International Career Development Symposium in Higher Education- Collaboration between United Nations HR Development and Kyoto University Higher Education –

The agencies of the United Nat ions system and other internat ional organizat ions are increas ingly handl ingissues of a particularly complex nature, which require a set of new skills for their staff . In order to prepare human resources capable of coping with emerging issues in these institutions, Higher Education needs to carry out a substantial modification of its curricula and structure. In this symposium, we will share practical experiences in both recruitment and career development from two UN officials, and introduce challenging examples from the university side. In addition, the establishment of new academic fields in response to evolving needs of international institutions will be discussed by introducing Kyoto University's doctoral program on Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability.

Mr Boliko started his career in 1988 as Assistant and Lecturer in the areas of Management and AdministrativeLaw at the Institut Supérieur de Commerce in Kinshasa. While teaching at the institute, he also worked as Chiefof the General Assembly Secretariat within the Conseil consultatif permanent pour le développement, a publicinstitution, and later as Advisor and Chargé de mission in the Office of the Minister of Youth and Sports, D.R.Congo. Upon completion of his studies in Japan, he taught at the Graduate School of InternationalDevelopment, Nagoya University before joining FAO as Personnel Officer in 1997. From 1998 to 2003, he servedas Liaison Officer in the FAO Liaison Office with the United Nations in New York, before being transferredto the Office of the Director-General as Attaché de Cabinet; he was promoted to the post of Senior Attaché deCabinet in October 2008. In January 2009, he took up the position of Chief, Recruitment and Staffing Branchin the Human Resources Management Division. Dr. Shuichi Kawai was appointed to be the first dean of the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability, Kyoto University in 2013. He was the vice president, Kyoto University (2009-2012), the director of Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, Kyoto Univeristy (2005-2010), and program coordinator of Graduate School of Advanced Leadership Studies(SALS) since 2011.

Over his 30-year career after getting his Ph.D at Kyoto University in 1980, Dr. Shuichi Kawai developed a strong research program in forest and wood science fields and humanosphere science. Some of his other noteworthy accomplishments include the president of the Japan Wood Research Society (2003-2005), the vice president of the Society of Material Science, Japan (2005-2007), and the fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science (1996- present). He received Japan Prize of Agricultural Science (2012) and Yomiuri Prize of Agricultural Science(2012).

Dr. Kawai has published over 220 refereed publications, 152 international conference proceeding articles, 24 reviews in books, and 12 patents.

Professor at Kyoto University since April 2012 where she teaches global communication. Ms Kawai has had a diverse career working for international organizations and private sector firms in Europe and Japan. From 2008 to 2012, she ran her own financial research institute in Basel, Switzerland. From 2004 to 2007, she worked at the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) in Paris and from 1998 to 2004 for the BIS (Bank for International Settlements) in Basel as a pension fund manager. Prior to that Ms Kawai was Chief Investment Officer at Yamaichi Regent ABC Polska in Warsaw (involved in the Polish privatisation program), a fund manager at Mercury Asset Management, S.G.Warburg in London, a management consultant with McKinsey & Company in Paris and a researcher with the Nomura Research Institute in Tokyo. Ms Kawai has a B.A from Harvard University and an M.B.A. from INSEAD.

Dr. Binaya Kumar Mishra is a Project Researcher at Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science, University of Tokyo (UoT) and a Visiting Research Fellow at Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, United Nations University (UNU-IAS), Tokyo, Japan. His research and teaching interests are in the fields of Integrated Water Resources Management, Food Security, Climate and Ecosystem Change and GIS applications. Dr. Mishra graduated in 2009 from Kyoto University, Japan with focus on regional flood disaster management. Later, he joined United Nations University as JSPS research fellow and continued as full-time research associate until October 2013. Earlier during 1999-2006, Dr. Mishra worked as Irrigation Engineer at Ministry of Irrigation, Nepal; senior lecturer at Kathmandu Engineering College, Tribhuvan University, Nepal; and Consultant Engineer at Everest Engineering Consultancy, Kathmandu, Nepal. Dr. Mishra has been actively involved in several research projects such as Asia–Pacific Regional Initiatives on Energy, Environment and Ecosystems (3E) Nexus for Sustainable Development at UoT; CECAR-Asia (Climate and Ecosystem Adaptation Research in Asia) at UNU; CSDS-IACC (Comparative Studies on Development Strategies considering Impacts of Adaptation to Climate Change) at UNU; Sustainability/Survivability Science for a Resilient Society Adaptable to Extreme Weather Conditions at Kyoto University. He has published his research works in several national and international journals, reports and proceedings. He is familiar with applications of several computer tools in the fields of water resources, environment, agriculture and geospatial analyses.

Obtained his PhD from Kanazawa University (Japan) and his MSc (Econ.) from Moscow State University “M. V. Lomonosov” (Russia). His PhD dissertation was about Japan’ s postwar economic development strategy and the possibilities for its application in the former communist countries.Prof. IALNAZOV started his career as a researcher at Sofia University (Bulgaria) and worked briefly for a UNIDO-sponsored project on “green FDI” . After obtaining his PhD, he served as a Research Associate at the Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and as Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Economics, Kyoto University.Since April 2013, Prof. IALNAZOV has been at the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS), Kyoto University. His most recent research topics are the “green transition” in emerging and developing countries, and the impact of EU membership on South Eastern European economies (in particular, Bulgaria and Romania).

Graduated from Kyoto University, Faculty of Engineering in Civil Engineering (1990), obtained Master of Engineering from University of São Paulo (1994), Doctor of Engineering from Kyoto University (1999). He worked as Associate Programme Officer at United Nations Environment Programme - International Environmental Technology Centre (UNEP-IETC, 1999-2001), Assistant Professor at Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies of Kyoto University (2002-2004), Lecturer and Associate Professor at College of Science and Technology of Nihon University (2004-2008), Visiting Lecturer at Faculty of Science, the University of Tokyo (2007), Associate Professor, Disaster Prevention Research Institute of Kyoto University(2008-2013), and currently working as Associate Professor at Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability. He is one of the founding members of La Plata River Basin Network (RIGA) and has organized series of La Plata river basin workshop (from Third in 2001 to Fifth in 2008) in collaboration with UNEP, WWAP and UNESCO-IHP-LAC. He has involved in UNEP GEMS/Water Programme for more than ten years, focusing on evaluating land-based contamination into the watershed and coastal zone.
