Safety First

1. First and foremost, do not smoke in the vicin-ity of the materials being installed. Some ofthe products that may be used contain sol-vents. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)are available upon request from your localdistributor.

2. Please remember that these are commercialgrade products. Read the labels on eachproduct prior to using.

3. Always make sure any ladders being usedare securely tied off and take the time to beaware of the surrounding area when on aroof. When near the edge of a roof, alwayswork facing the edge, not with your back to it. Make sure power cords are positioned tominimize the chance of tripping over them.

4. Do not use open flames to accelerate thedrying of any products. These products mustair dry on their own.

Now that you’ve selected one of the best

Low-Slope Roofing Systems available

today, please take the time to read through

this installation handbook carefully before

beginning. The handbook is broken into

sections to help simplify the installation of

the Mule-Hide EPDM Roofing System.

5. Make sure that all nearby windows, doorsand air intakes are closed prior to workingwith solvent-based adhesives. The vaporsare heavier than air and will travel across theroof and down into openings beside, on, andunder the roof surface. When working withsolvent-based products, make sure solvent-resistant gloves are worn to protect handsand skin. Follow guidelines in the MSDSsheets for the product being used.

Material Storage

1. Keep all adhesives, sealants, primers andcleaning material away from all ignitionsources (i.e., fire, sparks, and flames).Maintain proper ventilation when storingmaterials in an enclosed area or building.

2. Always store materials in their original con-tainers as labeled by the manufacturer.Follow manufacturer’s directions for properprotection of materials prior to and duringinstallation.

3. Read all container labels for additional infor-mation on application and storage. Keep allcontainers tightly closed when not in use.

4. Dispose of materials and their containers inaccordance with local, state, and federalgovernment regulations.

General Precautions

1. The first rule of thumb is “Do not usepetroleum-based products such as roofcement or asphalt-based roof coatingswith the EPDM membrane or its acces-sories.” Asphalt-based products are notcompatible with EPDM products.

2. Make sure all surfaces where products willbe applied, such as tapes, adhesives, caulk, primer, or cleaners, are dry and free of dirtand debris. If any areas are cleaned withsoap of any type, rinse thoroughly. Driedsoap film will act as a release agent. Thesecond rule of thumb is “Do not install thenew EPDM Roofing System over wetmaterials.” All materials must be thorough-ly dry prior to installing the EPDM mem-brane.

3. Never work alone.

4. The EPDM membrane can become slipperywhen wet or if frost occurs on the roof sur-face.

5. Be careful when working in weather below50 degrees F since adhesives, primers, andcleaners will not dry as quickly as in ambienttemperatures with the sun shining. Whenusing solvent-based products, if condensa-tion begins to form on the surface, work mustbe halted until the weather warms sufficient-ly to evaporate the moisture. Adhesives willrequire a second coat if this occurs.

Page 3

Page 6: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

6. When using Mule-Hide’s Water BaseBonding Adhesive, the temperatureshould not drop below 45 degrees for 48hours after application. Do not let the WaterBase Bonding Adhesive freeze.

7. Do not attempt to thin any of the liquid prod-ucts. Keep the lids on when not actively inuse. Make sure all products are stored intheir original containers in a cool, dry area.

8. Be careful when installing fasteners throughthe deck. Make sure there are no wires, con-duit, or piping that may be penetrated wheninstalling the fasteners.

PRE-INSTALLATION INFORMATION

Getting Started

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:

1. Following is a list of power and hand toolsthat are typically needed to install an EPDMRoofing System:

a. Ladderb. Electrical extension cordsc. Heavy duty scissorsd. Hammer and plierse. Markers (crayon or pen)f. Clean ragsg. Measuring tapeh. 2-inch wide steel rolleri. Screw gun or drill with Phillips bits

j. Screw drivers (Phillips and Straight)k. Utility knife and bladesl. Caulking gunm. Chalk linen. Scotch-Brite® padso. 9-inch and 3-inch paint rollers and coversp. Tin snips and hack saw

2. It is strongly recommended that any old roof-ing system be removed to the deck. Thedeck should be inspected for water damage.Any wood showing signs of warpage or rot-ting should be removed and replaced withnew material. The new Mule-Hide EPDMRoofing System will be attached or adheredto the deck and is dependent on the deckbeing dry and in good, sound condition.Special tools may be rented from the localtool rental facility to aid with the tear-off ofthe old roof. It may be necessary to rent adumpster to dispose of the old roofing mate-rials.

