WHAT IS AN INSTRUMENT?

Instrumentation is defined as the art and science of measurement and control of process variables within a production, or manufacturing area.

INSTRUMENTATION

A world without Instruments is like going back to the Stone age. Today we find Instruments at Home & work place, and this was possible only because of the science instrumentation.

“It is a multi-disciplinary stream and covers subjects from various branches such as chemical, mechanical, electrical, electronics and computers”

Instrumentation engineering is a specialized branch of electrical and electronic engineering and it deals with measurement, control and automation of processes.

SCOPES OF INSTRUMENTATION

Almost all process and manufacturing industry such as STEEL, OIL, PETROCHEMICAL, POWER and DEFENCE PRODUCTION will have a separate instrumentation department, which is manned and managed by instrumentation engineers.

SCOPES OF INSTRUMENTATION

All Manufacturing industry such as steel, oil, petrochemical, power and Defence production with instrumentation department is manned and managed by instrumentation engineers.

Automation is the core job of instrumentation engineers. Hence, the demand for instrumentation will always be there.

Growth in the avionics, aeronautical and space science sectors has also increased the scope for instrumentation engineers.

Instrumentation engineers can also fit in both software and hardware sectors

The demand is so high that every student finds at least two jobs waiting in the wings, by the time he or she completes the course

SIMPLE EXAMPLES OF INSTRUMENTATION

A very simple example of an instrumentation system is a Mechanical thermostat – Eg: Refrigerator, Toaster, Microwave Oven

Another example of an instrumentation system is a Home security system.

Modern automobiles have complex instrumentation

"Steam gages" converted air pressures into needle deflections that could be interpreted as altitude and airspeed. A magnetic compass provided a sense of direction.
