ChallengeTo design a traveling exhibit that can fit in any schools gymnasium across America, and that is easy to assemble and ship around the country. The exhibit content, aims to connect the viewer with the U.S. soldiers overseas.

ResultDigital imagery, text and video, including photos of U.S. soldiers and their personal writings are dis-played in contrast with the writings of war journalists. There is also an area at the end where a local soldier/veteran from the community would volunteer to talk to the audience about his/her experiences. This exhibit not only gives a viewer the often hidden perspective of the U.S. soldier, but also symbolizes that war monuments don’t have to be made after the fact. The remem-brance of American soldiers at war hopefully serves as an inspiration to each local community it reaches and the soldiers as well.

ActionThe use of 3-form resins and glass panels, overlaid over the top of one another, create a semi-translucent and open-air viewing experience. The natural sunlight, shining through the gym windows will illuminate the panels, giving the feeling of the soldiers words and photos opening up, and exposing themselves to the viewer.

Zerak, Afghanistan, January,

2010. “It was my first evening

on a new base where I was not

familiar with any of the soldiers

yet. I decided to check out the

gym. Two soldiers were work-

ing out in the tiny, dirt f loored

gym. I knew I was getting clos-

er to where I needed to be in

the war when the floors of the

base’s gym became dirt. After

spending some time photo-

graphing I left to go and edit.

Later that night I heard a knock on my door and the soldier pictured came in. He had a thumb drive and wanted to know if he could have a copy of the images to send to family and friends.” Spencer Platt

presented byMAIL CALL

Operation G.I.GO is a program that aims to get veterans involved in their community as a way of healing. For many veterans, war does not end when the last bullets are fired; rather the war lives on in the mind and bodies of those who fight them forever. MAIL CALL is the first theme for the traveling exhibits first U.S. tour. The exhibit incorporates photos, videos and writting entries from soldiers overseas, as well as photographic and written media from war journalists. The idea however is that after each tour, the theme of the exhibit will change; and continue to make its rounds across America for the duration of the wars.

I’d read of our heroes, and wanted the

same,

To play my own part in the patriot game.

Pulse Service Station

ChallengeDesign and develop a prototype and business model for a sustainable transportation center that will provide information and encourage alternative means of transportation from bicycles and walking to electric vehicles and mass transit. The center should also be a public demonstration project of sustainable design.

ResultThe result is a mixed-use transportation center that reflects its sustainable roots via an earth tone palette and green building materials. The qualities and activities in the building allow people to get alot done quicker, so they can spend more time doing what they love.

ActionWith the use of sustainable materials, I designed a transportation hub unlike any other. For this group project I incorporated the engineers sustainable inventions with interfaces created by industrial designers to plan and design a space that was more then a transportation hub, but a one-stop station where the ultimate goal was to allow guests to do a maximum number of “typical chores” in as little time as they wished.

1 London Wall

ChallengeTo research and apply the open office space planning techniques and furniture used by European designers and apply these elements to the office space design of an American law firm. The site for the project was 1 London Wall, a glass, steel and Portland stone base building completed in 2003 in London by Norman Foster.

ResultThe open plan office creates a collaborative working atmosphere where everyone’s desk is easily accessible to others. It aims to promote employee interaction and teamwork amongst one another. Quiet rooms and team rooms allow for more privacy when needed. The Center Station was kitchen system that I designed specifically for the breakout space to consolidate all of the kitchen appliances to fit around 4, 3’ wide walls to allow more of the space for staff, rather then to appliances.

ActionWith a total internal area of 204,335 sq. feet, the vacated 12th floor of the building was bought by the American law firm Alston + Bird LLP. to accommodate 42 employees. I utilized European space planning techniques and created an entirely open plan office space, free of walls. Functional furniture pieces by European manufacture Bene and American manufacture Steelcase, provided functional and comfortable work stations.

Dey’s Market Stand

ChallengeTo design a modular display stand for a variety of vendors in an indoor market setting.

ResultThe modularity of the structure allows for quick and easy moving and construction/destruction when needed. It also can expand to cater to the needs of any vendors’ products. This was a group project and my personal contributions included: ideation, space planning, design, development, all SketchUp models and all designing/ SketchUp model making and rendering of the modular display stands and their components.

ActionLightweight powder coated aluminum post and beam components were used to make the stands. Thus, each vendor, depending on how much space is needed, can add more beam pieces to make a display larger.

Dey’s Market Stand

The rendered unit above was made to look like a newsstand. In the middle, 5 of the 18” tall by 3’ wide shelving pieces were stacked to make another display.

Onondaga Cafe

ChallengeTo design a themed restaurant within a vistors center located on Lake Onondaga in Syracuse, NY. The restaurant had to include both indoor and outdoor seating.

ResultThe cafe can hold approximately 60 people in the indoor seating area and 20 in the outdoor seating area. It has a full service kitchen with access to a large storage room on the exterior of the building. The cafeteria line is accessible from 2 ends reducing wait time and filters guests straight towards the cashiers. All of the design elements together, create an open air indoor dining experience that looks vibrant and thriving no matter what the season.

ActionDue to the cafes close proximity to the lake inspiration was taken from nature. An exposed brick wall reflects natural building materials as well as different colored ecoresins, used to reflect the translucency of water and other elements found outdoors. Customed designed water features were placed throughout the space to bring the sounds of the outdoors in. Also, some tables have customed designed tree sculptures built through the center. The translucent trees act as a privacy feature incase one or more parties wishes to sit at the table.