3. Remember to check with the local buildinginspector for any required permits or generalrequirements necessary for the new roofingsystem to be in compliance with current localbuilding codes.

Roof Drainage

1. Long-term performance of any roofing sys-tem may be affected by ponding water.Ponding water is a condition where waterremains on the roof for more than 48 hoursafter a rain.

Page 5

Page 8: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

2. Mule-Hide recommends a minimum 1/4 inchper foot roof slope to assure proper drainageand to maintain the integrity of the new roof-ing system.

Decking Requirements

For most residential and small commercial roof-ing projects, wood is the most common deckmaterial. For the purpose of this manual, Mule-Hide will only address plywood and wood plankdecks. Should you encounter either a steel orconcrete deck, please contact Mule-Hide’sCustomer Support Line at 1-800-786-1492.

Insulation and Attachment

If adding insulation above the deck, prior toapplying the EPDM membrane, there are sever-al generic insulations available to choose fromthat are typically used with this type of roofingmembrane.

SHINGLES

OFF

ATER BASE

BONDING ADHESIVE

1. High Density Wood Fiberboard - This isthe most common product installed over wooddecks. While the insulating value is minimal, itprovides a smooth surface to adhere themembrane. It also provides a good barrier toprevent nails from backing out of the deck andpuncturing the membrane. There are twotypes of wood fiberboard. The type used withthe roofing application must be the high densi-ty version. It is available in thicknesses of 1/2-inch and 1-inch with sizes of 4’ x 4’ and 4’x 8’. Standard attachment is with 3-inch diam-eter metal insulation plates and #12 deck fas-teners at a rate of 1 fastener/plate for every 2square feet. For a 4’ x 4’ board this wouldequate to 8 fasteners and for a 4’ x 8’ board,16 fasteners/plates would be used. (seeIllustration “A”.)

2. Polyisocyanurate - This is a type of foamand probably the second most popular insu-lation used with single-ply membranes. Ithas a black felt facer on the top and bottomsides of the board. It is usually mechanical-ly attached to the roof deck with deck screwsand 3-inch diameter insulation plates. Theplates and fasteners are normally installed ata rate of 1 fastener/plate for every 2 squarefeet of roof surface. More simply stated, itwould require a minimum of 8fasteners/plates for an insulation board 4’ x4’ or 16 fasteners for an insulation board 4’ x8’. (see Illustration “A”.) This board is typical-ly a minimum of 1 inch thick. It is availableeither as flat stock or tapered.

3. Expanded Polystyrene (also known as

Page 7

Page 10: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

EPS) - This is also a type of foam, white incolor, that does not usually have a facer asdoes polyisocyanurate. This product is avail-able in various thicknesses and sizes, mosttypically 4’ x 4’ and 4’ x 8’. As this productdoes not have a facer, a layer of high densitymust be installed over top for fully adheredand mechanically attached applications. Forroofing applications, generally, a board ratedat a minimum 1-pound density is required. This product is available as either flat stock ortapered. Mechanical attachment of the insu-lation is the same as listed for high densitywood fiberboard as a layer of wood fiberboardis required over the EPS product.

4. Once a board has been selected, make surethe boards are protected from the weatheruntil the time of the installation. Any wetinsulation should be replaced prior to instal-lation.

5. All insulation should be fitted tightly togetherand mechanically attached to the roof deckas indicated above. Any gaps greater than1/4 inch wide should be filled with insulation.Multiple layers should have the joints of thesecond layer staggered from those of thefirst layer.

After installing the insulation, the procedures forthe application of the EPDM membrane and thedetails are the same whether insulation isinstalled or not.

Estimating Guidelines

The following information should be used todetermine the amount of materials needed foryour projects.

