Giant ice-cream cones, elongated fibreglass Pink Panthers and wooden panels of Buddhas embossed with Coca-Cola and Facebook logos – the London-based Russian pop artist Olga Lomaka’s work has been described as everything from bonkers to magical, humorous to existential.

Her sculptural series Pink Magic, which features that lanky, enigmatic panther, was picked out by rebel potter Grayson Perry when he curated the Royal academy’s Summer Exhibition in 2018, bringing her to the attention of 300,000 art lovers – and confirming her place among the capital’s pantheon of contemporary artists. ‘i grew up in Moscow but i always knew that was not my final destination,’ says Olga, 37, who even as a young child created art from dawn to dusk. ‘You could create anything on it just by decorating, which is exactly what I have done. I have filled it with my furniture,

artwork and accessories to give it my character, mixing old with new.’

Unsurprisingly, there’s not a stroke of greige in the flat. Being fearless when it comes to injecting bold, playful strokes of colour into a home is all part of being a pop artist, Olga says, but the secret is to not overwhelm a space. ‘Strong, bright neon colours can have a powerful effect on emotions,’ she says. ‘I use bright colours only as accessories, in artwork and textiles, keeping backdrops and larger pieces of furniture neutral.’

Regular trips to Alfies Antique Market, in north-west London, and galleries on the Pimlico Road as well as vintage shops of the Cotswold town of Tetbury, have proved rich hunting grounds, with Vitra, Poliform and designers such as

inspiration for her work. ‘The lockdown has helped me to focus, as the outside world has stopped distracting me,’ she says. ‘The limitations of time have also disappeared, giving me the freedom to be endlessly creative.’

Impressively, she has also found time to brush up on her Italian, and has developed a passion for meditating and

Bursts of bright colour are a must, but don’t overdo it. Olga recommends keeping walls and main pieces of furniture neutral, and using art, textiles, rugs and lamps to introduce bold hues. Don’t be scared of mixing up contemporary art and installations with antiques and high-street pieces.

Indulgently comfortable neutrally-coloured, deep-cushioned sofas and armchairs are brought to life by Missoni cushions, with quirky, animal-themed lamps and Venetian glassware arranged on bone-inlaid side tables, creating an intimate salon feel. Treasures unearthed on expeditions to some of her favourite countries include the antique wooden horse found on Sumba Island in Indonesia and a bronze Shiva figurine bought in India. Installations, sculpture and paintings – both her own and by others – are, of course, given a starring role in the scheme. Above her sofa hangs Melting Flower, a colour-popping abstract painting by Khadija Choudhury, juxtaposed with Olga’s own chrome Pink Panther sculpture.

With her vision for her home completed right before lockdown, Olga, who lives alone, is desperate to host her friends and family here. Her isolation has, however, provided powerful

running. But it’s the redemptive power of art that she will keep returning to.

Her new series of chrome sculptures, Through Time And Space, has just been released and shows her Pink Panther as a melting, futuristic idol sent back in time, returning to remind us about the importance of the present moment.

‘We need art now more than

ever,’ says Olga, who has been offering donations of her work to support the NHS.

‘Many artists around the world have been adapting to shutdowns by swapping physical spaces for virtual ones. Art has the power to instil positive messages, preserving how it feels to be in a particular place at a

particular time – and, in this sense, is a vehicle for social change.’ n Olga’s Through Time And Space series is available now, from £5,000. New prints, The Cosmic Voyage, will follow, from £50, through Jealous Studio; jealousprints.com, Instagram @olomaka and olgalomaka.com

The argument is if we should listen or have a bit of silence. i do some exercise, then i sit down and write until the late afternoon. our weekends have become like we’re on a cruise ship. my husband, Jon, and i have cocktail hour at 6pm on Saturday and cinema club on Sunday. We try not to drink in the week. what are you watching to cheer yourself up?i love Gogglebox. i’ve been struggling to watch longer format things, like films. i’m finding it hard to concentrate during lockdown as there’s so much information coming at you from computers and TV screens. how has your working week changed?i was filming and editing in manchester for the past few months so it’s been lovely to be back at

home with the kids and my husband. The slowed down pace of life has been an unexpected pleasure. i’m currently writing the next series of motherland. i’m not sure if i’ll include any references to lockdown. it’s too early to tell. i’m writing every day. what have you been doing to stay in shape?i do a nine-mile run at the weekend. i love The adam Buxton Podcast so i listen to that on my run. i’ve also been playing darts. i’m terrible at it but i love it. i love going to see the darts at Christmas at alexandra Palace. it’s better than pantomime. ‘The NHS discount has been a boon’

THE year got off to a great start for Cindy Acheampong, who’s 25 and a biomedical scientist at Bedford Hospital. For she

and her fiancé Samuel Donkor, a 27-year-old accountant, had decided to get married and buy their first home. The pair started house-hunting in January, having narrowed down their search to Nottinghamshire.

‘We wanted to be close to family and decided to concentrate on the area around Nottingham, where my future mother-in-law lives,’ explains Cindy. ‘We’d viewed a lot of properties when we discovered Harron Homes’ Brierley Heath development in Sutton in Ashfield. After watching a video of the show home, we booked an appointment to visit the site, and went on to reserve a four-bed house. Several things sold it to us: the size, the layout, the way it was styled - which gave us inspiration for how we could decorate our own home - and the location as the road links are good.’

