42 Where We Work

Good Neighbors is an international humanitarian development NGO in General Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC). Since its founding in Korea in 1991, we have focused on providing child education, community development, health, water & sanitation, and disaster relief programs in 34 countries around the world. In 2007, we were awarded the 'Millennium Development Goals Award' for the advancement of primary education in the least developed countries.

Cover StoryGood Neighbors Nepal conducts advocacy activities to protect the rights of girls deprived of proper education due to the practice of early marriage. Access to education through schools are the foundation for change and for a bright future for the girls of Doti, Nepal, who are now empowered to reject early marriage and pursue their education alongside boys.

human rights of children based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by raising awareness in local commu-nities and transforming societies toward a more child-friendly environment. To celebrate the United Nation International Year of Water, Good Neighbors organized campaigns worldwide emphasiz-ing the importance of clean water for development, in parallel with the Good Water project providing access to safe drinking water to 394,000 people worldwide. We shared the success of Good Neighbors Korea’s ‘Global Citizenship Education’ pro-gram with Good Neighbors Japan and other field countries, providing to millions of children and their families the chance to apprehend the importance of global solidarity in eradicat-ing poverty and hunger, and helping them transform such learning into action through donation and volunteership. Even at this very moment, there are many neighbors out there suffering from poverty, conflict, disasters and hunger. Good Neighbors commits to do its best to reach those people to transform this world into a better neighborhood with their participation, and most of all with your participation.

Sincerely,

Ilha YiPresident Good Neighbors International

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to all the part-ners who are supporting and encouraging Good Neighbors from around the world. Despite the challenging global eco-nomic conditions of 2013, Good Neighbors was able to con-tinue expanding its achievements thanks to the tremendous effort of our donors, volunteers, local communities, enterpris-es, government entities, and UN agencies across the globe. It is with great pleasure thatI want to share with all those ‘good neighbors’ the fruits of our common effort in the annual report 2013. In 2013, Good Neighbors implemented development and re-lief projects in 30 countries and opened new activities in South Sudan. We reached 1.4 million people helping them change their lives through Community Development Projects (CDP). In order to strengthen the impact and efficiency of our com-mon endeavour, we further consolidated partnership with UN agencies through the coordination efforts of Good Neighbors International Cooperation Office in Geneva. In particular, this year, Tanzania and Bangladesh joined Nepal and Rwanda in the Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities (SZHC) project, fight-ing poverty and bringing sustainable food security in some of the poorest communities of the world in collaboration with World Food Programme (WFP). With only two years left until the 2015 target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Good Neighbors has been preparing to expand its horizon by closely following the venue of post-2015 development agenda. We promptly responded to emerging development issues in harmony with the international community through collective advocacy ac-tivities while we strengthened our global action to protect the

2014 Achievement Highlights

Good Neighbors established global partnerships with UN agencies for overseas relief and development projects through communication and meetings. We sought the development and self-reliance of communities by implementing the Saemaul Zero Hunger Community (SZHC) in conjunction with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and conducted refugee support projects in Kenya and Chad in cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Good Neighbors increased assistance for refugees through support projects in South Sudan and Syria during 2014, and provided humanitarian aid 12 times in ten countries, including earthquake-affected Guatemala and landslide-hit Chile.

Good Neighbors held workshops for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment that was needed to provide emotional stability for children in the Philippines, which was devastated by supertyphoon Haiyan and displaced millions of people. We offered emergency relief funding in conjunction with Good Neighbors Japan and Good Neighbors Chile, and implemented emergency relief aid in partnership with WFP.

In June 2014, Good Neighbors hosted a forum on the achievements of Tanzania's Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Control Project, as well as the future direction of Korean NGOs in terms of health projects. Attendees shared achievements and best practices of the NTD control project, which has been conducted for the last five years, in Mwanza, Tanzania. The opening of medical clinics and health centers ( like the 카춤화 Mom Center of Good Neighbors Malawi) provided the groundwork for discussing healthcare projects.

Total($) : 31,980 Good Neighbors Cambodia hosts a campaign to pro-mote elementary school enrollment every semester to raise awareness about the rights to education that all children deserve, and to boost the enrollment rates of school-age children. In 2014, teachers, children, and residents in 꺼찌베앙, 쁘레이짜, 꼽, and 꺼네악 organized their own enroll-ment campaign. They were so passionate that they even used a boat to visit floating homes door-to-door to promote the importance of education. Their enthu-siasm led to an increase of the elementary enrollment rate to 93% on average in the four provinces. Exceeding the previous average of 77%. More children were able to take a step closer to the possibility of hav-ing their dreams come true through attending school.“My relatives persuaded my father to let me quit fish-ing and go back to school after they had come across the campaign held by Good Neighbors Cambodia. I will study hard and become a teacher so that I can help poor children like me to study.”