Membrane:

Measure the length and width of the area to becovered. Be sure to include any vertical walls orshingle tie-ins. Rule of Thumb: After meas-uring add 1 foot to the width and 1 foot to thelength. This will allow for any shrinkage ordrip edge terminations. Your distributor canthen suggest the proper size cut of membranefor your project.

Accessory Items:

3-inch Insulation Plates – If insulation will beneeded for the project, plan on 1 insulationplate for every 2 square feet.

2-inch Barbed Plates – Must be used to attachthe RMS Strip with Tape at the base of anywall, curb, or shingle tie-in. Plan on 1 plateper linear foot for the attachment of the RMSStrip with Tape.

INSTALLING THE ROOFING SYSTEM

Preparing the Deck

1. Once all the old roofing materials have beenremoved, inspect the deck carefully. Makesure all decking is solid, dry, tightly fitted andproperly secured to the joists. Any wet orwarped boards should be removed andreplaced with new material of like quality andtype.

2. Plywood and plank decks

a. Remove all debris and old roofingmaterials, and sweep the deck clean.

b. Thoroughly check the deck to make sure the planks or plywood sheets are properly secured. If the deck has been secured with nails, it is generally recommended

Page 14

Page 17: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

that a minimum layer of 1/2-inch thick, high density wood fiberboard be installedover the deck before adhering themembrane. It is not required, just arecommendation.

c. If adding insulation thicker than 1/2-inchhigh density wood fiberboard, it will benecessary to install a wood nailer aroundthe perimeter of the roof surface. Thewood nailer should be the same height asthe thickness of the insulation. If there areparapet walls or the roof abuts a wall, wood nailers are not required. Woodnailers are primarily installed to protect theinsulation and provide a hard material towhich the metal edging may be anchored.

RMS Strip with Tape

Prior to installing the EPDM sheet, Mule-Hide’s6-inch wide RMS Strip with Tape shall beinstalled at the base of any walls, parapet walls,

curbs, or shingle tie-ins. The RMS Strip is areinforced EPDM strip that has a 3-inch widebutyl tape laminated to one side. The pre-applied tape helps speed up and simplify theinstallation process.

1. The RMS Strip is laid tight to the base of thevertical surface, either a parapet wall, curb,or wall. Adjoining RMS Strips must bespaced a maximum of 1 inch apart. It is notnecessary to overlap the RMS Strips. TheRMS Strip is installed a minimum of 6 inchesfrom any inside or outside corner. The RMSStrip is installed with the tape facing up andaway from the base of the vertical surface. The RMS Strip is attached to the roof deckwith Mule-Hide Fasteners and 2-inch diame-ter Barbed Seam Plates. (see Illustration “B”.)

2. The 2-inch Barbed Seam Plates are posi-tioned 12 inches on center starting 1 inch infrom the end of the strip and approximately1/2 inch out from the base of the vertical sur-face. This will ensure that the tape strip is

attached in the right area. This will allow for3 inches of RMS Strip that will be continu-ously spliced to the field sheet. Do not putthe plates over the tape laminated to theRMS Strips. The 2-inch Barbed SeamPlates will be attached to the deck with theappropriate Mule-Hide Fasteners.

3. After the RMS Strips have been attached tothe roof deck, position the field sheet to allowenough membrane to flash the vertical sur-face to the point of termination. Once theEPDM sheet is adhered to the roof surface, the EPDM sheet is rolled back to expose theRMS Strip. The EPDM sheet is cleaned withMule-Hide Tape Primer, allowed to dry, andfolded back over the RMS Strip.

4. As the sheet is rolled over the tape, pull therelease liner off the tape. Let the sheet laydown on its own. Once in place, take the 2-inch steel roller and thoroughly roll the seam, first going across the seam with over lappingstrokes and then along the length of theseams.

Page 17

Illustration “B”

Page 20: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

Please remember that the EPDM sheet mustbe fully adhered to the substrate prior toseaming the sheet to the RMS Strip.

The EPDM Membrane

If the project is small and only one sheet of EPDMmembrane is needed, lay the membrane on the roofdeck (or insulation) and let the membrane relax forabout one-half hour. Once the membrane hasrelaxed, move the membrane into to its final posi-tion.

