Originally from Wisconsin, 70-year-old Norco resident Alan Matley

is something of a cowboy with his love of country and western music, animals, and the outdoors. When you call his phone, you’ll hear country music instead of a shrill ring.

To stay active and healthy, Matley tries to keep himself busy. He still works part-time supporting the Montclair Police Department.

He also likes to spend time with his two daughters and

five granddaughters, go for walks, go fishing, play poker, and tend to his small menagerie of animals. He has two horses, one of which is the baby, Tally, and the other is called Cody, a name inspired by a conversation with one of his grand daughters. Matley also takes care of two cats, roughly 15 chickens, and his two faithful dogs, Maya and Peanut. He even owned a pot-bellied pig at one time. “I’ve always been an outdoor person, and I’ve got to have animals around,” he says.

Matley’s love of animals and the outdoors makes Norco, often referred to as Horsetown USA,® a fitting place for him to make his home. Norco boasts 700 acres of open space, 130 miles of horse trails, horse shows every weekend, and regular rodeos. It’s the perfect locale for a cowboy like Matley.

Besides keeping active with his animals, Matley is also sure to watch what he eats. “I try to take care of myself as much as I can,” he says, “Because…I won the lottery in 1994.”

a change of heartMatley was only 37 when he had his first heart attack and 45 when he had his second. After his second heart attack,

3

Matley’s heart was weakened and his body was not getting enough oxygen. The strains on his body disabled him for the next 20 years. Still, even though he had to stop and catch his breath after walking just 15 feet, he continued to stay active the best way he could. Over the course of his life he has had 15 angiograms and four angioplasties, and he has stents in both sides of his neck.

Through it all, he managed to stay positive. “Even when I was having my heart attacks and my bypass operations… I never considered myself sick,” he remembers.

Then, in 1994, a 16-year-old boy was tragically killed

in a motorcycle accident. From that tragedy, something incredible was made possible, and Matley received the boy’s heart through a transplant operation at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in West Holly-wood. “I’m like a walking miracle,” he says.

On a Thursday, Matley was given a beeper and instructions to keep it with him at all times, even in the bathroom, so he could be ready for the call if a new heart was available. “This was before cell phones,” he remembers. The following Monday he received the call and headed to the hospital with his daughters. It has been almost 19 years, but

Matley still remembers that they took him to the sixth floor of the hospital and that there was an earthquake before they wheeled him into the operating room. As he lay there, the nurse asked what kind of music Matley liked. “Western,” he answered. She gave him a small, white pill and he was out almost instantly. His next memory was waking up on Tuesday to the sound of his daughter’s voice, with a new heart beating in his chest.

Matley doesn’t take the second chance he has been given lightly. “My job is to take care of that heart,” he says. What is most important, according to Matley, is making

sure to stay active, eat right, and take his medicine daily.

December will mark 19 years since Matley received his heart transplant, his “19th birthday” as his doctors affectionately call it. “I have the best doctors that I could ask for,” Matley says, of his doctors at both Cedars Sinai and Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

listen to your heartMatley appreciates what a rare and special oppor-tunity he received. He does his best to make every day of his second chance at life count.

Even when his health was at its most difficult Matley did not feel sorry for himself, choosing instead to keep his thoughts and attitude optimistic. He has cultivated this positivity into a philosophy that he lives by today. “I don’t want to be that person laying in bed saying ‘why didn’t I do this?’ I just want to say, ‘I did this.’”

Stead Heart & Vascular Center: A Legacy of Love

William R. “Bill” Stead and his wife Carole

have been Inter Valley Health Plan members for almost two decades; Bill Stead has been a member since 1995, and Carole Stead has been a member since 1999.

Bill Stead is also a member of the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) Board and an emeritus board member of the PVHMC Foundation. And Carole was also an active hospital volunteer for many years.

