Introduction Sub-Saharan Africa is a geographical term

used to describe the area of the African continent which lies south of the Sahara,

The Sub-Saharan region is also known as Black Africa, in reference to its many black populations

Sub-Saharan Africa is the poorest region in the world

The region contains most of the least developed countries in the world.

• Sub-Saharan Africa’s population growth in both rural and urban areas is the highest in the world.

• Malaria is a chronic impediment to economic development. The disease slows growth by about 1.3% per year

• According to the World Bank, the region's GDP would have been 32% higher in 2003 had the disease been eradicated in 1960

Languages and Ethnic group

• Sub-Saharan Africa displays more diversity than anywhere in the world. The region speaks 1000 languages, which is 1/6 of the world's total.

• The distribution of the Afro-Asiatic languages within Africa is principally concentrated in North Africa and Horn of Africa.

Facts and Figures CoEnergy and Power• 50% of Africa is rural. No access to electricity • Africa generates 47 MW of electricity, less than 0.6% of global market share. Many

countries are besieged by power shortages

Infrastructure• Less than 40 percent of rural Africans live within two kilometres of an all-season road• Spending on roads in Sub-Saharan Africa averages just below 2 percent of GDP with

varying degree among countries

Agriculture• Agriculture represents 20% to 30% of GDP in Sub-Saharan Africa• Agriculture represents 50% of exports. In some cases, 60% to 90% of the labour force are

employed in agriculture

Oil and minerals• The region is a major exporter to the world of gold, uranium, chrome, vanadium, antimony,

coltan, bauxite, iron ore, copper and manganese.• South Africa is a major exporter of manganese. South Africa is also a major supplier of chrome.

About 42% of world reserves and about 75% of the world reserve are located in South Africa.

• Sub Saharan Africa’s total external debt in 2007 increased to $195 billion increased from $172 billion in 2006.

• The external debt-to-GNI ratio is 41 percentage points lower than the level in 2000

• The debt service to exports ratio declined from 12 percent in 2000 to 5 percent in 2007
