“I feel sad for someone who has sight but no vision.”

― Helen Keller

OUR new International President Chancellor Bob Curlew hails from the State of Tennessee in the United States and is our 100th International president. The ‘Chancellor’ title refers to a fairly unique position within the American judicial system. IP Bob has some strong messages that centre around Lions getting ready for the next 100 years by following the pathways up the same mountains that Lions have climbed for the last 100 years, and then to start climbing some more, as there are new community challenges, not just in our local environment but across the World.IP Bob is keen for Lions to promote activities and service projects that focus on the following- Bringing our communities closer

together in harmony and peace- Continuing our 90 year focus on sight/

vision- Alleviating hunger from our

communities

- Supporting and nurturing our youth who are the future of Lions and our future in this World

- Caring for our local environment- Preparing for, and being active in our

100 years celebrations as the Worlds leading voluntary service organisation.

As Bob told us in Fukuoka, Japan, at the International Convention - “As we commence a year of celebrating 100 years of community service – honouring our past and embracing our present – it is our future that we must plan and begin to forge. Our future is bright.”These themes are being championed in many of our Clubs within the District and I thank you for your combined energy and contributions.

Start Your Engines!WE ARE full steam ahead for this new Lions’ year, with reports of new member inductions, motivating club changeover events, and service projects progressing across the District. Our District aim for this year is to include a determination to support the Clubs as you build your membership and encourage

We do both of these activities best by making our Clubs attractive to belong to and leaving people with a sense of doing something that is fun and worthwhile. The District Membership Team is ready to join in to provide people power, expertise, and encouragement as Clubs work through these critical activities around Membership and transitioning our clubs from the ‘now’ to the future. Please contact myself, or any member of the District Cabinet Executive, or any member of the wider Cabinet team. THE YEAR has commenced in earnest with the district and club changeover behind us. I am turning my attention to the governor visits again, so I will be following up clubs who have not agreed to a date for the visit. I will also be

strident in attending to activity reporting as we commence the centennial year of Lions. We are being asked via our Activity Reporting to record our efforts against the Centennial Service Campaigns, and to

document how many people our activities are reaching. For this I am calling on Club Secretaries to meet their reporting obligations by the 25th of each month. Elected Officer Nominations / Notices of Motion DUE to an early date for this year’s District AGM and Convention (28-30th October), for Project Notices of Motion will close on Monday 1st August 2016; for Nominations of Elected Positions and all other Notices of Motion (except Late) they will close on Wednesday 31st AUGUST, 2016.

“Why Membership?”WELCOME to the new Lions Year 2016/2017 with our new District Governor Brian Buchanan. “Why Membership?” will be my theme for this year, and I would like everyone that is reading this section of our newsletter to ask themselves: Why Membership?

Also – could you think about what order you would put the following in:• Retention• Membership• Public RelationsPerhaps you could write to the editor of our newsletter, Kirsty Wilkinson, with the order you would put them in and why.The Club of Year for Membership growth was the Lions Club of Wandong-Wallan, with a net increase of 11 new members. Congratulations to Ron Howell and his membership team! The District will be running 2 Membership Forums on 10th August at the Box Hill Hall and 4th September at Nagambie – venue to be advised. This is an opportunity for every club to be involved and have a representative at either one of the above dates. It is very important that clubs have a plan and target at the beginning of the Lions’ year, for membership growth. The figures for the 2015/2016 Lions year were a 168 new members gain with 193 members leaving our organisation (net loss of 25). This year we start with 1,327 members, so lets make sure that we induct more new members than we lose.