Good Neighbors implemented a wide range of education protection projects to increase opportunities of universal education, improve the quality of education, and raise awareness of the education sector. We provided support for schools, educational facilities, tuition fees, scholarships, and school supplies to enhance children’s access to education. We also provided education services for residents through education centers, libraries, afterschool classes, and daycare centers. In addition, we particularly focused on sustainable development through education by educating people on children’s rights and organizing campaigns to advocate the rights to education.

Meguara, Kenya, is a very isolated agricultural area. Residents overall education levels are low and the common practice of early marriage forces girls to give up on their studies. The poor education environ-ment is evident where over 75 students attend class together in a temporary classroom made of a tent.As a result, Good Neighbors developed a Hope School Project in Meguara. We were able to bring change to the province by listening to what residents had to say and collaborating with them during the entire pro-cess, from the selection of a school site, to construc-tion and operation. Hope School reduced the ratio of students per classroom by 40%, which translates into only 45 students per classroom. Teachers ex-pressed a sense of excitement, saying that they could now provide quality education for students with the equipment, programs, and support offered by Good Neighbors. Hope School gave the residents not only an opportu-nity of education, but also a chance to recognize the significance of education. The residents of Meguara are working hard to make their province a better place for education and give a brighter future to their children to become key partners or the development of their community.

Hope School Project With Hope TV SBS

Good Neighbors is developing the Hope School Project in Africa where demand for basic education is high, but education infrastructure is inadequate. Beginning with Yona School in Chad built in 2009 in partnership with the late Good Neighbors International honorary ambassador Park Yong Ha, the project was sponsored by Hope TV SBS in 2012 to improve overall education environments and enhance access to education by building schools, providing education equipmentand materials, and developing school curricula.Good Neighbors not only builds schools, but also works to reduce dropout rates through awareness programs. We seekto have an integrated community development structure by encouraging residents participation while expanding and diversifying education services. In 2014, we built and renovated 10 schools and provided edu-cation equipment and high-quality school programs, supporting a total of 8,193 students to grow their aspira-tions at Hope School.

Hope School gave the residents not only an opportu-nity of education, but also a chance to recognize the

are working hard to make their province a better place for education and give a brighter future to their children to become key partners or the development of their community.

Total($) : 7,985 In Rwanda, 45% of children under five are malnour-ished and suffer from stunted growth, which explains the high infant mortality of the country. Kagina is an underdeveloped rural area where 72% of the residents survive on less than a dollar a day. Innocent (6), living in the Kigusa village of this impoverished province, has suffered from epilepsy since she was in utero due to under-nutrition, and still lives with chronic malnutri-tion due to poverty.Good Neighbors Rwanda has malnutrition prevention projects for children under 5 in Kagina since 2012. We provided food for 540 malnourished children, includ-ing Innocent, who later became healthy as a result of this successful project. The number of malnourished children dropped to 26. “We educate parents to have proper knowledge about nutrition so they can continue to monitor their chil-dren’s condition after the project is finished. We have also supplied cows, hares, and vegetable gardens to 643 households to ensure that children can have bal-anced and sufficient nutrition. I am proud to see our children become healthier day by day.”

- Marie Ange ISHIMWE, Good Neighbors Rwanda Runda CDP Manager

Good Neighbors provided nutritious meals, medical checkups, medical supplies, and mosquito nets to those in need of basic medical services due tounfavorable medical conditions. We renovated local health centers and managed its operational capacity to offer valuable medical services to residents. In addition, we also provided food for malnourished children at school, which resulted in higher attendance rates.

NTD(Neglected Tropical Diseases) Control Project in Mwanza

Good Neighbors implemented projects for parasitic infection control in Tanzania from 2005(the year when we registered as an International Non-Governmental Organization in Tanzania) to 2008. The investigation, regularly conducted in conjunction with medical teams special-izing in parasitic infections, found the issue of parasitic infections extremely serious in most of the regions, which led us to select Mwanza, located near Lake Victoria in Northern Tanzania, for the NTD Control Project.

Beginning in 2008, our five-year proj-ect focused on health education, mass drug administration (MDA), environ-ment improvement, and health facility expansion, while treating 120,000 NTD patients to reduce the parasitic infection rate of Kome Island residents. In March 2011, we opened NTD Clinic, a hospital specializing in parasitic infections, the first of its kind worldwide. In addition, we built 30 water wells and bathrooms throughout the island to prevent the spread of NTD and to enhance the re-gion’s overall sanitation.

Change Brought by NTD Control ProjectMany residents of Kome Island say that they could see many changes, and that community members became noticeably healthier due to the support of Good Neighbors’ projects. The local residents and staff are empowered to bring change to their communities through the NTD Control Project, so that the community can support each other, even in times when Good Neighbors is unable to provide assistance. As Good Neighbors begins the second phase of the Tanzania NTD Control Project, we plan to focus on reducing maternal mortality and establishing a systematic maternal health framework in Shinyanga, lo-cated in the western region of Tanzania. Our goal is to support our neighbors in need, and bring about more change to Tanzania by 2017.

