Masoneilan's V-LOG trim technology utilizes a 3 dimensional torturous path flowdesigns that control pressure reduction through the management of the

process fluid's energy level. This is accomplished via channeling thefluid through discrete flow paths that are designed with multiplestages; each consisting of 90 degree turns along withintermediate contractions and expansions.

This patented flow geometrycreates a series of kinetic energylosses, followed by partial energyrecoveries at each stage. This grad-ual letdown process is highly effective fornoise attenuation (per the internationally acceptedIEC method, 60534-8-3) by allowing a stepdown reduction in the fluids pres-sure.

Upon exiting the V-LOG trim, the gaseous fluid is passed through exhaust channels that are designed to distrib-ute the flow into discrete flow jets. Without this critical separation, the re-converging jets will reduce the soundwave's peak frequency, resulting in acoustical excitation on the downstream pipe and higher sound pressure levelsoutside of the piping.

The torturous path of the V-LOG creates additional friction that is ideal for slowing the trim velocity and assisting in the gradualenergy reduction. Further, each stage of the V-LOG trim is design with an expanded flow area, which is essential for managingthe fluid's velocity that would otherwise increase with the change in pressure. The trim velocity control is important for maintaininglower aerodynamic noise levels within the valve body. This is an important feature for reducing vibration at the valve outlet thatcould otherwise excite the surrounding piping and potentially damage downstream equipment.

V-LOG Features

The required precision for an optimized throttlingprocess is obtained by using laser cutting to maintain

tight tolerances and smooth surfaces on each V-LOGdisk. The laser cut disks are then stacked and brazedtogether in a vacuum process to secure solid bondingand assure throttling area integrity.

Each plate in the V-LOG trim is laser cut with the idealflow channel configuration to obtain thedesired controllability. The V-LOG stack canutilize several variations of laser cut diskswith in each stack to obtain the desired char-acteristic across the entire range of travel. Forexample, the stack design may be characterized toprovide a high resistant flow path (up to 40 stages) at thelow lift range of operation, and a reduced amount ofresistance as the valve further opens to its full capacity.This design feature offers high rangeability with excellentcontrol, ideal for applications that use the control valve tothrottle the process during plant start-up, while the plantbuilds up to full load production.

DAs gases experience large reductions in

pressure, the volume of the fluid expandsas the molecules now have less surroundingpressure to hold them together. Thisprocess can result in high outlet velocity ifthe downstream piping does not take theexpansion into the design consideration.Masoneilan offers angle body valves withexpanded outlet areas to manage thisexpansion, thus minimize the overallsystem noise generation.

Capabilities: LNG

V-LOG technology can be applied across the entire Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) process. From the gas produc-tion and receiving stage, through the compression and processing stages, the V-LOG technology is critical in

keeping the plants under stable and continuous operation.

As LNG train comes on-line, it is necessary to achieve a stable and controllable level of gas flow prior to pass-ing the gas into the separators, strippers, compressors, and any other critical process. The gas flow is passed

through a vent-to-flare valve until the unit reaches the desired level.

The Masoneilan 72000 series is available with single or double stage Lo-dB trim, as well as the V-LOG trim forhigh pressure drop applications. These valves are all available with a number of different instrument packages

to meet various specifications, including fast stroke of 1 second or less, or precision control within 1/10,000th ofan inch.

ate as close as possible to their surge curves. Thesmaller this operation gap becomes, the more risk isinvolved in the application to maintain system stability.The responsibility to provide a reliable and accuratesystem and ensure the compressor is adequatelyprotected falls on the supplier of the surge controlvalves.

Today, more of an emphasis than ever is placed oncombining these compressor recycle and compressoranti-surge functions into one single valve.

to provide the demands presented by these applica-tions.

The reliability of the Masoneilan compressor anti-surge package is essential for any LNG plant's

operation. The V-LOG trim will Manage the Energylevel as the fluid's pressure is drastically reducedacross as many as 40 stages. This all takes place asthe valve opens in less than 1 second.

Capabilities: Gas Production

V-LOG technology can be found in severe service applications throughout the Oil& Gas Industry. The applications are often subject to extremely erosive

services, thus require careful design and selection of the trim, specifically thematerials. Many hardened materials, including full tungsten carbide trim inextreme cases, are used to provide a rugged finish on critical surfaces toprovided extended protection against entrained particles traveling withinthe gaseous flow stream.

Wellhead choke applications are often anideal installation to apply the V-LOG tech-

nology. These valves are API rated anddesigned with enlarged and expanding floworifices to prevent blockage caused from

loose debris picked up from the insidethe well. The labyrinth trim, tungstencarbide V-LOG plates further extendthe operational life of the trim due to

their rugged nature and extremehardness of the material.

Capabilities: Gas Storage

Gas delivery companies can quickly run out of capacity during peak seasons due to chokes in production. Inpreparation for these situations, gas companies often stock pile reservoirs of compressed gas in underground

salt caverns, mines, aquifers, depleted reservoirs, and other natural storage facilities.

This storage process involves heating andcompressing pipeline gas in order to deliver it to the

storage area. This process is regulated using controlvalves; however, standard products present a high riskof failure due to the formation of hydrates that canblock small flow passages. To prevent this icing forma-tion, gas companies must invest in large andexpensive heaters to elevate and maintain the gastemperature about the hydrate level.

Multi-stage V-LOG technology can be used in placeof the standard control valves to letdown the pres-

sure gradually, across a smooth and controlledprocess. This gradual letdown path will allow the gas tomaintain temperature above the hydrate level, withoutthe assistance of additional heaters.

DWhen peak season arrives, the storage mines must

be drained to return the gas to the pipelines fordistribution. The V-Log design is capable of bi-direc-tional operation, which is required for the withdrawal ofthe gas from the storage area. The trim is character-ized to effectively manage both of these operations,thus introducing savings on the overall number ofvalves, and control schemes required. During the non-peak season, the fluid travels through the valve with ahigh pressure drop and low Cv to fill the storage area.Thus the V-LOG trim is characterized at low lift opera-tion. As the gas is later withdrawnfrom storage, if flows with asmall pressure drop and avery large Cv. This opera-tion is managed via adrilled hole or portedcage across the highrange of the trim.

Capabilities: Power Generation

Many traditional power plants have been constructed using available, and perhaps outdated technology forsevere service applications. Single stage and double stage drilled holes designs have been used, and now

are providing unacceptable levels of noise, vibrations, and damage to the surrounding structures.

Today, the technology has advance and severe service valves designed using V-LOG areeasing noise and vibration in the most demanding steam applications.

Similar to the gas to flare application, the vent-to-atmosphere valves presenta high-pressure letdown application that is not suitable for standard single

stage trim. Masoneilan solves this challenge by providing a V-LOG valve inseries with a vent silencer.

The Masoneilan 72000 series valve is fabricated to meet the demands of thisapplication.

DThere are several high pressure steam applications in every power plant, but Masoneilan selectively applies the

high-end V-LOG technology where it is absolutely required. Soot blower and Auxiliary steam applications aretwo examples where V-LOG may be applied, as determined by the pressure drop ratio. However, Masoneilanbelieves in providing the best fit solution, which often means providing a simpler solution and saving our customermoney whenever it is practical.

The Masoneilan 41000 series and SE-20 globe valves are designed to meet the demands of this application.
