Radicals

!e following pictographic drawings are taken from the 《說文解字》 (Shuō Wén Jiě Zì, Explanations of Simple Graphs and Analyses of Composite Graphs) the classic graphic dictionary completed around 100ad (during the Eastern Han dy-nasty). Each entry in the Radicals and Numbers sections below is presented first with its Type, then the Chinese character, then the Pinyin, followed by the original pictograph, and finally its gloss as provided throughout the textbook. Entries for compound characters for Lessons 1-11 provide a deconstruction of the components that go into the character formation generally based on more familiar modern elements. Where a component provides a phonetic clue to the pronunciation of a character, the Pinyin is provided (partial clues are partially underlined).