The children and residents of 타꿀디나즈 in Bangladesh were forced to drink and use unclean water due to the lack of proper water facilities. In addition, the lack of clean restrooms threatened the health of children vul-nerable to water-borne diseases. Good Neighbors Bangladesh installed 74 water wells and 260 restrooms to improve the sanitary environ-ment of 타꿀디나즈over the past two years. As a result, approximately 1,670 residents were able to drink clean water and live in a clean environment. Additionally, we provided education on drinking water and sanitation to increase awareness and to help them maintain their water facilities in an autonomous way to sustain a clean and hygienic environment.“Residents’ high demand for clean water and water facilities resulted in high satisfaction for our drink-ing water project. We frequently communicated with residents to factor in the provincial characteristics. The community’s active participation in this project brought about real change, and served as a catalyst for residents to become more involved in other proj-ects as well.”

Total($) : 11,907 Most of the residents in Hetosa, Ethiopia, are laborers and they suffer from poverty despite their hard work because of great fluctuations in grain prices. To tack-le the issue of food shortages, Good Neighbors Ethi-opia assisted the residents with organizing a wheat cooperative. The 394-member cooperative raised funds to purchase a large amount of wheat at lower prices and stored it before they sell it at higher prices. Good Neighbors provided seeds and fertilizers, lent farming equipment, and offered technical assistance to support their income generation. During 2014, the cooperative earned USD20,000, which led to more and more residents contacting the wheat cooperative to participate. “I am most pleased to see that we could break the cycle of poverty on our own. Of course, at first, we started with the help of Good Neighbors, but now the cooperative spearheads the efforts to increase income of our village.”

- 제일루 고베나/ Head of thewheat cooperative

Good Neighbors helped residents with the foundation and support needed to stand on their own feet by operating cooperatives, self-help groups, and social enterprises designed to fight poverty and pursue sustainable development. We supported cooperatives for agriculture, livestock farming, and small-sized startups in many different ways. The proceeds generated by the cooperatives were reinvested back into their communities for development, ultimately contributing to their self-reliance.

(CRC : Convention on the Rights of the Child)에 입각해 아동권리에 대한 인식을 개선하기 위한 사업과 다양한 옹호활동을 전개하고 있다. 무엇보다 소외된 이웃들이 스스로 자신의 권리를 알고 목소리를 낼 수 있도록 돕는 교육과 캠페인, 그리고 대정부 활동을 통해 지역사회의 변화를 이끌어 내고 있다.

The CDC holds a weekly meet-ing to discuss the major issues of their community and has a monthly meeting with Good Neighbors Malawi to talk about the direction and operation of major un-dertakings.In particular, the 14 CDC members, all elected by res-idents in 2014, have worked hard to further integrate the development of their community by organizing and running a school committee, a drinking water committee, a health committee, and an income gen-eration committee. “By participating in the process of building schools, wa-ter wells and generating income, all of us have started to have a sense of ownership of our community. Most importantly, the leadership training program provided by Good Neighbors gave us the opportunity to enhance our ability to serve as community leaders.”

- 다미아노 / Chairman, Community Development Committee

“Residents’ participation changes the future of the community.”

Good Neighbors ensures that residents engage themselves in projects in the form of a community devel-opment committee or a cooperative during the entire process of a project, from the initial research and development stage, to the monitoring and evaluation stage. We have been partnering with teachers, governments, and relevant organizations for sustainable community development and have paved the way for the professional and effective execution of projects, by expanding our partnerships with UN organizations such as World Food Programme, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and International Organization for Migration.

Emergency relief

Good Neighbors was the first to rush to anyone in desperate need of help for emergency relief under the circumstances of earthquakes, floods, food shortages, and wars. We provided humanitarian support 12 times for 10 countries in the form of emergency relief and recon-struction support for those affected by natural disasters, support for the refugees of civil wars, and risk reduction projects. In 2014, we worked in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help more refugees in Kenya and Chad for their settlement and those in Southern Sudan and Syria suffering from civil wars. We also provided relief supplies for the typhoon-hit Philippines, earthquake-struck Guatemala, and landslide-affected Chile while opening PTSD* workshops to help chil-dren reduce anxiety and get back to normal as soon as possible. *PTSD(Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

“Good neighbors became our sturdy pillars and roofs!” Kenya Kakuma refugee camp

The Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya was created in 1992, serving people who fled civil wars in Sudan. Ka-kuma, known for its long history as a refugee camp, has been home for many refugees who had stayed strayed for over two decades since they came here to avoid wars and violence. There is no way for them to engage in economic activities or leave the camp due to their status as a refugee. Relief organizations around the world are helping them, but the resources are always in short supply with about 110 new refu-gees flowing in every day. Most people live in a house with mud walls and a roof made of twigs or tarpauling sheets distributed by relief organizations. Good Neigh-bors regularly discussed project directions and plans with our partners UNHCR and KOICA, which have been cooperating with us since 2014, and checked the roles and assistance of each organization.

