IFCE Interns Complete
Summer Semester
This summer’s internship has almost to the
end. Two of our interns, Morgan McCollum
and Sarah Chen, had left for their new
semester. Both of them are sweet,
energetic, and thoughtful.
We chat, hang out, discuss on various
topics of environmental issue, and circulate
among events/conferences in DC. Happy
times in IFCE during the 2011 summer
session will be good memories in the many
years to come.
We hope Morgan and Sarah smoothly
move forward in their studies and careers;
we also welcome environmentally
passionate students to join us.
“When we get down to green development and issues of that, there are common
understandings; it’s not the US that has all the answers.”

With the support from Yonker Research Institute, IFCE organized a heavy metal
pollution control tech mission to China from June 20-25, 2011.
The delegation includes:
Dr. Ping He, IFCE
Mr. Miles Bolton, Apex Director
Mr. Jay Borkland, Apex Director
Dr. Su Ge, Kelan Star President
Ms. Jie Liu, Apex engineer
The delegation visited Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, National
Development and Reforming Commission (NDRC), Ministry of Environmental Protection
in Beijing. In NDRC, Mr. Xie Zhenhua, the vice chairman, introduced the latest progress
in heavy metal control in China. He expressed welcome to US tech professionals to
participate relevant projects, esp. in Hunan.
The delegation then visited Zhuzhou, Hunan, a city troubled by heavy metal pollution
for years. They met officials and professionals and introduced latest tech /methods in
soil remediation and ports clean-up. The delegation also visited polluted sites and
discussed possible cooperation. In next five years, Chinese government. will invest
nearly 60 billion RMB to clean up polluted lands, soil, and water in Hunan. It will be a
good opportunity for US tech firms in this field.

Technical Training Program on Stockbreeding and Environmental Restoration Started up in Zorgai County
The Technical Training Program on Stockbreeding and Environmental Restoration was
launched in Norgai County of autonomous prefecture of Aba, Sichuan in May. The
purpose of this program is to protect the eco-system in Norgai County as well as to
improve stock raising, thus increase herdsmen’s income.
In addition to training workshops held in Norgai, during the year of 2011, this
program plans to arrange training and study field trips to other places for local
stockbreeding veterinary and herdsmen to learn contemporary technologies on
stockbreeding and eco-system management. The program is supported by IFCE and
the Bridge Fund.

Field Investigation in Meili Snow Mountain
Yunnan Natural and Cultural Heritage Conservation Council (YNCHCC) and IFCE’s Yunnan office jointly conducted a field scientific investigation to Meili Snow Mountain, one of core sites in Three Parallel Rivers world heritage site, northwestern Yunnan in June. This is a part of series of field surveys to Three Parallel Rivers. The field team consists of 16 scientists and professionals includes geologist, ecologist, conservationist, photographers, journalists, reserve managers, etc. During the investigation, the team surveyed the current status of environment, ecologic system, residents’ living situation, biodiversity, etc. They found the conservation in Meili is facing serious challenges from development and climate change. They called immediate attention from both governments and the public to this piece of land of wonder. There will be field trip reports, TV program, symposium, policy recommendations, etc, following this trip. For more info about this program, contact Linda Lian at [email protected]
