1 Introduction

Smart homes are based on the concept of integrating intelligenttechnologies into residential spaces aiming to increase the qualityof life. Emergence of this concept is a promising solution for majorconcerns towards building sector namely, energy consumption andenvironmental impacts. Besides, smart homes offer constant mon-itoring and controlling for the patients. Smart homes can detectthe residents behaviors and activities through sensors and actuatorsinstalled throughout the unit. Nowadays, many efforts in emphasiz-ing for green environment and energy saving which becoming moreprominent. Electrical appliances, automobiles, airplanes and secu-rity system demand the ability of these systems to adapt accordingto the current situation and capable of autonomously analyzes dataand responds to the preset requirement [1]. This paper presents anoverview of smart homes while addressing their essential aspects. This study comprehensively defines smart homes. It is expressedthat, the concept of smart homes is intertwined with applicationof various intelligent technologies. The power outlets in our homeshave switches and sockets with wired connections. A person has tophysically move and operate the switch either on or off and apply orcontrol power to the home appliance. The person who is away fromhome can not either control appliance or know the current statusof the same and this might result in wastage of electrical energy.People may experience electrical shock in case the connections areexposed. An automated system is needed to eliminate bulky wiredconnections of switches and sockets in the power outlet [2]. Thedesign of automated system should be simple and easy to controlthe home appliances remotely and also be monitored their status atthe same time with wired/wireless access gateways [3-4]. For elderly

people and differently able persons, it is difficult to operate homeappliances due to their immobility. According to the Global Bur-den of Disease, 2004 estimates nearly 15.3% of the world populationconstitute moderate or severe disability, while 2.9% of the same hassevere disability. Among those below 15 years old, comprises 5.1%and 0.7% while those among 15 years and above the figures were19.4% and 3.8% for moderate and severe disability respectively. InIndian scenario, Census 2001 revealed that over 21 million peoplein India suffering from one or the other kind of disability compris-ing about 2.1% of the total population [5-6]. Thus, for such peopleit is significant to have an automated system which provides easyaccessibility to control the home appliances remotely. Dependingon the type of disability, one can control the home appliances eitherby using touch sensitive panel with graphical buttons to control thespecific home appliance. Smart home system is very useful for fam-ily safety precaution as we cannot have manual security 24 hours aday. Smart system will be very helpful in maintaining a sustainableenvironment when we can monitor our electricity usage and controlour electrical dependencies. In this work, a system has been de-veloped to control the internal and external lighting, temperaturesystems and fire alarm of the house by using LabVIEW.

2 APPROACH AND METHODS

Smart home system uses advanced computer technology and au-tomatic control technology, which combines the subsystem into acontrol system including lighting control, temperature control andfire alarm system. Computer interfacing and remote control unitinterfacing are the two basic interfaces in smart house automa-tion system. Computerized device that provided with LabVIEW isthe main controller unit for all systems in the house. It receives, processes information from sensors and update data for the differ-ent systems, and transmit controlling signal to house systems andswitching output devices [7]. In addition, LabVIEW makes the abil-ity to monitor the important operations in order to be informed ofthe changes in the system. Users can also control the difference sys-tems abilities, and chose the best system that required. In additionto LabView interface for the smart house, remote control interfac-

ing is available to control some applications in the house, and itis connected to LabView for other applications. Figure 1 depictedthe block diagram of intelligent smart home. Smart home basicallyconsists of electronic and electrical equipments. They include sen-sor and indicators in order to sense and indication of the signal. Allthe subsystems are connected to LabVIEW as the main controllerunit of the system. LabVIEW takes various inputs from connectedsensors and processes it according to defined program and then itprovides logical output to whole housing systems. The LabVIEWwill control the internal lighting, external lighting, temperature andfire systems in the house [8-10].

provides logical output to whole house’s power system. Its addi-tional features is that it is having power protection system also, sowhen any fault occurs inside home the protection system immedi-ately traps the main power source. The LabVIEW will control theinternal lighting, external lighting, temperature, fire alarm systemsin the house.

A. Internal Lighting System: The internal lighting system con-sists of a motion sensor and lamps which there are connected tomyRIO and LabVIEW software program. This system will makean automatic lighting in the home when there is any movementinside it. The motion sensor detect whether there is any humanpresence in the building or not. If not it will send a signal to Lab-VIEW and it switch off the device. in the building. If there ishuman presence the device will be switched on automatically. If wedon’t want the lamp to glow, it can be manually switched off. Thetimer circuit is used for some specific area where the lamp glowsfor a fixed period of time.

B. External Lighting System: External lighting system consistsof sun cell, dimmers and lamps which are in contact with LabVIEWsoftware program. External lighting system depends on the read-ing of sun cell. The output of the sensor will be in analog form.Depending on the time of morning and night time the Lab VIEWsoftware program control the status of external light lamps whichis as shown in Figure 4. Dimmer can use to make a small lamplighting percentage. In early morning and in evening, the dimmerswill be on.

C. Temperature System: Both internal lighting and air con-ditioning systems are activated when motion sensor detects thepresence of humans in the house. The key objective of the tem-perature sensor is that it will take the reading of temperature valuefrom the temperature sensor. After processing the structure in the

program, LabVIEW sends a heating or cooling signal to the sys-tem, depending on the room temperature sensor and critical valueof temperature that required. When the room temperature sensedvalue is greater than or less than the critical temperature, thenLabVIEW sends the signal to the device to cool or hot it up to thecritical temperature and then maintain constant critical tempera-ture which is shown in the Figure 5 and 6 respectively.

C. Fire Alarm System: This section includes the design and useof detection, signaling and suppression systems. Smoke detectorand heat detector are used in the smart house. We started withutilizing caution siren to produce a heap moaning sound to expressthe nearness of hazard. After processing the input data, LabVIEWwill send a set signal to alarm siren to make a load sound. TheLabVIEW program gives a flexibility to select the steps that theprogram should do which is depicted in Figure 7.