“People need home for safety. Children or women sleeping in an unsafe house easily become the target of crime. Moreover, everything in and out of the house becomes a mess because of mud during the rainy sea-son. People are frequently exposed to water-borne diseases because of water pools in the house. I believe that a solid house can bring a healthier and safer life.”

Child Right Protection in Korea

Good Neighbors spearheaded the efforts to enhance the rights of children through pioneering projects while swiftly responding to many policy changes re-garding children and welfare. During the year 2014, we cemented our position as a key player for the Korean child protection system and established a framework to ultimately prevent various problems faced by children and adolescents such as school violence.

We drew the attention of society on the prevention of child abuse and sought qual-itative improvement of psycho-emotional projects by preparing programs tailored to the needs of each region and by scaling up mobile group counseling therapies. We also encouraged volunteering of adolescents to help them practice the spirit of sharing as a mature global citizen.

Good Neighbors is an NGO for international relief and development established in Korea in 1991 and the Seoul-headquartered organization is currently imple-menting projects for child right support in Korea, social development education, overseas relief and development, and emergency relief. In 2014, we held cam-paigns in celebration of the UN-designated days such as World Day of Water and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. We suggested many different ways of sharing through participation-based campaigns emphasizing anyone can engage in volunteering and practice the spirit of sharing.

● Good Water Project : <Good Water Project> is our campaign for drinking water sanitation aimed at providing safe and clean environments for children suffering from water shortages and contamination in developing countries. The campaign conducted under the theme of ‘Give your saving water’ was partici-pated by approximately 3,000 citizens who were able to give clean water to chil-dren overseas.

● Birth of Mother : <Birth of Mother> is our healthcare campaign to support the health and growth of African mothers and infants. The campaign newly de-signed in 2014 by Good Neighbors received enthusiastic responses through mo-bile phones and SNS by letting people know about the unclean and unsafe envi-ronment for childbirth, which contributed to the high mortality rate of mothers and new-born babies.

● Hopeful Heat : <Hopeful Heat> is our campaign to pay heating expenses for poor families in Korea conducted together with Korea District Heating Corpora-tion and MBC’s radio program <Women’s Generation>. The fund collected by a total of 7,876 participants was used to pay heating expenses and provide neces-sary supplies for 79 institutes and 358 households selected among the stories submitted to the radio program.

In 2014, Good Neighbors USA was able to support several worldwide projects thanks to USA donors and partnerships. In addition to building 99 water wells in Chad, Malawi, Ethiopia and Zambia. 1 preschool in Chad, and 55 cook stoves in Guatemala, donors living in the United States sponsored nearly 1011 children throughout Guatemala, Malawi, Nepal and Chad, providing them with tuition, books, supplies, meals, medical assistance. and more.

● Coffee Meets Water campaign : Good Neighbors USA launched their first general crowdfunding campaign in August 2014, to raise funds to repair broken water wells in Sidama, Ethiopia, the largest coffee-producing region in the coun-try and where Good Neighbors Ethiopia implements a community development project site. Good Neighbors partnered with several Los Angeles-based coffee roasters as well as Let It Flow, a non-profit organization committed to repairing broken water wells in developing countries. The campaign achieved more than its original goal, combining both online and offline donations. The extra funds raised will go toward building a new water well in Sidama. ● ASICS LA Marathon (March 9, 2014) : On March 9, 2014, Good Neighbors

USA assembled a team of 10 runners to participate in the annual ASICS LA Mara-thon, running 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles) from the historic Los Angeles Dodg-ers Stadium and ending in Santa Monica next to the Pacific Ocean. This was the first time Good Neighbors recruited a team for an endurance event, all to raise awareness and funds to build new energy-efficient cookstoves in Guatemala.

● High School Club : The Good Neighbors Club at Zoo Magnet High School held a series of events during 2014 to raise awareness and support for Water for Life. The club met every week during the semester to discuss issues about water scar-city and how Good Neighbors has been addressing this issue by building water wells for communities in Africa. Under the leadership of its President Joy Gursky, the club has been representing Good Neighbors to the 300 students at its school through fundraising events such as bake sales. In 2014 alone, the club worked hard to raise $800 to go towards building a well in Chad, Africa. Knowing that ac-cess to clean drinking water can be a matter of life and death to so many people in poor developing countries, club members has expressed a sense of duty as a global citizen to further the cause.