While the sheet is relaxing is a good time to getthe adhesive stirred and placed on the roof aswell as gathering up the tools needed to applythe adhesive. 9-inch wide roller handles androller covers should be used to apply andspread the adhesive. Using a broom handleattached to the paint roller will help speed up theapplication process.

1. Adhesive application a. After letting the sheet relax, fold the

membrane in half. Do not worry about thetalc on the sheet.

b. When applying the EPDM membrane overplywood, OSB or High Density WoodFiberboard, the best adhesive to use isMule-Hide’s Water Base BondingAdhesive.

c. Mule-Hide’s exclusive Water BaseBonding Adhesive may be used in a“single sided application” (on horizontalsurfaces only). In other words, the

Page 18

Page 21: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

adhesive is applied only to one surface (inmost cases, the substrate). Themembrane is immediately rolled into thewet adhesive and then broomed with anylon push broom to ensure the surfaceshave mated properly.

d. Typical application rates for adhering theEPDM membrane to a plywood or plankdeck is about 120 square feet per gallon. Application to high density woodfiberboard is about 100 to 120 square feetper gallon. This may vary due to theporosity of wood fiberboard being differentfrom manufacturer to manufacturer. TheWater Base Bonding Adhesive should notbe used on roof slopes greater than2 inches per foot. The membrane canslide underfoot while the adhesive is drying.

Note: This manual will cover the appli-cation of the Water Base BondingAdhesive. For instructions on the useof Single Seal Adhesive for horizontalsurfaces, contact Mule-Hide’sCustomer Support Line, 1-800-786-1492.

e. After the sheet has been folded in half, check to make sure the sheet is still alignedproperly.

f. Stir the Mule-Hide Water Base BondingAdhesive prior to application. Apply theadhesive starting at the fold and workingaway from the center. Using a 1/2-inchthick nap roller cover, apply a coat thick

Page 19

Page 22: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

enough to provide a uniform, whitesurface (about the thickness of a dime). Cover the substrate until it is white in colorand the grain of the plywood or the blacksurface of the insulation is no longervisible. The adhesive is similar inconsistency to a thick, latex paint. Do notleave any bare spots on the substrate.

g. Only coat as much substrate as you canlay membrane within 5 minutes ofapplying the adhesive. The key tosuccessful installation of the membrane isto lay the membrane into the Water BaseAdhesive as soon as possible. Do not letthe adhesive set and begin to flash off(dry). The Water Base Adhesive must be“wet” as the membrane is laid into theadhesive. If the Water Base Adhesivebegins to turn clear, add another coat ofadhesive to the substrate.

h. Continue this process working to the endof the roof. Once the membrane is laidinto the adhesive, broom the membranewith a stiff bristled nylon push broom.

i. Fold back the remaining half of the sheetand repeat this procedure to install thesecond half of the membrane.

j. Mule-Hide recommends periodicallychecking the adhesive application rate. Immediately after a sheet has beenbroomed, gently pull the sheet back 1 to 2feet and examine the surface of themembrane. A uniform coat of adhesive

Page 20

Page 23: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

should be visible on the surface of themembrane. This indicates that a sufficientamount of adhesive was applied and thesheet was rolled into the adhesive at theright time. Lack of adhesive on themembrane indicates either not enoughadhesive is being applied to the substrateor waiting too long to lay the membraneinto the adhesive. The porosity of thesubstrate or climatic conditions mayrequire a heavier coat of adhesive.

Seaming

When using more than one sheet of EPDM, thesheets must be attached together by a methodknown as seaming. (see Figure 3.) The most com-mon method today is with the use of In-SeamTapes and Tape Primer. In-Seam Tape is available3 inches wide and 100 feet long. The tapes have aclear plastic release liner to ease installation. UsingTapes shortens installation time, reduces work-manship problems due to inconsistent productapplication, allows for more accurate material take-offs, and reduces waste and disposal problems.Mule-Hide provides a Tape Primer that must beused when installing the In-Seam Tape.

1. When laying out the EPDM sheets, allow fora 3-inch wide overlap. Make sure the sheetsare lapped so that the membrane to the highside of the roof overlaps the membrane tothe lower side of the roof. This will allow waterto run over the seam and not into the seam -often referred to as “shingling the seams.”