But then coronavirus struck and the couple, who now haven’t seen each other for two months, had to reassess their plans. ‘Our wedding’s at the beginning of October and we’re crossing our fingers that we can go ahead,’ says Cindy, who is currently working shifts, testing samples from the most seriously ill patients for COVID-19. ‘We initially expected our house to be ready in June or July, and although construction has now restarted, it won’t complete until later in the year. At the moment, I’m renting in Bedford and Samuel’s in Coventry, and we’ll both need to find jobs closer to our new home. I hope to be able to move to a new hospital over the summer, but no vacancies are being advertised

at the moment.’ To her delight, Cindy realised that she’d be able to benefit from Harron Homes’ Key Worker discount, which entitles NHS and other essential workers to £5,000 off the price of their house, plus £1,000 worth of vouchers to use on home upgrades in Harron’s Excellence range.

‘Samuel’s often on Harron’s website and spotted that discounts were available for key workers,’ she says. ‘The NHS incentive was a huge advantage. We’ve used it to upgrade our flooring, lighting and amenities – little things that will make our house a

home. We’re so excited.’

Cindy and Samuel are also taking advantage of the Help to Buy scheme, which allows purchasers with a five per cent deposit to borrow 20 per cent of the price of a new-build (40 per cent in London). The loan is interest-free for five years and repaid when the property is sold.

Everything’s up in the air right now, so the couple have

a waiting game. ‘There’s nothing we can do about the

situation. If the house isn’t ready, we can rent for a couple of months, or crash with Samuel’s family,’ she says. ‘We can’t wait to get into our beautiful home and start our life together.’

Brierley Heath is on the edge of Sutton-in-Ashfield, a couple of miles from the Derbyshire border. Three and four-bed detached houses range from £219,995 to £304,995, and a four-bed Tonbridge design, similar to Cindy and Samuel’s, starts at £279,995. Help to Buy is available, and the Key Worker discount scheme runs until the end the year.

Developers throughout the UK are offering a host of incentives to woo buyers. These may be available on particular

plots or across entire sites and range from price reductions, stamp duty and mortgage contributions to part-exchange, furniture packages and other interior upgrades. ‘While price is often non-negotiable, push for extras, such as flooring or carpets,’ says James Forrester, director of stripeHomes. ‘stamp duty deals are often easily negotiable, and if the house is yet to be built, little details, like additional plug sockets, can save you a considerable sum of money in the long run.’

According to Charlotte Moxon, head of regional New Homes at strutt & parker, being in a proceedable position – whether renting or with your current home under offer - and having an agreement in principle from a mortgage lender will boost your chances of getting a good deal.

‘I once found my cousin asleep in the hallway at 10am’

Independent spirit: Fearne was just 19 when she bought her first flat

FEARNE Cotton, 38, has been presenting live TV since the age of 15, when she was spotted by ITV’s Disney Club. Since, she has fronted

the BBC Music Awards, Top Of The Pops, Celebrity Juice and Children In Need Rocks, as well as hosting BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge between 2009 and 2015. Now also a best-selling cookbook writer and founder of the Happy Place podcast, she is a prolific charity fundraiser and has nearly 11 million social media followers. Fearne is married to rocker Jesse

Wood, with whom she has two children, Rex and Honey.

Where did you buy your first home?I bought my first flat, in the Greater London suburb of Northwood, on the border with Hertfordshire, in 2000, when I was just 19. I was so lucky that I didn’t need to use an estate agent – I bought it from my mate [the EastEnders and Bad Girls actress] Luisa Bradshaw-White. I lived in the flat on

my own, but it was only about ten minutes’ away from my parents’ house, so I felt independent, yet also safe.

You must have been very sensible at a young age Yes, I hopped on pretty early. Owning a home was my main goal at that age. I have always been unbelievably sensible, and never spent excessively or wasted money on things I don’t need.

What was the flat like? It was 1950s in style, and tall and thin. Once you got through the front door, you walked up the stairs to the first floor, to the kitchen and living room. And then on the next floor was a bedroom and bathroom. It had very little character, but I loved it so much. I didn’t really care where I lived at that point as I was so desperate to be independent and out of the family home.

What changes did you make? Luisa had painted a huge mural of Ariel the mermaid with Sebastian the crab [From The Little Mermaid] on the bathroom wall, so the first thing I did was paint over that, in white, and then paint the pipework fluorescent pink. I didn’t have much cash so I decorated the whole place – extremely badly – myself. I painted a poem on my bedroom wall and added silver stars to the kitchen ceiling. I bought almost everything from Ikea.

Was the flat a party pad or a cosy retreat? A bit of both. I loved chilling out watching EastEnders at the weekend while dusting and cleaning, but also had some very memorable parties there. I once found my cousin asleep on the hallway carpet at 10am after a massive party.

Were you busy in the kitchen? I wasn’t a big cook back then. The kitchen was tiny, with a minuscule stove, and was mainly a place where I made coffee. Today, my agenda for a perfect kitchen is that it is big and practical. In my present home, we knocked through three rooms to create one big open-plan eating, relaxing and socialising space. It’s light in colour with pops of eccentricity. I designed huge pendant lights with old silk and vintage flowers cascading down from them. The main focal point is Jesse’s late mum’s blue French dresser.

Where did you move next?I could afford to move up the ladder slightly, which felt like a sensible thing to do. I moved just a short distance away, to a small cottage in Harrow On The Hill. It was adorable, with a lovely little outdoor space, and it felt like a complete haven.

Has your style evolved? My first home offered me the chance to experiment and to be as out there and liberated as I could. Plus, I was a teenager. My house now dates from the 1840s – I love old buildings – and it’s full of character. The colour scheme is mainly pink and green, with a touch of dark midnight blue. The room we have most recently decorated is our bedroom, painted in Dulux Pressed Petal, a dark, dusty pink. It makes it so cosy and warm.

What does home mean to you?Home means comfort. I need a place I can retreat to, and where I feel safe. I want my home to feel like a home for whoever comes in the door, and it also has to feel safe and happy for my kids. Life is so hectic: I need them to feel calm as soon as they walk through the door.
