Thank you for your interest in Atlantic University School of Medicine. It is our goal to provide a high quality education from the Premed and Basic Sciences through Clinical Clerkships by offering a program structured to acquire residency and licensure in the US and abroad.

The Premed and Basic Sciences are offered on our campus in Saint Lucia, one of the most beautiful and safest islands in the Caribbean. Our 5th semester is conducted at a teaching hospital in the US and includes a live board review program with over 2000 questions and modular studies as well as patient exposure. This gives you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the U.S. medical system and interact with other health care professionals. This along with patient exposure and access to state of the art labs and lab results will provide students that complete our f ifth semester program a strong foundation to be well equipped and prepared for clinical rotations and the USLME. Upon completion of our board review course students then complete their Physical Diagnosis course and Introduction to Clinical Medicine with patients in Internal Medicine, Surgery, OBGYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Family Medicine at the hospital. The Clinical Clerkship part of the program is completed at teaching hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom. The Clinical Program is conducted over a seventy-two week period, divided into 12- week semesters, providing a broad exposure to the clinical disciplines of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Family Medicine, and Psychiatry. The core clinical clerkships will be the foundation of the student's clinical knowledge when approaching Residency. It is vital that the clinical clerkships are monitored and carried out in teaching hospitals accredited with such specialties. This is, therefore, a requirement of Atlantic University School of Medicine as well as a requirement of the Education Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

In addition, students who complete the 5th semester can begin an elective rotation while preparing, taking, and waiting for their USMLE board score. This allows students to utilize their time waiting for their board score and, in some cases, will make them eligible to meet the time requirement for their eligible match. Upon successful completion of the f ifth semester (Basic Science Program) students will automatically be enrolled in a one semester (12 week) elective clinical rotation at our U.S. teaching hospital. Students will be scheduled for 4 weeks in Internal Medicine, 4 weeks of Surgery, and 4 weeks of Urgent Care where they can apply their recently learned skills in PD & ICM. During this elective, aside from patient care, students will continue to prepare for Step 1 of the USMLE by attending weekly didactic clinical case study presentations and lectures in the application of Clinical Pharmacology, along with monthly NBME exams to evaluate each student's progress and USMLE preparedness. Each student's progress will be monitored by their student advisor (AUSOM medical faculty in the hospital) while at our teaching hospital. Any students requiring tutoring or assistance will then be scheduled with a tutor (physician) to address their area/areas of def iciencies. Students will then be required to complete the USMLE step one before scheduling their core clinical rotations. The tuition cost for our 5th semester is $7400.00 and our clinical tuition is $7900.00. Our student service fee is $250.00 per semester. Students must acquire their own malpractice insurance.

The pre-medical curriculum is for students who are graduates of U.S. and Canadian high schools, or graduates from secondary educational systems in the U.K., the European Union, and other qualif ied nations. The pre-medical phase of training consists of 90 credit hours of pre-medical coursework. Students who successfully complete this phase of training will advance into the Basic Sciences program. For a detailed description of the curriculum, please visit our website at www.ausom.edu.lc.

The minimum requirement for admission to the Medical School is 90 semester hours of college level course work. However, a baccalaureate degree is preferred. College studies should include: one year of English, one year of General Chemistry with Laboratory, one year of Organic Chemistry with Laboratory, one year of Biology with Laboratory, one year of College Level Mathematics, and one year of College Level Physics with Laboratory. Prerequisites are also offered on campus as part of our pre-med program and you are welcome to discuss this option with us.

Applicants who have completed their studies in countries having an educational system different from that of the United States will be evaluated on their merits and will be expected to have completed a pre-medical curriculum comparable to that described on the Admissions Requirements page. All required documents, if originally in a foreign language, must be accompanied by a notarized English translation. All transcripts documenting post-secondary course work completed at institutions outside the United States must also be evaluated by an approved international credential evaluation service such as World Education Services or other National Association of Credential Evaluations Services (NACES) member.

Foreign nationals intending to visit Saint Lucia to study are required to have a valid passport from their country and to obtain a valid Saint Lucian v isa . To v iew a l i s t o f countr ies who require a v isa p lease fo l low the fo l lowing l ink: http://web.stlucia.gov.lc/faq/do_i_need_a_visa_to_enter_saint_lucia.htm. An additional stipulation is that retakes will only be offered for classes that appear on your current transcript as fail or withdraw. Credit cannot be given for any course that cannot be substantiated. Students interested in transferring to Atlantic University School of Medicine are required to provide the same documentation specif ied by the admissions committee for any student seeking acceptance.

Individualized workshops are important simply because most LL.M. programs will be composed of students from various countries. The research and writing center should be able to make suggestions to a student based on individual need. A student from Saudi Arabia will have different writing concerns than a student from Thailand, and LL.M. legal writing instructors should tailor their workshops accordingly. This helps when the writing instructor or writing center is approachable. The student should be able to ask the instructor questions about research and writing whenever there is one.

An LL.M. writing program should also teach both the academic legal research paper and the legal brief. Most schools only teach one or the other. Yet, each is a different genre of legal writing that requires a different skill to master. The academic research paper teaches students how to be a scholar, which is an ongoing role tied to the responsibility of an attorney to engage in a dialogue about the law. The legal brief, on the other hand, teaches students how to make arguments, support arguments with relevant authorities, how to structure arguments, how to tell persuasive stories, and others. The legal brief is also the best method to train students to use the CRAC system, the standard rhetorical structure for U.S. legal writing, including law school exams.

Before making a final decision, don't forget that lawyers are writers, and writing is perhaps the most important skill you must learn as a lawyer.

applicants should also look for a program with an excellent legal research and writing curriculum.

In weighing your options, you should look for LL.M. legal research and writing programs that have the following features: (1) electronic database research and citation training, (2) individualized writing workshops, (3) an approachable writing instructor or writing center, (4) teaches how to research and write legal briefs or memos, and (5) teaches how to research and write an academic legal research paper.

Electronic database research training involves training in Lexis and Westlaw. Almost all law schools have an agreement with both Lexis and Westlaw for the companies to provide free research training for their students at the law school and free access to both online research databases while the student is in law school. The program should also teach students how to properly cite legal documents. Citations teach student to pay attention to detail, which is a critical lawyering skill.

Every year, LL.M. applicants from various parts of the world struggle to make a complex decision: what is the best LL.M. program for me? This decision involves asking numerous complex questions about affordability, location, and a law school's curriculum. Most often, however, LL.M. applicants forget to ask the most important questions: (1) what do lawyers do, and (2) which program will teach me or help me to improve to do what lawyers do?

As a lawyer and having taught at the LL.M. program at Case Western Reserve University School of Law for the past five years, I often find that LL.M. applicants often do not know or forget what it is that lawyers really do. Lawyers solve problems and lawyers write about how to solve problems. Most LL.M. applicants may focus their search for a program that teaches them how to solve a specific legal problem, say intellectual property law or international business. Yet, this is only one side of the coin. LL.M.

This formula creates the high caliber journalists for which Medill and Northwestern are known.

Northwestern students turn theory into practice through journalism residencies where they work in dynamic news environments, learning from real journalists and gaining insight into the hotbed of legal and ethical issues affecting media freedoms around the world. Students learn how to produce news pieces for television and how to market their ideas for articles; they learn the craft of writing features for magazines and then how to edit a tes go on
