Our aim is to promote excellence in Mathematics and how this can be used with technology in order to improve the performance of learners and also for teachers. We know that South Africa received a poor rating in both Maths and Science education, and ranks 146 out of 148 in terms of education quality (2.1 out of 7).

Due to these poor learning standards, the economy of South Africa has been greatly impacted. We look to teachers as the solution. By focusing on teacher performance we aim to improve these statistics.

We are going to present two types of learning

Defining Blended and Adaptive Learning

What do you think those two terms mean?

Blended Virtual ModelRemote, online learning

complemented with spending time with a teacher or traditional

classroom experience on an as-needed basis.

Rotation ModelStudents rotate on a fixed schedule

between learning online and learning with a teacher in a traditional classroom

setup.

Flex ModelStudents receive most of their instruction through online tools and curriculum and teachers

provide on-site backup support.

Self-Blend ModelStudents choose to take one or

more courses online to supplement their traditional

school’s offerings.

What is Adaptive Learning?

“When software adapts content to the knowledge level of the learner to create a more customized learning experience.”

(EdSurge Wiki, 2013)

In other words…

… the program chooses upcoming questions/content based on a student’s demonstrated proficiency.

Let focus on IXL as an example of adaptive learning

IXL Overview

● “the world’s leading maths practice website”● not maths lessons● South Africa CAPS● algorithmically generated questions that adapt to students’ skill levels● varied question types ● over 2,000 mathematical skills covered

Introduction

● Students can work at any level ● Grade 7 student can review Grade 6 maths ● requires internet connection ● not free / not open ● Students immediately are shown the correct answer with an explanation if they answer incorrectly

Education technology programs can’t replace skilled teachers & tutors.

These are some things they can do:

● supplement teacher instruction

● track learning data

● provide customized learning plan for students

● generate immediate feedback for students, teachers and parents

● allow students to interact with dynamic models & simulations

● automate routine tasks (make your time more efficient)

● provide structured environment to learn

Preparing for the futureAs computers are increasingly used for routine tasks in the workplace, a far greater proportion of employees are engaged in tasks that require them to be flexible and creative problem solvers.

Our lives are increasingly complex as new technology provides almost infinite possibilities for research, entertainment, collaboration and participation in community activities.

21st century in schools

21st century teachers must prepare students to work in today’s workplaces. Teachers must stay current with the ways industry, students and families use technology in their daily lives.

Imagine a classroom like this with

• critical thinking

• communication

• collaboration

• creativity

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Information is available everywhere - on the Web, in the media, and in homes. Critical thinking and problem solving empowers students to

• assess the credibility, accuracy and value of information

• analyze and evaluate information

• frame the problem

• make reasoned decisions and take purposeful action to solve the problem

Communication and Collaboration

It is important to consider how today’s technologies shape words and images. Students receive many of their messages today through one or more digital devices. Students must be able to effectively analyze and process the different types and format of communication in their lives today.

Communication and Collaboration empowers students to • understand, manage, and create effective oral,

written, and multimedia communication in a variety of forms and contexts

• demonstrate teamwork and leadership, working productively with others,

• adapt to varied roles and responsibilities,

• exercising empathy, and respecting diverse perspectives

CreativityCreativity leads to the ability to think unconventionally, question the majority, imagine new scenarios and produce astonishing work.

Creativity can empower student to

• create jobs for themselves and others with an entrepreneurial mindset

• recognize and act on opportunities

• embrace risk and take responsibility,

• develop, implement, and communicate new ideas to others

• stay open and responsive to new and diverse perspectives
