hotel Somerset is in the Fenway District of Boston, close to the educational center of Boston, the various museums, and the Harvard Medical Center, with its various affiliate hospitals.

(13) The following Special Events have been arranged: (1) Monday evening, August 27: Official Congress Reception. (2) Wednesday afternoon and evening, August 29 : Excursions. (3) Friday evening, August 31: Gala Banquet a t the Hotel

Somerset. Since the main banquet hall holds only about 1000 diners, it is essential to make reservations now.

(14) Congress Fees: The fee for Registration at the Congress will be $ 30.00 for members of the Society, and $40.00 for non-members. (Bonn fide medical students, internes, residents, Fellows, et al., can attend scientific sessions for a special fee of $ 3.00). The Congress fee will include registration, program, admission to all scientific sessions and exhibits, official reception and cocktail party a t the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Wednesday evening outing and clambake at Castle Hill. The registration fee does not include the Banquet. Registration fee for associates (wives) will be $10. This will include the Monday and Wednesday special events.