Page 21

Page 24: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

2. After folding back the top sheet, prepare eachsurface of the seam by scrubbing, using a cir-cular motion, with Mule-Hide’s Tape Primerand either clean cotton rags or Scotch-Brite‚pads. The Scotch-Brite‚ pads are preferredfor the application of the Tape Primer.Remember to replace the pads or rags withnew ones once they become soiled.Remember: Both the underside of the topsheet and the topside of the bottom sheetmust be scrubbed with the Tape Primer.

3. Once the Tape Primer has dried, roll the topsheet back over the bottom sheet to allow forproper placement of the guide marks. Usinga marking pen or lumber crayon, place guidemarks on the bottom sheet approximately 1/2inch away from the edge of the top sheet. This will allow 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch of In-SeamTape to be exposed along the completedseam. Marks should be placed about every 3feet along the length of the seam. Do not usea chalk line or any type of marker that will con-taminate the Tape Primer and prevent the In-

Seam Tape from adhering to the membrane.

4. After marking the seam, fold back the topsheet. Unroll 2 to 3 feet of the In-Seam Tapeleaving the release paper in place. With theexposed side of the tape facing down, rollout the In-Seam Tape along the length of theseam aligning the edge of the release paperwith the guide marks. Using a 2-inch widesteel roller, roll the tape with overlappingstrokes along the entire length of the seam.If more than one roll or piece of tape is need-ed to complete the seam, the tape sectionsmust overlap a minimum of 1 inch.

5. Fold the top sheet back over the tape. Peelthe release paper off the tape at a 45-degreeangle, parallel with the roof surface, allowingthe top sheet to fall freely onto the exposedtape. Using light hand pressure, brush fromthe inside outward over the edge to removeany air pockets. Using a 2-inch wide steelroller, thoroughly roll perpendicular to thewidth of the tape the entire length of the seamusing overlapping strokes and then run theroller along the length of the seam. LapSealant is only required at the intersections offactory seams, where two pieces of tape over-lap within the seam, where two seams crosseach other and around flashing patches.

Vertical Parapet / Wall Flashings

and Details

After the EPDM membrane has been spliced tothe RMS Strip, the EPDM membrane must then

Page 23

Page 26: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

be bonded to the vertical surface with Mule-Hide’sSingle Seal Adhesive or Mule-Hide’s Water BaseBonding Adhesive. You must use these adhe-sives as a contact adhesive when adhering tovertical surfaces. When used as a contact adhe-sive, both surfaces to be bonded together must becoated the adhesive. (see Figure 4.)

1. Apply the adhesive by roller to the verticalsurface and then to the EPDM membrane.Since it is a contact adhesive, 100% cover-age of both the substrate and membrane isrequired. Depending on the porosity of thevertical surface, a heavier application on thevertical surface may be necessary.

and out to the ends. Do not try to work toomuch membrane at any one time or force orstretch the membrane as wrinkles mayoccur. The membrane will be rolled up to thepoint of termination or up and across the topof the parapet and turned down the outside.

4. Carefully broom or roll the vertical surface toensure secure contact of the membrane. If themembrane is not intended to completely coverthe vertical surface, Mule-Hide recommendsthe membrane should be run vertically, at leastwhere possible, a minimum 8 inches or aboveanticipated snow, water or ice levels.

5. Do not cover weep holes or thru-wall coun-terflashings. All vertical flashings must beterminated at the top of the flashing followingone of Mule-Hide’s details as outlined below.

Curb and Other Vertical Flashings

Flashing curbs and other similar features havingvertical surfaces is quite similar to flashing awall or a parapet wall. Mechanical attachmentat the base is required. This is accomplishedwith the installation of the RMS strips as shownin Figure 4.

The EPDM field sheet should be cut so that themembrane will turn up the vertical surfaces tothe point where it will be terminated. When cut-ting the EPDM membrane to go around a curb,it will be possible to cut the sheet so that theEPDM membrane can roll up two sides of thecurb (opposite each other). Two additional

Page 25

Page 28: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

pieces of membrane will have to be cut to do theremaining two sides. Cut the cured membraneto be used to flash the vertical surface to thesize needed, allowing for a minimum of 3 inchesout onto the field of the roof and 3 inches aroundeach corner. Mule-Hide requires all seams tobe a minimum of 3 inches wide.