He also showed a great capacity to engage with and relate to people across a broad and diverse spectrum. Joe has a light-hearted good sense of humour, which served to stimulate and motivate people as well as allay participant’s fears whilst engendering a trust and confidence that they were ‘safe’ in his care. Most impressively, Joe was

ANOTHER Lions’ year has just begun. All the things you may have left behind will still be waiting for your return. Now is the time to start a tidy up of the things you left behind and add them to the list of the things you planned to do this year. Top of the list is that old hardy annual MEMBERSHIP and this is something we are all going to think about in the near future. Is thinking about it enough? Talking about new members is not enough! Some definite ACTION is REQUIRED! The first step would be our suggested approach. Telling the story of past glory to prospective new members is not enough! It is all very good to tell of what we may have done all over the world as Lions International. We should be just proud of our efforts to our fellow man, but our best efforts should be directed at the area which is closest to us as a Club. There is plenty to do locally! When inviting someone to join our Club it might pay to stress local needs and even invite them to tell of their own experiences of what things are needing attention locally. This would lead to asking if they were interested in helping the Lions Club to look into the matter, and so we have the possibility of a new member. You could mention some of the things we have played a part locally and please do not forget to mention that we have FUN doing it. Eye and hearing tests with the local school children are a great way of meeting parents at a time when you have a chance to talk them. I am sure you can think of other examples. As we start another year, try to be alert to local situations where we can make a contribution. Best of luck in your efforts!

viewed as an effective problem solver, which was demonstrated on countless occasions where his quick interventions served to ensure that potentially difficult situations did not escalate. For example, one man with profound autism reacted fearfully after trying the Flying Fox, screaming uncontrollably and refusing to come down from the safety ladder or to have his harness removed. Where other more mature adults, including the young man’s mother, tried unsuccessfully to extricate the young man, Joe jumped up beside him, respectfully entering into his space, talking to him firmly but gently and managing to get his harness off, which resulted in him safely getting down from the ladder.’Joe’s name has been changed for privacy reasons. Our Leos in 201 V5 contribute in many ways and this is a recent example. Please contact me should you be interested in further i n f o r m a t i o n about Leos.– Chester Allan

WANDONG-WALLAN Lions Club had a lot to celebrate at their recent Changeover Dinner. It was a great evening with Past District Governor Chandra Mangalore presiding over the installation of Office Bearers for 2016. Many special guests and friends old and new from other Clubs came along to help us celebrate. It has been a fantastic year for the Club, welcoming 11 new members and celebrating a very successful year. Over $22,000 has been given out in disbursements and we were very proud

WANDONG WALLAN LIONS CLUBto donate over $11,000 to The Lions Cord Blood Foundation. We held a Safety Number Plate Day in conjunction with Seymour Police which was not only extremely successful but a lot of fun too and a great opportunity for many of our new members to get well and truly involved. We also continue to support the local secondary college at Wallan, with a donation to the Bell Shakespeare Project, and speakers from the College coming along to our Dinner Meetings on a couple of occasions.

WHEN I was young I wanted to be a doctor, builder, a chip shop man, or the man on the steam roller who got to smell hot tar all day and didn't have to put up with going to school and learning about the silent “b” in thumb. I mean really why put it there in the first place? I guess despite never fulfilling any of those ambitions my life is a procession of opportunity and variety.Something I never expected was a chair position for the environment. I was not sure where to start but after ten months things were coming into some semblance of order.Well I thought so until the lovely Lions Club of Blackburn North invited me to be a guest speaker. My first invite to talk about the environment, such a broad topic. I had to narrow the subject to a meaningful train of thought. As is my style I decided to tell a story, with witty and informative points along the way. I even had a range of props which would be poignant highlights to give my talk substance. It was to be a show stopper I would even record for posterity. The night started most amicably, even at another Club, Lions meetings are as

familiar and comforting as putting on an old pair of slippers, albeit someone else's slippers. I enjoyed the company of Lions, partners and two prospective Lions. A glass of chardonnay and a tender chicken parmigiana with enough chips to spare or at least that's what the cheeky buggar next to me thought. His nickname was Hoppy but he will always be "The Seagull" to me.After some Club business I was called to take the podium. I was cordially introduced to all and handed a microphone, a hand held one. Not too tricky talking into a mike. I know the drill, not to get too close and not pointed away from your mouth but my talk was more of a burlesque act with waving arms and object of interest appearing in context with my informative narrative!Needless to say it was not a show stopper, trying to follow my talk would have been hard with a pack of blood hounds and a SES squad. I eventually got to the end without blood loss or parking infringements and was eager to resume my seat. But no. Before I could beat a retreat President Richard Allanson presented me with a Club bannerette, called for appreciative applause and congratulated me on an interesting speech. At first I thought he

