“Rescuing Reading” Seminar: Changing the Trend

On February 15 "Rescuing Reading" provided a lively, engaging seminar for full-time and adjunct faculty, from multiple campuses. In introducing Dr. Tom Long, Linda Simmons noted that he had written, among other things, "Confessions of a Promiscuous Reader." Long, professor of English at Tho-mas Nelson Community College and former Commonwealth Professor, noted later that the nearly full house of faculty were so engaged and lively that it made it challenging for him to stick to his planned remarks.

In "Rescuing Reading," Long presented a range of scholarly data that showcased the status of reading today, especially in younger populations, and the alarming statistical evidence that their reading is decreasing at a faster rate. The data included the findings from "Reading at Risk," one segment of the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, conducted by the Census Bu-reau in 2002 at the request of the National Endowment for the Arts. finding noted that the 10 percent point decline in literary reading repre-sented a loss of 20 million readers. A subsequent 2007 study revealed a worsening picture.

He identified a range of questions that NOVA could study to document the status of reading at the College in a variety of disciplines. Participants voiced their frustration about students who do not read, about students who read with no joy and about trying to balance coverage of course con-tent with strategies to assist students with reading. To help participants design strategies tailored to these concerns and to a particular discipline, Simmons offered participants an opportunity to apply for grants funded by the Reading Across the Curriculum Initiative, an effort supported by NOVA's Professional Development Committee. Grants will be announced shortly.

VCCS's Northern Virginia Regional Center for Teaching Excellence, NOVA's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Reading and Reading Across the Curriculum Initiative supported the "Rescuing Reading" semi-nar.

Annandale Campus Homecoming Weekend: Basketball Games and Fun NOVA’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball

Teams played five games during Homecoming weekend February 15 through 17 in the Ernst Center gym. It was a rousing event and enter-tained crowds of spectators. A highlight was Saturday’s win by the Lady Raiders, 73-61, over Tidewater Community College, who had not lost a Virginia Community College System (VCCS) game in two years.

“They played as a team,” said women’s coach Liz Oduro. “I’ve seen an improvement with the girls from the beginning of the sea-son.”

The women’s team, whose record is 3-2 in the VCCS, also won its Friday night game against Thomas Nelson Community College, while losing to Garrett Community College of Maryland on Sunday. The NOVA Men’s Bas-ketball Team, coached by Mike Fitzmaurice, lost a close game Friday but scored an impres-sive 75-55 win over Tidewater Saturday after-noon.

Homecoming weekend featured free pop-corn, giveaways and a half-time exhibition by NOVA martial arts students taught by Basket-ball Coordinator Gamal Aboshadi. Singing the national anthem at several games was women’s basketball player Susan Rauch.

Annandale Provost Barbara Saperstone attended the games. Also spotted in the stands were Annandale faculty member Nan Peck of Speech Communication, Counselors Joann Credle (AN) and Wistar Withers (AN), Rich-ard Bautista (AN) of Information Systems Technology, Chef Mike Herbert (AN) of Hos-pitality Management, Assistant Dean Susan Thompson (AN) of Physical Education, Col-lege Registrar Alethea Hamilton (AN) and the new Dean of Campus Operations Christine Holt (AN).

The College Awards Committee

The College Awards Committee needs your help. Each year the NVCC Educational Foundation sponsors an awards program to recognize Outstanding Employee service. The College Awards Committee administers the process – this year there are four separate categories of recognition:

1. Full time teaching Faculty – maximum of three awards 2. Classified Staff – maximum of three awards 3. Non-Teaching Faculty (Counselor, Librarian, Administrator, Instruc-

tional Technologist) – maximum of one award 4. Adjunct Faculty – maximum of one award Awardees receive a $1,500 stipend and a commemorative plaque. The program is not self nominating – each nominee must be nominated by

another member of the College community. Any member of the faculty, staff or student body may nominate another member.

The Committee needs your help “spreading the word,” encouraging appli-cations and hopefully, your promotion of this program will ensure that deserv-ing employees receive the recognition that they have earned.

Copies of both the award application form (NVCC 105-065) and the proce-dural instructions can be found in the attachment section. In order to access online forms, go to the NOVA Web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/forms/pdf/105-065.pdf.

This year the application process will be done electronically (CD submis-sion). The deadline for submission is April 1, 2008.

For questions, e-mail Jim Lock, chair, College Awards Committee at [email protected].

Your help is needed!

Pharmacy Flu Shot Program Extended Because of a late influenza outbreak in Virginia, the Commonwealth's

free flu shot program through participating pharmacies will be extended through March 15. The program is for employees and their covered family members in COVA Care and COVA HDHP. Plan members may continue to use the list of participating pharmacies found on the CommonHealth Web site at www.commonhealthva.com. However, even if a pharmacy is on the list, members interested in flu shots should call the pharmacy directly to con-firm participation in the program and that they have vaccines available and are still providing flu shots.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2008-2009 Chancellor’s Fellowship for Classified Staff

HOTTOPICS

Second Year of the Office of International Student Services As the Office of Interna-

tional Student Services (OISS) begins its second year of operation, the num-ber of F-1 students at NOVA continues to grow. This year NOVA has F-1 students from over 130 countries. In the spring se-mester we have a total of 1,591 F-1 students with 939 pursuing associate degrees and 652 in the intensive ESL program.

OISS was established in November 2006 to coordi-nate services to F-1 students at NOVA. This includes processing applications, is-suing I-20s, managing data required by the Department of Homeland Security, ad-vising prospective and cur-rent F-1 students and work-ing with international stu-dent advisors on all six campuses to coordinate ser-vices.

There are three full-time staff members in OISS. Faviola Do-nato-Galindo, office manager, is originally from Puerto Rico. She completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Puerto Rico and is currently working on her master’s degree at George Mason University. Donato-Galindo began her work at NOVA as an outreach specialist on the Alexandria Campus and moved to OISS in spring 2007.

Karolina Dembinska-Lemus, student advisor, immigrated with her family to the United States from Poland when she was a child. She completed her associate degree at NOVA, her bache-lor’s at the University of Mary Washington and is a doctoral candidate in linguistics at Georgetown Univer-sity. She taught in the ESL program at NOVA prior to coming to OISS.

Steve Bennett, coordinator, has difficulty answering the question, “Where are you from?” As a child of missionaries, he grew up in East Pakistan and graduated from the International School of Bangkok. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Mars Hill College, and after serving three years as a Peace Corp volun-teer in South Korea, completed his master’s at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bennett has worked in international education for more than 25 years starting with UNC-Chapel Hill, and continuing with USIS-Panama, USAID Bangladesh and 10 years at The George Washington University. He began working at NOVA in the Annandale International Student Office in 2000 and became the first Coordinator of OISS in 2006.

Anyone who has questions, comments or suggestions regarding services to F-1 students are encouraged to stop by or call.

DO YOU KNOW... What is an F-1 student? International students at NOVA have a variety of visa types including A1 (diplomats) and J1 (exchange visitors). F-1 visa holders are in the U.S. to at-tend school and are required to enroll full-time in the fall and spring semes-ters.