1. Once the EPDM has been cut to fit aroundthe base of the curb, adhered to the roof sur-face, and seamed to the RMS Strips, use theSingle Seal Adhesive or Water BaseBonding Adhesive to adhere the EPDM tothe sides of the curb.

2. Apply adhesive to both the side of the curband to the EPDM. Allow the adhesive to dryuntil tacky to the touch but will not come offon your hand. Do not apply adhesive toareas that will be seamed together. Onlyapply the adhesive to the bare substrate andcorresponding membrane.

3. Roll the rubber up the two sides of the curband using a 2-inch wide steel roller, roll theEPDM tight to the curb to ensure properadhesion.

4. Take the two cut pieces for the remaining twosides and apply Tape Primer along the lengthof one side of each piece and across bothends. Also apply Tape Primer across thebase of the two sides of the curb without rub-ber turning the corner - about 3 to 4 inches.Apply Tape Primer to the vertical sides of thecurbs from the edge to 3 inches in from eachcorner. Allow to dry.

Page 26

Page 29: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

5. After the Tape Primer has dried, apply strips ofthe In-Seam Tape along the base of the curbextending about 1 inch past each corner.Install strips of In-Seam Tape vertically up thecorners on the adjoining sides. Roll thorough-ly with the steel roller. Remove the plasticrelease liner from the tape at the base of thecurb. Take and cut small pieces of the releaseliner and apply them over the In-Seam Tapethat protrudes past the corners. These will beremoved later.

6. Position the primed, cut the EPDM so it cov-ers the In-Seam Tape leaving about 1/8 inchof tape exposed along the edge. Thoroughlyroll the membrane with the steel roller.

7. Fold the membrane back and apply the adhe-sive to both the sheet and the curb and allowto dry until tacky to touch (about 10 to 15 min-utes). Do not apply adhesive to the endswhere Tape Primer was applied.

8. When the adhesive is ready, roll the mem-brane up the curb and use the steel roller toroll the entire side of the curb. Take the scis-sors and cut the membrane on a 45-degreeangle from the edge of the piece, about 3 inch-es up the curb, cutting down into the corner atthe base. Make a second cut across the bot-tom of the sheet cutting off the excess sheetextending past the corner. The cut should beflush with the corner leaving the tape extend-ing past the corners exposed. This will leavean “ear” of loose EPDM membrane extendingpast each corner. Remove the release linerfrom the vertical strips on each end of the curband turn the piece (ear) around the cornerpressing the sheet firmly onto the tape.

9. Remove the small pieces of release liner thatcover the ends of the tape. The membraneat the top of the curb can be nailed off withroofing nails spaced 4 to 6 inches apart.

10.The final step will be to install a Pre-CutCorner at the base of each corner of thecurb.

Outside Corners

The final step to sealing the curb is to flash the out-side corners. This is completed with Tape Primerand a 7-inch by 9-inch Pre-Cut Corner. It is allow-able to cut the Pre-Cut Corners in half for thisapplication. Each piece will then be 4-1/2 inchesby 7 inches. (see Figures 5-1, 5-2, and 5-3.)

1. Using the Tape Primer, clean and prime bothsides of the corner approximately 6 inches ineach direction from the corner. While the TapePrimer is drying, remove the blue poly film andthe release liner from the Pre-Cut Corner.

2. When the Tape Primer has dried, take the Pre-Cut Corner, fold in half, with the fold facingdown and the bare tape facing the curb andapply the corner to the vertical surface of thecurb so that it wraps each side of the cornerabout 3 inches. Press tightly in place.

3. Remove the remaining release paper andform the flange out onto the horizontal surfaceby starting in the middle. Gently stretch thematerial so that the flashing can turn downonto the roof sheet without wrinkling and pressinto place. There should be no bridging in thecorners or wrinkles. In colder weather, it maybe necessary to warm the Pre-Cut Corner witha hot air gun to soften the material to allow forforming.