Born there in 1929, Bill has had a lifetime connec-tion to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. His father was a member of the Hospital board, and his mother was a founding member of the Auxiliary. Both of Bill’s parents dedicated many hours to helping pursue the Hospital’s vision of community-focused healthcare. Bill’s father received the first pacemaker ever placed by the Hospital.

In 1986, Bill generously donated funds to PVHMC to help establish the Stead Heart Center, an act that shows his family’s commitment to the Hospital’s mission. The Center was named in memory of Bill’s father and mother, creating a legacy of love.

Bill’s parents would be proud to know that the Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ for certification as a Primary Stroke Center and has been named one of Thomson Reuter’s 2011 50 Top Cardio Hospitals in the nation and ranked nationally in the top 5% for patient care. In 2006, the Center expanded and is now known as the Stead Heart and Vascular Center. For more information visit www.pvhmc.org.

experts say Pet owners are healthier

Pets don’t just make lives fuller. They may help make them longer, says an official statement from the American

Heart Association.Owning a pet — especially a dog —

seems to have heart health benefits, the group says in the statement published recently in the medical journal Circulation.

“The data is most robust for people who own a dog,” says Glenn Levine, a cardiologist with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. But he says there’s reason to believe cats and other pets are helpful, too.Levine led a scientific

committee that reviewed the research on pets and heart health. The group says the studies are not definitive but do suggest:

Dogs may keep owners active (all those walks). In one study, dog owners were 54% more likely than other adults to get

recommended levels of exercise.

Interacting with a pet can lower stress responses in the body.

Pet ownership is associated with lower blood pressure and cholesterol

levels and less obesity.

In one of the best-designed studies, Levine says, researchers compared

people with borderline high blood pressure who adopted dogs with others who also wanted dogs

but were randomly assigned to delay the adoptions for purposes of the study. Those who brought home their dogs saw declines in blood pressure and were less likely to see their blood pressure and heart rates rise in response to stress. A study with cats and dogs produced similar results in people with high blood pressure and high-stress occupations, he says.

Most other studies involved comparing pet owners with those who did not have pets, meaning researchers could not rule out the possibility that people who had pets were just healthier to start with.

In any case, the experts don’t recom-mend that people with heart health problems adopt, res-cue or buy pets just for the potential heart health boost. The main reason to get a pet should be “to give the pet a loving home” and enjoy the relationship, Levine says. “We do not want someone to go out, buy a dog and then be content to sit on the couch and smoke.”

Pet Contest Raises Funds on Facebook

7

Over 57 photos of pets were entered in Inter Valley’s Facebook pet contest,

entitled So, Your Pet Is Cute? Prove it. Taco, who is only eight inches tall and weighs just a little over five pounds, received the most votes and won first place. Taco’s handsome good looks and snazzy outfit were not the only reason he was voted to first place. According to Taco’s owner, Rico Canlas, of San Dimas, friends from all over the world voted for Taco on Facebook.

The contest also served a worthy cause, for every Facebook entry, Inter Valley donated $5. Below, Rob Avilla from the Inland Valley Humane Society, ASPCA, accepts the donation of $285 raised.

TIPS for Getting Doctor Appointments Quickly

Sometimes getting in to see your doctor can be a challenge. Listed below are five helpful tips to

ease your way to your next medical appointment.

1If your doctor’s office is busy, ask to be put on a waiting list for cancelled appointment

times. Studies show that Tuesdays seem to have the highest number of office appointment cancellations. Let the office staff know that you are willing to wait in the lobby for a cancellation, and be sure to bring a good book to pass the time.

2 Avoid the medical appointment “rush hours.” Try not to make appointments during the most popular weekday time slots—Monday and Friday between 10 am and 2 pm. If you cannot wait weeks to see a doctor, try scheduling appointments between 2 to 4 pm.

3When calling to make an appointment, ask to schedule it earlier in the week. Wait time goes up as the week goes on. Avoid scheduling appointments later in the week, especially on Thursdays.

4 If your regular doctor is booked solid, ask if you can see a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant (PA). They can usually see you sooner and consult with your doctor if your symptoms are beyond their reach.

