Safety - Deanna Filipski

Q U E E N C I T Y C A L L E R

I hope every enjoyed Cheektowaga Police Sargent Nathan Frank’s presentation at our February dinner meeting.

His discussion of situational awareness and communication tips was very informative. We will be making a dona-

tion in Sargent Frank’s name to the Parkinson Foundation of WNY.

March is eye safety month. An article by Lyn Wagner in Wellness Junction offers the following eye safety tips.

With so many people using computers at work and at home, complaints of eye strain, difficulty focusing and dis-

comfort have become commonplace in doctors’ offices.

One of the main reasons for this is; although offices have marched into the age of technology, not much else has.

People are still using the same lighting, furniture and desk configurations they had when using typewriters.

To mark March as Workplace Eye Safety Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has put together

some tips to help us alleviate some of the eye problems modern technology has given birth to. They are:

Get an eye exam by your ophthalmologist, who can rule out the possibility of eye disease as the cause of your

symptoms.

Screen distance: you should sit approximately 20 inches from the computer monitor, a little further than you

would for reading distance, with the top of the screen at or below eye level

Equipment: choose a monitor that tilts or swivels, and has both contrast and brightness controls;

Furniture: an adjustable chair is best;

Lighting: modify your lighting to eliminate reflections or glare. And

Rest breaks: take periodic rest breaks, and try to blink often to keep your eyes from drying out.

Another thing to remember is that the forced-air heating systems in big office buildings can increase problems

with dry eyes during the winter months. The usual symptoms of dry eye are stinging or burning eyes, scratchiness,

a feeling that there’s something in the eye, excessive tearing or difficulty wearing contact lenses.

Over-the-counter eye drops, called artificial tears, usually help, but if dry eye persists, see your eye doctor for an

evaluation.

Deanna Filipski

theme with the Olaf craft bags for patients to make. It was a wonderful event the children loved and thank you to every-

one that participated! Thank you to everyone that donated boots and additional items for the Buffalo City Mission’s Boot

Drive! It was wonderful to see, especially on such short notice!

March 13th is Associates Night! Invite your employers and associates to proudly show them what Insurance Women of

We haven’t found out yet where the 2019 Convention is being held and hoping to find out soon so we can get our

for our Annual Fundraiser on Sunday, May 20th @ Kotecki’s in West Seneca. The price for the brunch is going to

stay at $30.00 pp. We are looking at adding a few items to the menu.

Bev Cotter and Rebecca Heim are taking care of the admission tickets and program. JoAnn Decker and Wendy

Clemens are taking care of the Baskets of Cheer! The large tickets items price value will be $150.00 and up. It is

very important that you let us know the value of your baskets when you give them to us so we can place them at the

right tables. We are looking for baskets from everyone and if you have items but can’t put a basket together give

them to me and we’ll do it for you…. Jean Young is putting the Lottery Tree together again this year, if you’d like to

donate tickets or money towards the tree please let Jean know. Laura Nosbisch is taking care of the centerpieces and

we are once again getting the geraniums from the WNY Ovarian Cancer Project.

All volunteers are welcome, we’ll need people at the door selling tickets, running baskets, etc. so please join in the

fun. We are in the process of putting advance tickets together so you may start selling or let us know how many

you’ll need and we’ll get them to you once they’re ready.

I want to thank all of the Insurance Women of Buffalo for their generous support for our annual fundraiser and every-

thing that we ask of you. We do have a lot of fun though.

I have tentatively put a meeting on the calendar for Wednesday, March 21st at 5:30, place to be determined. We can

CPIA - The American Insurance Marketing and Sales Society's Certified Professional Insurance Agent designation is first-

of-its kind, hands-on, how-to training. The Insurance Success Seminars are designed to enhance the ability of producers,

sales sup-port staff and company personnel to efficiently create and distribute comprehensive insurance programs. Partic-

ipants leave with ideas that will produce results immediately. The workshops are engaging right from the start. You will

work with fellow insurance professionals and learn by actually working on real-life issues. Together, you'll create practical

solutions that you can implement as soon as you get back to your office. And because you learn by doing, not by just

listening, you'll remember - and be able to use - much more of what is covered in class. The three parts of the CPIA des-

ignation will teach you how to build and deliver effective insurance programs, broaden your organization's market reach

and deliver customer service that drives increased retention. You will leave with expanded technical knowledge, practical

ways to reduce E&O exposures and a greater confidence in your ability to serve today's customers with what they want

and more.

Other insurance professionals have described this program as "practical", "motivating" and "immediately useful". We

think you will agree! CPIA program practical benefits:

• CE approved;

• Beneficial for ALL insurance personnel;

• Register for one, two, or all three programs - no exam to take;

• Learn how to work effectively with different personality types;

• Learn how to properly analyze customers' needs;

• Get tips for preventing errors and omissions: The CPIA designation is approved by Utica National Insurance for E&O

Loss prevention credit. This credit is applied once the designation is achieved. Call PIA's E&O department for details.

• Earn CE credits. Each course is worth 7 CE credits (see below).

Students are encouraged to complete the sessions in consecutive order, but it is not mandatory to do so. See the AIMs

Society's FAQ for more information. The CPIA E&O designation is approved for E&O loss prevention credit by Utica

Mutual.