Repeat the same procedure with each outsidecorner. After about two hours or at the end of theday, apply a bead of Lap Sealant to all flashingedges. Again, it is not necessary to trowel orfeather the Lap Sealant. Each corner should becompleted in this manner.

Inside Corners

When flashing vertical surfaces you may alsohave an inside corner to complete. Inside cor-ners may be completed using the full pieces ofthe Pre-Cut Corners. (see Figures 6-1, 6-2, 6-3,and 6-4.)

1. Using the Tape Primer, prime each side ofthe inside corner at least 12 inches in alldirections. While the Tape Primer is drying, remove the blue poly film and the releaseliner from half of the Pre-Cut Corner. Foldthe corner in half with the exposed tape fac-ing down.

Pre-Manufactured Pipe Boots

with Tape Ring

Pre-manufactured Pipe Boots are designed andtapered in such a way that one pipe boot size willfit pipes ranging from 1 inch to 6 inches in outsidediameter. The bottom of the flange of the boot hasa layer of pressure sensitive tape with a releaseliner that eliminates the need to use adhesive.Whether new construction, reroofing, or a recoverapplication, be sure to remove all existing pipeflashings of any type. (see Figure 7.)

1. To install a pipe boot, first fit the boot over thetop of the pipe to determine where to cut thetop. Using a pair of scissors cut the boot sothat the top fits snugly around the pipe.

2. Using Mule-Hide Tape Primer, thoroughlyclean the EPDM membrane around the pipe.Work the Tape Primer into the sheet with theScotch-Brite® pad.

3. When the Tape primer is dry, slide the bootdown the pipe. Remove the release linerfrom the tape and press the flange onto theEPDM. Carefully roll the boot flange with a2-inch steel roller to ensure positive contact.Fold the top of the boot down the pipe about1 inch.

4. Apply a bead of Water Cut-Off around thetop of the fold and turn the fold back up.Install a stainless steel clamp at the top ofthe boot and tighten the clamp compressingthe boot over the bead of Water Cut-Off.After a minimum of 2 hours or at the end ofthe day, the outside edge of the flangeshould be wiped with Tape Primer and aclean cloth to remove any dirt or talc. Tocomplete the detail, apply a continuous beadof Lap Sealant around the edge of the bootflange and the top edge of the bootonto the pipe. It is not necessary totrowel or feather the Lap Sealant.

Shingle Tie-In

When tying into an existing shingledroof, it is critical to remember that theEPDM membrane should extend upunder the shingles a minimum of 3courses or 18 inches. The followingprocedures should be strictly followedfor proper performance of both roofingsystems.

1. Carefully remove the bottom three coursesof shingles, including the starter strip andfelt. These materials will be replaced duringa later step.

2. If not done, install the RMS Strip with Tape atthe base of the angle change as shown. (seeFigure 8.)

3. Apply an even coat of Mule-Hide Single SealAdhesive or Mule-Hide Water Base BondingAdhesive up the roof deck to the top end ofthe third course of shingles and to the under-side of the EPDM membrane. Allow to dry, tacky to the touch. Carefully roll in theEPDM membrane and broom the membranein with a stiff bristle nylon push broom toensure the surfaces have mated properly.

4. Chalk a line on the EPDM membrane foraligning the starter strip. Place a 3/8-inchbead of Water Cut-Off or Urethane Sealantapproximately 2 inches to 3 inches abovethe chalk line and below the area where thenails will be driven to reinstall the starterstrip. This will act as a seal for any water orice backup. Reinstall the starter strip andshingles, running the nails through the WaterCut-Off.

Drip Edge (with All-Purpose Bar)

Once the EPDM membrane has been adhered tothe roof deck using Mule-Hide’s Water BaseBonding Adhesive, it must be secured at theedge of the roof. The most common method ofsecuring is to run the EPDM over the edge of theroof and terminate it on the vertical side of thefascia board using Mule-Hides’ All Purpose Bar,Fasteners, Lap Sealant, and Water Cut-Off.

1. Drape the EPDM membrane over the edgeof the roof, making sure you have a sufficientamount of membrane left to cover or attachthe All Purpose Bar. (See Figure 9)

2. Fold the membrane back over the roof deckand put a 3/8-inch bead of Water Cut-off orLap Sealant to the fascia board on a linealong the area where the All Purpose Bar willfinally be installed.