The Maiden Speech must have nipped out to the gents and missed my talk. As I looked around the room full of smiles I realised how lucky I was to be doing my maiden speech in a Lions Club. A place to have a crack at something new supported by folk who are happy to encourage you and appreciate your effort.I certainly don't have all the answers to the problems with the world environment, though I am sure I'm not alone in that. That night I was made aware of a most important environment, the one found within our Clubs. It is the one environment where we can make the most impact. Blackburn North seemed to me to be on healthy ground and the two new prospects I met should flourish there. So, I paused to consider if my Club had created similar conditions to allow members to grow. I do hope so.I learned much about myself and Lions that night, with luck I may get to give my talk again and improve my presentation. Hopefully another Club will get to learn something, even if it's just the fact that you can never be sure of what you get in exchange for a chicken parmigiana and a glass of chardonnay.

I RECENTLY returned home from the 2016 International Convention in Fukuoka, Japan where I attended with 30,000 Lions from around the world. There was much fun and laughter as well as many sessions to learn more about our wonderful service organisation.I would like to share a quote from International President Chancellor Bob

Fukuoka International ConventionCorlew, whose theme is “New Mountains to Climb”.“As we commence a year of celebrating 100 years of service - honouring our past and embracing our present - it is our future that we must plan and begin to forge. Our future is bright. But speaking metaphorically, if we are to ascend the next mountain, we must lay out a trail in front of us; we must mark our trail for future generations of Lions who follow and preserve our tradition of service”.In our district this year we will be setting out to embark on our trail by assisting Clubs to rebuild where necessary and endeavouring to increase membership in other Clubs to assist in the wonderful service projects all Clubs undertake to lighten the workload for all members.I encourage Clubs to c o n t a c t the Global Membership Team if you require ANY a s s i s t a n c e throughout the year; we are here to help you.1st Vice International President Naresh

The District Changeover Luncheon was held recently at the Mernda Hotel, Mernda. A good time was had by all, with great food, great company and a wonderful venueOnce again this year the District Governor Team will be sharing visits to Clubs.I look forward to meeting with familiar faces and meeting new Lions as I travel around the district with DG Brian’s message of “Building for the Future”.The measure of our success is in the ability to move on positively and with dignity. We should consider it the right of every Lion to enjoy their Club’s fellowship and activities to the fullest. When we ask the question, “are you having fun yet?” we should expect a hearty and resounding – “We are Lions and YES WE ARE!”

Licola Corner July 2016

“The highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it.” John Buskin

The New Licola Corner Hello and welcome to the new

look Licola Corner. Please be

advised that this is a work in

progress and one that we will

fine tune over the coming

months. We welcome any

feedback now or in the future.

Mail all suggestions to

[email protected].

As Licola is one of the glowing

jewels in the crown of all Lions

and Lioness Clubs please be

sure to distribute this to the

four corners of your influence.

Be proud of your Licola. Thank

you in advance.

The Future Looks Bright The 2015 – 2016 annual statements (Financial and CEO) are now on the website under the Lions portal (www.licola.org.au). Please take a chance to read these as it is wonderful to report that we have achieved success in many different areas. More child numbers, more bums in beds, more people having benefited from the Licola Experience, more and varied programs (specifically the Wild4 Program), and finally the fourth successive year with a modest dollar surplus to assist us in taking the next steps… Onward… Further… Upward.

Always ImprovingIt has been many years since we’ve rejuvenated our website, however it is currently being worked on. Watch this space but expect soon to be directed to a new look, feel and responsive site. What this means is that no matter what device is being used the Licola page will adjust accordingly. With over 40% of all web activity now through mobile devices and over 50% of our business coming from our website we can all see the importance of developing this site accordingly.

Over 50s needs you!Hey Lions and Lioness – can anyone let us know why there has been such little interest thus far in the booking of our Over 50s camp set this year 7-11 November? This is truly one of the best weeks of the year – for staff and visitors alike. At $330 pp for the 5 days which includes all meals, some happy hour fun games and activities, and return bus from Melbourne we consider it to be excellently priced. It can be as serenely quiet or as full on and adventurous as you would choose. It is not open just for the general public but for Lions members and their families. Please come back to us today and help us understand why it might be that we have had little response so far. Alternatively, just call up and book yourself a spot on that coach! (03) 51488791.

