North Africa Research Group Fieldwork Updates on field studies. Extensive logging and sampling of sections in the Agadir and Tarfaya Basins Conferences Presentations made at EAGE, IAS, AAPG, PESG/HGS Africa Conference. Publication update. Integrated regional studies focussed on the North Atlantic margin 11 PhDs, supported by leading academic staff at Manchester, TuDelft and collaborating institutions NARG continues to expand the North Atlantic study, with 11 PhDs in 2016 working on integrated projects along the Moroccan margin. We are refining the biostratigraphy of the Early Cretaceous and Jurassic to develop type sections and paleoenvironmental models. Seismic and well data supplied by ONHYM allows extension offshore with the aim of developing a fully integrated source to sink study. This includes modelling the complex salt tectonics and evaluating the evolution of the Cretaceous basins. New PhD projects will commence this year to extend the reconnaissance work by defining the provenance of the Early Cretaceous clastics and extending the Jurassic study to include the diagenesis, a key factor in determining reservoir characterisation. The Cenomanian-Turonian source rock study aims to better understand controls on TOC richness comparing Atlantic margin and Tethyan realms. Research has been presented at recent conferences at the EAGE, IAS and AAPG. We continue to strengthen our capability, building links with Luc Bulot at Marseille and now involving Mike Simmons (Halliburton) to add biostratigraphic capacity. New Start PhDs Nawwar Al-Sinawi joined in April, to work on diagenesis of Jurassic. New Provenance PhD to start in Sept. Figure 7: Schematic structural section across the Hoggar Massif from the Berkine Basin in the north to the Iullemmeden Basin in the south (see transect in Fig. 1). Note that the Hoggar had an earlier history of uplift with significant erosion of the Paleozoic sequence during the Hercynian orogeny. Preserved thicknesses are

taken from well data (Illizi-Berkine), geology maps and published cross sections (Iullemmeden Basin, Zanguina et al., 1998; Genik, 1993; Dautria & Lesquer, 1989). The eroded stratigraphy of the Tim Mersoï,

Hoggar and Illizi regions is projected above the present day surface and calibrated to ~ 1 km of exhumation in Well A, ~ 0.9-1.6 km exhumation in the Serouenout area, and peak burial depths of ~ 1.7-2.3 km for the Visean projected from the Arlit area. Note that the actual magnitude of exhumation in Arlit/Arouta (on the flank of Aïr; Fig. 1) is higher than where it is projected on this section (Carboniferous at surface). Regional data suggests portions of the Central Hoggar may have been inundated with > 1 km of Upper Cretaceous – lower Paleogene sediment. Cenozoic rock uplift across the Hoggar occurred over a distance of >1,500 km

from north to south, as indicated by the tilted Cenozoic stratigraphy in the Berkine and Iullemmeden basins. The magnitude of rock uplift, as opposed to exhumation, reaches in excess of 2 km within the core of the

Hoggar Massif. Deposition of Upper Eocene-Pliocene sediments (the “Continental Terminal”) across Saharan Africa (Kilian, 1931) may represent the onset of clastic sedimentation derived from the growing intracratonic

swells.