Page 36

Page 39: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

3. Roll the membrane back over the roof edgeand install the All Purpose Bar using Mule-Hide Fasteners every 6 inches. Make surethat the two round or radius points on the AllPurpose Bar are facing the fascia board. This will allow a lip for the lap caulk to beapplied in step #4.

4. Cut off any excess EPDM membrane show-ing under the All Purpose Bar and apply abead of Lap Caulk along the lip or top edgeof the All Purpose Bar.

Drip Edge (with 3-inch In-Seam Tape)

Sometimes the building owner may have a col-ored or decorative metal edging which they do notwant to have covered with the EPDM membraneand All Purpose Bar. In this situation you maywant to use an alternative method of securing themembrane directly to the metal drip edge.

1. Fully adhere the membrane to within 3-1/2inches from the outside edge of the metal.(See Figure 10) Carefully trim the mem-brane to approximately 1/2 inch from theedge of the metal. This will allow approxi-mately 1/4 inch of In-Seam Tape to beexposed eliminating the need for LapSealant.

2. Fold the EPDM membrane over to exposethe underside of the sheet. Using a Scotch-Brite® pad and Mule-Hide Tape Primer, scrub the EPDM membrane and the metal.Allow the Tape Primer to dry.

3. Apply the 3-inch In-Seam Tape tight to the edge of the metal leaving the release linerintact.

4. Roll the membrane back over the 3-inch In-Seam Tape. Starting at one end, remove therelease liner. Using light hand pressure,

If any areas are cleaned withsoap of any type, rinse thoroughly.soap film will act as a release agent. second rule of thumb is “Do not install thenew EPDM Roofing System over wetmaterials.” All materials must be thorough-ly dry prior to installing the EPDM mem-brane.

Whenusing solvent-based products, if condensation begins to form on the surface, work mustbe halted until the weather warms sufficiently to evaporate the moisture. Adhesives willrequire a second coat if this occurs.

Page 3

brush from the inside outward over the edgeto remove any air pockets or wrinkles. Usinga 2-inch wide steel roller, thoroughly roll per-pendicular to the width of the seam the entirelength of the seam using overlapping strokesand then run the roller perpendicular to thelength of the seam.

Vertical Wall Termination

For areas where the EPDM membrane will beterminated to the wall, Mule-Hide recom-mends the membrane be applied to the ver-tical surface a minimum of 8 inches high(where possible). A surface termination con-sists of the Mule-Hide All Purpose Bar, WaterCut-Off, Fasteners and either Lap Sealant ora good quality Urethane caulk.

1. The membrane is adhered to the wall withMule-Hide’s Single Seal or Water BaseBonding Adhesive (Remember, the adhesivemust be applied as a contact adhesive asmentioned in the section for Vertical Parapet/Wall Flashings).

2. Once the point where the membrane will beterminated is decided, chalk a line along thewall. Adhere the membrane to the wall leavingthe top 1 inch of wall surface below the chalk linefree of adhesive. Thoroughly broom or roll themembrane in place to ensure proper adhesion.

3. About 1/2 inch down from the chalk lineapply a heavy bead (3/8 inch diameter) ofWater Cut-Off parallel with the chalk line.Lightly press the membrane into the waterCut-Off to hold the membrane in place.

Page 39

Page 42: Installation Instructions - 1Mule-Hide Products - EPDM ... · this installation handbook carefully before beginning. ... the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) and meets all government

4. Position the All-Purpose Bar over the mem-brane with the two rounded edges of the barfacing the membrane. This will sandwich themembrane and caulk between the two edges.

5. Fasten the All Purpose Bar to the wall with theMule-Hide Fasteners spaced 6 inches on center.Trim off any excess membrane above the barand apply a bead of Lap Sealant or UrethaneCaulk along the top edge of the bar completingthe detail. This detail should only be used onshiplapped wood siding, brick, or masonry sur-faces. The EPDM sheet should be installedbehind any vinyl siding or vertical wood siding. All old roofing materials must be removed beforeadhering the membrane to the wall.
