Opiate Epidemic

“Drug addiction has become a public health crisis, but I don't feel the social will to attack it exists. Drug-related deaths have increased 400% from 1997. Are these really acceptable losses to us?” Dr. Thomas Andrew, NH Medical Examiner

Treatment & Recovery

Page 18: Integrated System of Care

Substance Use Disorders

• Considered social stigma;

still a 'dirty secret'

• Can affect ANYONE

• Not a moral issue - is a

brain disease & behavioral

disorder

• Once dependent, choice is

removed

• High rates of comorbidity

Recovery in NH

Recovery - a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.

Recovery is built on access to evidence-based clinical treatment and recovery support services for all populations.

Challenges for NH

Page 23: Integrated System of Care

NH Health Protection Plan (Medicaid

Expansion)

What is it?:

• A federally funded, locally managed health care program that expands

• Provides coverage to low income NH residents

Page 24: Integrated System of Care

• Only 6% identified as needing treatment can access it- Second lowest in the Nation

• Increased Medicaid coverage could double people receiving treatment (another 7,000+ people)

• Dependent on ability of providers to expand capacity to meet need
