international students at the University of Mississippi - affectionately known as “Ole Miss”.
Our International Handbook for EducationUSA provides an overview of all aspects of our University and points
you to the information pertinent to international students. This handbook will be regularly updated so you have
the most up-to-date information at your fingertips. We always welcome your input so we may be able to help
you help us – as partners.
Established in 1848, the University of Mississippi it is the oldest and
leading public university in the state of Mississippi. The University
comprises 15 academic divisions and 22,000 students. Located on its
main campus in Oxford are the College of Liberal Arts; the schools of
Accountancy, Applied Sciences, Business Administration, Education,
Engineering, Journalism and New Media, Pharmacy and Law; and the
Graduate School. The University offers more than 200 academic degree
programs and its research enterprise is renowned internationally.
The University of Mississippi is proud to be affiliated with EducationUSA. As a
founding institution of the American International Recruitment Council (AIRC), the
University’s Office of International Programs also partners with agencies which have
earned full AIRC certification status. We expect that our partners will work in
accordance with American International Recruitment Council (AIRC) standards to
promote and publicize the University and its programs to qualified international students

Plus Course at the University of Mississippi’s Intensive English Program with a B
grade or higher. (See http://iep.olemiss.edu/ for further information)
International applicants who show evidence of having completed ELS’s Level
112-Intensive English for Academic Purposes with a B grade or higher
International applicants who show evidence of having completed EC English
Language Centres’ Upper Intermediate course with 80% or higher.
Exemptions for international students educated in the USA are different than
those listed above. Contact the Office of International Programs for further
details.
‐ Applicants with English Proficiency Scores Lower than the Stated Minimum
Admission with IE90-91: Undergraduate international applicants with English
language proficiency scores lower than those above but no less than TOEFL-IBT
69, TOEFL-PBT 523, IELTS 5.50 or PTE-A 47 may be admitted provided they
meet all other stated requirements. The University requires that such students
enroll in a 3-credit “English for Special Purposes”-course (IE90) + lab during
their first term of enrollment at the University and in subsequent terms if
necessary until the course is successfully completed.
IE 90 – English for Special Purposes (3 credits) + Lab (1 credit) English for Special Purposes offers international students a hands-on
introduction to the practices which constitute academic language use at the
University of Mississippi. Through small-projects, readings, and
discussions, students will investigate how academic English is actually
used in classes and for various assignments. In particular, students will
focus on developing skills and strategies that will strengthen their existing
expertise in the following areas: locating, reading and critiquing academic
articles; producing written work across a variety of genres (reaction papers,

discussion questions, definitions, syntheses); and leading and participating
in oral activities.
Conditional Admission is available to undergraduate applicants who do not meet
English proficiency test requirements as outlined above, but who meet all other
requirements for admission. Such students are only permitted to enroll in
Intensive English Program courses. They will be permitted to enroll in
undergraduate academic courses after satisfactory English language proficiency
for admission has been demonstrated by:
Submitting new TOEFL, IELTS or PTE-A test scores which meet the
requirements for admission to undergraduate study.
Completing the Advanced Plus Course with a B grade or higher at the
Intensive English Program at The University of Mississippi. (See

4. Costs of Study for Undergraduate Studies
Anticipated Costs:
The estimated costs of undergraduate study are based on minimum expenditures and present fees for 9
months of study and 12 months living expenses of housing, meals, and health insurance costs. The total
estimated cost that must be shown on the Affidavit of Financial Support does not include tuition,
