• Make a fist with one hand and clasp your other hand over it around the victim’s stomach below therib cage

• Thrust the victim’s stomach (or chest, if appropriate)until the object is expelled OR the victim becomesunresponsive

• Make a seal with your mouth over the victim’s

mouth

STEP 3:

• Deliver 2 breaths slowly into victim’s mouth 

NOTE: Make sure the breaths are 2 seconds long and

allow complete exhalation between breaths. Youshould feel the air go in and watch the victim’s chestrise

• If breaths do not go in, reposition victim’s head andtry again

• If the breaths do not go in, there may be an objectblocking it

• Continue to give breaths, 1 breath ever 5 seconds

(10 to 12 per minute) until victim is breathing byhis/her self

• STEP 1: If you did not witness the victim’s collapse,shake the victim vigorously and loudlyshout, “Are you okay?” 

STEP 2: Send someone to call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELYand retrieve an AED (Automated ExternalDefibrillator).

• NOTE: These are the AED locations: Library, ChurchHall Building, Olmsted Building, Capital UnionBuilding and the Susquehanna Building.

•  STEP 3: Open the victim’s AIRWAY.

• Place one hand on the victim’s forehead and theother hand underneath the victim’s chin and tilt thehead up to open up the airway.

• Look, Listen and Feel for breathing (see pictureunder previous section “If a person is NOTBREATHING”).

STEP 4: Check for BREATHING.

• If not breathing, give 2 slow rescue breaths over 2 seconds eachthat make the victim’s chest rise. 

• NOTE: The AED bag may have a mask for you to use to give thebreaths.

• NOTE: If you do not feel comfortable doing mouth to mouth, justdo chest compressions. It is better to do just compressions than todo nothing at all to give the victim a chance!!!

• If the breaths don’t go in, try repositioning the head and tryagain.

• If the victim is breathing adequately, place in a Recovery Position(the victim may vomit). Continue to monitor breathing.

• Stay with the victim until Emergency Personnel Arrives.

• STEP 5: If the breaths go in and the victim is stillNOT BREATHING on his/her own:

• Place your hands on top of each other on thevictim’s sternum (breastbone) at the nipple line. 

• Interlock your fingers and lock your elbows.

• Start COMPRESSIONS (pushes) on the chest at arate of 100 pushes a minute (can sing to thetune of “Staying Alive” to maintain the correct

rate).•   Use your weight to compress the victim’s

chest.

• NOTE: PUSH HARD AND PUSH FAST!• Continue CPR for 2 minutes.• Compress the chest one third to one half

the depth of the chest. Let the chest fully

recoilbetween compressions. • NOTE: If another responder is there with you,

switch off with them as soon as you get tiredso you can provide strong compressions. 

• NOTE: You may hear the victim’s ribscracking. Do not be alarmed. Bones heal.

• Do 30 compressions to 2 breaths, REPEAT.

• CAUTION: Limit disruptions in the compressions untilthe AED arrives.

• Continue to do CPR for 2 minutes before checkingfor SIGNS OF CIRCULATION: Normal breathing,

coughing or movement, OR palpable carotid pulse• CAUTION: DO NOT attempt to feel for a pulse if you

are not confident in your skills to do so!

• If the victim is not breathing on his/her own andshow no signs of circulation, continue to do CPRuntil someone arrives to assist you, you are tooexhausted to continue, or Emergency Personnelarrive.

• Open the carrying case or the top of the

AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and

turn the power on (some devices will “power on” when you open the lid or case).

Attempting DefibrillationSTEP 2:• Attach electrode pads to the victim’s bare chest as indicated

in the picture.

• CAUTION: Do not use child size pads for adult victims.

• NOTE: If hairy chest: Peel the paper backing away from aspare electrode pads, attach the sticky side to the victimchest and rip it off quickly or use a razor in the AED bag toremove the hair.

STEP 5:• CLEAR the victim and ANALYZE

the rhythm. Press the ANALYZEbutton to start heart rhythm analysis.

• CAUTION: Do not touch the victim duringrhythm analysis as this can interfere with thereading. Follow the voice prompts

• Press the SHOCK button to deliver the

shock when and only whenthe AED signals a shock is indicatedand no one is touching the victim.

•  If “No Shock Indicated,” Leave the electrode pads

on the victim and continue 30 Chest Compressionsto 2 breaths for 1 minute. · 

• Press the ANALYZE button again — do not touch thevictim. Follow the voice prompts

STEP 6:• After up to 3 shocks or after any “No Shock 

Indicated” voice prompt, Check for Signs ofCirculation: spontaneous breathing coughing,movement, or a palpable carotid pulse.

STEP 7:• If there are no signs of circulation, and the AED says

“No Shock Indicated,” continue doing repeatedcycles of 30 Compressions to 2 breaths untilEmergency Personnel arrive on the scene, you are

too exhausted to continue, someone else takesover for you, or the victim begins breathing onhis/her own.