Working Bee. Bzzzzz…The next W.B. is set before the conventions, 5th – 11th September, please advise your Clubs ASAP.

Letter from the Editor when I attended the Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI) in Sydney at the end of March one of the important topics discussed was Club motivation. Prior to attending the RLLI we were set a pre-assignment to be completed by Club members to fill in the Club Survey. As a fairly new Lion I found it very interesting reviewing the results. All members I surveyed enjoyed being a Lion and enjoyed Club meetings. However, there was a big variance in whether members felt they are challenged to try new things. We discussed the results of the Club Survey amongst one another. It was interesting to hear what others had experienced at their Clubs.I guess the question is if you're not feeling challenged to try new things do you just accept things the way they are or do you try to approach your Club about some more challenging tasks? If you're not feeling challenged enough at your Club I'd suggest approaching them from let them know how you're feeling and want some more challenging things to work on. Prior to attending the RLLI had lacked a lot of motivation, but that greatly changed after attending the RLLI. Upon returning from Sydney I sat down with my sponsor to talk about my experience at the RLLI and how I wanted to be involved in Lions. The next thing I knew my name had been put forward to be newsletter editor for 2016/17. HAVE THE COURAGE TO ASK YOUR CLUB FOR MORE CHALLENGING TASKS!

Australian Lions Foundation helping Lions, help their CommunityChanges to the structure of the Australian Lions Foundation –Memo All Members:THIS notice serves to advise all Clubs in MD201 of some proposed changes to the Australian Lions Foundation. These changes do not affect the operational processes of the Foundation but are being implemented to meet the changes in the Legislative requirements now in place for managing a Foundation like ours. Effectively, it is “housekeeping” to make the Foundation’s operations fully compliant with current laws. Over the past twelve months, the Foundation applied in all States and Territories to have approval to fundraise in the public area. It is now able to accept donations through the “Donate Link” portal on the Foundations Website to support our Disaster Appeals. While obtaining these approvals, a number of States requested some changes to the Foundations “Deed” under which we operate. With the assistance and advice of Legal Officer PCC David Skinner OAM and Moore’s Legal, (who have also been assisting the Foundation), we have been advised that to meet all new requirements, the Foundation must change from being managed by a “Trust” to become a “Company Limited by Guarantee” which falls under the requirements of ASIC and Companies Law. This will not change how the Foundation provides its Awards or manages the Grants program, but will change the internal administration structure to allow for Gift Deductibility for our Disaster Appeals and ensure that all Lions Clubs in the Multiple District will still be members of the Foundation.

As these changes are mandatory for us to comply, the Foundation has commenced through Moore’s Legal the transition and hopefully this will all be in place at the Multiple District Convention in May where we will present all this information at our Annual General Meeting, so that you are fully aware of what has been done. The only impact on Clubs to remain members of the Foundation will be the need for each Club to complete a form confirming their intention as Members. This form requires all Members (which are the Lions Clubs) to guarantee, that in the event of the Foundation being wound up, they would be limited in liability to an amount of up to $1.00 per Club. As the Foundation does not have any liabilities the likelihood would be rare. This meets the requirements of a “Company Limited by Guarantee”. Some of the changes that will be seen for our Administration is that the name of the Foundation will become the “The Australian Lions Foundation Ltd.”, “Trustees” will change to become “Directors” and the Disaster Appeal support will be managed as a separate entity (known as The Australian Lions Foundation) within the overall structure. Our financial reporting will now have two components which will roll-up into a consolidated financial report and Balance Sheet. Although this may seem a big change for the Foundation, it only impacts on our administration and legal requirements. The good thing is that it does not impact on how we operate with Clubs and will continue on the same basis to support all Clubs with their Awards and Grants. All of the proposed changes were reviewed and approved by the Trustees at the last Trustee meeting and a new Constitution was completed which included all the operational aspects of the previous “Deed” under which the Foundation has operated. Moore’s Legal have now been instructed to proceed and have all Legal matters completed by the MD Convention.
