Page 1: Integrated Process Systems

We offer design and fabrication of process systems for hydrogen separation, purification, liquefaction and reliquefaction.

Ammonia ProductionWith over 80% of the world’s ammonia production being dedicated to fertilizer manufacture, often in remote locations, proven performance and maximum reliability is paramount. That’s why leading ammonia technology licensors have selected Chart as a preferred supplier for their synthesis gas purification systems. Chart supplies detailed process design along with mechanical design and fabrication of complete cold box assemblies, including the necessary supporting equipment to effect the required separation and purification.

Engineering, Procurement, FabricationA Chart cryogenic gas processing system is a complete package solution comprising process technology, detailed mechanical design, Chart manufactured proprietary equipment and other specialized capital equipment sourced from partner companies. Start up and commissioning support along with after-market and maintenance consulting can be provided as required.

This focused, yet flexible, EPF model perfectly positions Chart to operate across the supply chain as the partner of choice for owners, operators, end-users and EPC contractors alike.

Chart Energy & Chemicals’ cryogenic process design and system fabrication experience dates back to the 1950’s when, as part of Arthur D. Little, we developed the first viable Helium Liquefaction System. Since that time, using process technology and know-how pioneered by Chart, the business has developed to focus on cryogenic hydrocarbon processing applications with target markets including Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Nitrogen Rejection Units (NRU), Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) Recovery, Hydrogen Recovery and other specialty cryogenic separation and recovery systems. Chart holds patents in many of these areas.

Furthermore, Chart designs and manufactures the heat exchangers and cold boxes that are mission critical for cryogenic gas processing applications. It is the vertical integration of our process technology and proprietary equipment that enables us to offer robust, reliable and cost efficient ‘Concept to Reality’ solutions to address evolving industry challenges and new markets.

Chart’s principal cold box manufacturing facility is in New Iberia, LA and offers direct waterside access. Brazed aluminum heat exchangers are designed and manufactured in La Crosse, WI with a manufacturing facility in Wuxi, China and Tulsa is the home for engineering and manufacture of air cooled heat exchangers.

Petrochemical ProcessingWhether it’s a grassroots complex, plant revamp, debottlenecking or energy conservation project, Chart is the right partner for maximizing product recovery and energy efficiency in your cryogenic processing systems.

Propane DehydrogenationApproximately 5% of the world’s propylene supply is produced commercially by dehydrogenation of propane.

Chart is a pre-qualified supplier of the mission critical cryogenic hydrogen / propylene separation system for the principal propane dehydrogenation processes and offers complete end-to-end ‘Concept-to-Reality’ designs.

Ethylene ProductionChart supplies brazed aluminum heat exchangers and cold boxes custom designed for all cryogenic heat recovery configurations offered by the industry’s technology licensors. We also provide in-kind replacement systems for existing and revamped facilities. Key to Chart’s success is the ability to design and fabricate systems which make use of our proprietary heat transfer knowledge and equipment.

Hydrogen RecoveryChart is a leader in cryogenic process design in the areas of industrial gas and light hydrocarbon systems where hydrogen recovery is essential.

Nitrogen RejectionChart has delivered more large scale NRUs than any other supplier of nitrogen rejection technology. Our experience, with in-house design and fabrication of NRUs spans more than 40 years and draws on our proprietary process technology.

From the first integrated NRU/NGL unit to handle variable nitrogen content to the world’s largest single train NRU, Chart’s integrated systems to separate and remove nitrogen and recover natural gas liquids and helium, guarantee our position at the vanguard of nitrogen rejection technology.

Moreover Chart’s NRU design knowhow extends to adjunct systems that recover high purity LNG and refrigeration grade liquid nitrogen if desired.

Natural Gas ProcessingForecast demand for natural gas will continue to rise as consumers seek a cost efficient, environmentally friendly source of energy and unconventional sources, including stranded gas reserves and associated gas, will have a bigger stake in the overall supply picture. Chart’s natural gas processing technology is perfectly pitched to support these worldwide developments.

NGL RecoveryChart delivers customers an optimized solution for extracting valuable natural gas liquids (ethane, propane and butane) from a natural gas stream. Chart’s engineering expertise resides in our ability to tackle the most onerous applications where NGL recovery is integrated with additional gas processing operations.

Helium RecoveryHelium is largely recovered as a by-product of natural gas processing and Chart’s process expertise and proven experience in providing integrated NRU systems that enrich and recover helium is highly regarded by companies around the world seeking to exploit their valuable helium resources.

CO2 Recovery (Ryan-Holmes Process)Chart pioneered the technologies of economically separating acid gases from light hydrocarbons using distillation columns. This process is particularly suited to gas streams containing high concentrations of CO2 (>50%) and therefore ideal for Enhanced Oil Recovery CO2 Flood operations. For gas streams rich in high value natural gas liquids an additional process step to recover and monetize these can be incorporated.

Liquefied Natural GasChart offers complete liquefaction plant solutions for pipeline gas and the monetization of small and midsize natural gas reserves. Chart patented and proprietary IPSMR® process technology improves operating efficiency and reduces power consumption compared to competing technologies. With all Chart plants shop fabrication is maximized in order to minimize field construction.

Small-scaleChart’s solution comprises a choice of 3 standard plants with nominal liquefaction capabilities of 165, 400 and 725 tons per day respectively. The basic scope includes all equipment required to liquefy pipeline quality gas with optional bolt on modules for pre-treatment, nitrogen rejection and natural gas liquids recovery to cater for a variety of raw gas compositions.

Mid-scale‘Scale adapted’ liquefaction trains up to 2 MMTPA utilizing proven shop fabricated equipment available commercially in today’s market. Chart’s modular solutions offer reduced capital cost, faster project execution and faster LNG to market for mid-sized gas fields.

BaseloadChart designs and supplies a flange to flange solution for the ethylene and methane process cold boxes for the ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade® process. Chart’s scope includes brazed aluminum heat exchangers (BAHX), inter-connecting pipe work, process separators and Core-in-Kettle® units.
