The Atlantic Salmon: Life Cycle
Broodstock: Breedingon selected importantcharacteristics: growth,disease resistance,shape, colour etc.
Spawning and fertilisation: Eggs are stripped from females and mixedwith milt from male fish
Eyed eggs: After25-30 days fertilizedeggs show “eyes”The maturation isdependant on temperature.5000 eggs/litre
Alevins: Small (<2.5 cm), immaturelarvae with yolk sack providing first stage nutrition.When yolk sack is absorbedthe fish is transferred to start feeding
Fry/Parr: Start feeding of small fish is a criticalstage. Mortality ca 5% Temp: 12-14 ºC. Fish is growing in FW sites to around 80-100g (ca 12 months)Vaccination and grading is important. Gradual adaptation to life in seawater (smoltification)
Transfer to seawatersites by wellboat
On-growing in seawater sitesto around 4.5-5,0 kg (ca 12 months). Transport topacking station.
Slaughter, gutting and packing Secondary processing
The total production cycle takes ca 12 monthsin freshwater plus 14-18 months in seawater =In sum 26-30 months (in Norway)

EUREPGAP Integrated Aquaculture Assurance”Today EurepGAP launched the new EurepGAP Integrated Aquaculture
Assurance Standard for the retail and food service market. This new
standard provides Aquaculture Farms and retailers with a set of criteria
for Good Aquaculture Practices.
The new standard follows the format of other EurepGAP codes, covering
the critical areas from record keeping, chemicals/medicines management,
worker health and safety and environmental and social issues.”
