2018-2019 Annual Report Summary

Responsible Conduct of Research Committee

The Committee met on October 17, 2018. Dr. Borenstein updated the committee that a Canvas site has been created for RCR Advisory Committee documents. In addition, Dr. Borenstein noted that Judy Willis has helped create a series of RCR Reports, which can be used for academic and compliance tracking. The RCR Reports enable PIs and department admins check status of those who need to complete RCR training. The committee discussed and approved an update to the language for the RCR Master’s Thesis Policy and to the RCR Doctoral Policy. The RCR Master’s Thesis Policy now omits the language referencing “effective Fall 2014”. The new wording is “The RCR Academic Policy for Master’s Thesis Students applies to all master’s students who register for thesis hours (courses numbered 7000)”. The updated wording for the RCR Doctoral Policy is “The RCR Academic Policy for Doctoral Students applies to all doctoral students” with the caveat that those students who have a catalog year prior to 2011-12 are exempt from the Doctoral Policy. The committee followed up on a previous discussion on potential RCR retraining, which is currently not required. The committee members were given access to a Demo of the CITI Refresher Course to allow for future discussions regarding whether to implement an RCR refresher training plan. Dr. Borenstein disclosed during the meeting that he had a consulting relationship with the CITI Program and as part of his COI management plan, he could not be involved in decisions regarding the use of CITI content (his consulting relationship with CITI ended in January 2019).

Degree ModificationDoctor of Philosophy with a major in Nuclear EngineeringDoctor of Philosophy with a major in Mechanical EngineeringThe requested change is to consolidate the two existing course numbers (ME 8011 and ME 8012) into a single new course number (ME 8014), retiring the two existing course numbers (ME 8011 and ME 8012). The reason for this request is to simplify and streamline the internal record keeping and the registration process for graduate students. Rather than registering for a seminar course twice, with 11 seminars for each course number – students would instead be able to register just once, with 22 seminars recorded. This makes the process less confusing and cumbersome for students, and reduces the administrative workload (by half) who have to process the course permit requests.
