WelcomeThe University of Leeds International Concert Series plays an important role in the cultural life on the University campus and in the broader city region. It provides live music performances for students, staff and the general public. The Series is directly related to the teaching and research outputs of the School of Music and other areas of the University, and offers a wide range of musical genres and styles. The Series is committed to high quality and continues to employ high-calibre professional musicians presenting interesting and varied programmes. It provides a platform for student performance and supports the Leeds University Union Music Society. Collaborations with other music, performance and arts organisations from the city and region strengthen links with the wider community, and contribute to variety within the Series.

Highlights of the first half of the 2017-18 Series include our continuing collaboration with Leeds Lieder - this year exploring the songs of Schubert alongside those of his contemporaries, featuring performances by award-winning singers Nika Goric, James Newby and Mary Bevan accompanied by Joseph Middleton. The School of Music Choir and Orchestra also perform music by Schubert to mark the 20th anniversary of the University’s Schubert Institute Research Committee. On 11th November, Pixels Ensemble presents a programme on the theme of Remembrance featuring Messiaen's iconic Quartet for the End of Time. Free Friday lunchtime concerts include pianist Jill Crossland performing music by Bach and Mozart, early 20th century Russian music for brass quintet performed by Prince Regent's Band, a programme of Schumann and Mendelssohn by violist Timothy Ridout, and improvisation by Canadian jazz clarinettist Phil Nimmons and Steinway Artist pianist David Braid.

Details of concerts can also be found at concerts.leeds.ac.uk

I hope you find much to enjoy in this year’s Series and I look forward to seeing you at concerts soon.

Musicians of Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim Remembered.Friday 13 October, 1:05pm Paul Daly (wooden flute) Des Hurley (fiddle) Chris O’Malley (piano)

Today, Irish music is a well-known genre. In the 1920s the emerging recording industry in America recognised there was a market for music representing migrants arriving in the country. This concert focuses on a number of musicians from the counties of Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim in the west of Ireland who made recordings at this time which were hugely popular both in America and back in Ireland. Their significance and individual regional and stylistic influence complimenting a re-emergence of Irish traditional music remains hugely respected and acknowledged within the local communities across the west of Ireland.

The concert features a discussion with the Manchester based flute player Paul Daly, originally from Ballaghaderreen in County Roscommon and a slideshow of memorials to musicians in this area.

Russian RevolutionariesFriday 27 October, 1:05pm Prince Regent's Band: Fraser Tannock & Richard Thomas (cornets and trumpets) Anneke Scott (althorn and French horn) Phil Dale (baritone and trombone) Jeff Miller (tuba)

Victor Ewald - Brass Quintet no 1, op 5 Oskar Böhme - Prelude and Fugues no 1, op 28Alexander Glazunov - Brass Quintet, op 38 “In Modo Religioso”Victor Ewald - Brass Quintet no 2, op 6

Brass playing and the Russian aristocracy were intimately linked. Tsar Alexander III was an 'impassioned and highly talented cornet à pistons, baritone and tuba player' who did much to promote Russian music and in particular, his beloved brass music. He established regular brass soirées bringing together other likeminded members of the nobility. This programme includes music that would have been familiar to participants at these soirees. Ewald’s Quintets are a mainstay of the modern brass quintet repertoire, performed in this recital on instruments of the era. Böhme’s life reflects the turmoil of this period - a German virtuoso, fêted in early 20th century St Petersburg, only to be exiled by Stalin. Finally, the most well-known of the composers in this programme, and giant of the early 20th century Russian scene, Alexander Glazunov.

The Orchestral Music of SchubertSaturday 18 November, 2:30pm School of Music Orchestra conducted by Clive McClelland

Franz SchubertOverture Alfonso und Estrella Rosamunde Entr'acte no 3 Symphony no 8 in B minor (completed by Brian Newbould)

The programme is designed to explore the links between Schubert's 'Unfinished' Symphony in B minor and his incidental music to Rosamunde. The overture may have been originally intended for Rosamunde, while another entr'acte from that (also in B minor and with identical orchestration) forms the finale in the completed version of the symphony. The missing scherzo of the symphony has been completed from Schubert’s sketches by former Leeds lecturer Brian Newbould.

Ewan McLennanFriday 1 December, 1:05pm Ewan McLennan has come to be known as a guitarist at the very forefront of his generation; a troubadour, balladeer and storyteller cut in the old style; a singer that can move audiences with his passion and pathos; and a songwriter for whom social justice is still a burning issue.

From a BBC Horizon Award for his debut album to his performances on the iconic Transatlantic Sessions, recent years have been marked by numerous awards and accolades for his music. Ewan McLennan's most recent solo album, 'Stories Still Untold', continued this reception:

'Ewan McLennan has realised his potential on a wonderful album of traditional folk'

**** The Telegraph

Ewan's most recent project entitled Breaking the Spell of Loneliness - a collaboration with renowned author and journalist George Monbiot - seeks to use music and word to open up the issue of loneliness. Their UK tour and concept album have received wide acclaim and been featured widely, including live appearances on BBC Two's Newsnight, BBC Radio 4's Front Row and BBC Radio 3's In Tune.

FUAM was founded in 1989 to promote and support art and music at the University of Leeds. From informal beginnings as a group of staff members and friends with an interest in helping to foster the University’s musical and artistic life and outreach, FUAM has grown into an active and lively organisation, with a regular wide-ranging programme of events.

Through its fundraising activities it has provided financial support to both The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery and the University of Leeds International Concert Series.

Members receive invitations to pre-exhibition talks held in The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, enjoy occasional special events in connection with individual exhibitions, acquisitions and concerts. In addition a regular programme of off-campus talks and visits explores art and music further afield.