5 When you call to make an appointment, give a realistic description of your symp toms

or concerns. For example, know what your temperature is, exactly where you have pain, if pain is worsening, or any other relevant information. Instead of just saying you are “sick” or “in pain,” tell the person you speak with if you have a temperature (eg, 103 degrees) and give them your pain level on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest level of pain.

Santa Ana and Anaheim offices Open in OC

Inter Valley Health Plan is now in Orange County! We have opened two Medicare Information and Vitality

Centers (MIC) to serve Inter Valley members in our North Orange County service area.

The Anaheim Medicare Information and Vitality Center, at 927 S. Brookhurst St, celebrated their opening on Thursday, September 26. The “Luau-style” open house included island-themed refreshments and surf music, performed live by Woodie and the Long Boards. Guests sang along to some classic Beach Boys songs and applauded the officiated and colorful “lei” ribbon-cutting.

Then on Friday, November 8, the Santa Ana Medicare Information and

Vitality Center office opened at 2022 E. 17th Street, with a Fiesta-themed open house. In addition to enjoying “fiesta fare” guests also enjoyed

classic flamenco-style acoustic guitar performed live. The fiesta theme included a string of chilies used for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Please come visit our new offices for health education and social activities, or just for a hot cup of coffee and a nice place to chat.

In addition to the two offices in Orange County, Inter Valley Health Plan has eight

other MIC offices located in Banning, Claremont, Hemet, La Quinta, Palm Springs, Riverside, Chino

and Victorville. For more information

about the For Health and Living classes and social activities offered, please see pages 12 though 18 in this publication or visit www.IVHP.com.

Did you know that someone diagnosed with diabetes, who has strong social support, tends to enjoy better health

and quality of life than someone without this support?

Managing diabetes can be challenging, but the good news is that you’re not alone. Social support and education can be very helpful in the managing of your condition and both are now available at no cost to you through Inter Valley Health Plan.

Inter Valley recently formed I’m in Control, an exciting new diabetes support program. This program offers our 3,400 members diagnosed with diabetes an opportunity to meet and share their experiences, situations, and challenges. The program includes fun and informative workshops conducted by Inter Valley staff and group volunteers. You

can learn more about diabetes, plus the importance of both making healthy food choices and being regularly physically active.

Special events and informative materials are also an integral part of the program’s out-reach efforts. Helping to improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with diabetes and their families is always the aim.

Program manager, Ray Whitt, RN, says, “We recognize the challenges of managing diabetes — and want to help our members

feel more in control

of their health and life.” “The goals of

the program are simple: helping our

members control their diabetes condition and

maxi mize the positive health outcomes that can make life

more satisfying. The program offers opportunities for personal education,

improve ment in their communication with health providers, and the support of

a like-minded community,” adds Whitt. As a member of the support group, you

and the other members provide each other emotional and practical support. Hear first-hand how others deal with their condition, and share your tips. The group is run by — and for — our members, everything shared is kept confidential.

You will also learn methods for coping with the day-to-day challenges of diabetes management. Methods to help you lead a healthy lifestyle and reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, amputations, and other

complications of diabetes. Take charge of your diabetes and join one of

Inter Valley’s I’m in Control Diabetes Support Groups. Even if your diabetes is under control, with an A1C less than 6.0, you could be a source of education and inspiration for some of the other members.

Tracking how many steps you take in a day is an easy way to improve your fitness, lose weight and stay heart healthy. A pedometer

is a great tool to track your progress. This small device clips to your belt or waistband and does all of the counting for you—all you have to do is walk! Start slow, the ultimate goal is 10,000 steps a day.

If you are an Inter Valley Health Plan member, and fill in the blanks correctly, you’re eligible to win. If there is more than one member per house hold, a photocopied entry is acceptable. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, January 24, 2014. Send your Entry to: Inter Valley Health Plan, Attention: Communications Dept, InterView contest, PO Box 6002, Pomona CA 91769-6002.
