INTRODUCTION

The Edelbrock Performer SeriesCarburetor is a smooth bore, gravityfed, carburetor, with a float operatedfuel valve, a variable venturi and athrottle stop screw for idle speedadjustment. The enricher is a lever orcable operated valve allowing fuel to bedrawn directly from the float bowl andenters the venturi directly behind theslide. This system WILL NOT cause theidle speed to increase when engaged.

The EPS venturi design increases airvelocity and air flow (CFM).The commontheory that a bigger carburetor is better,is not the case when it comes to theEPS. When a venturi is too big airvelocity is lost, which means the abilityto lift and atomize the fuel is lostcreating what is known as “flat spots”.Please, when choosing a venturi sizeuse the chart we have provided and if adifferent size is desired, contactEdelbrock for recommendations.

EDELBROCK DUAL CARBURETORKIT REQUIRE A CAMSHAFT WITHNO LESS THAN 240 DURATION ONBOTH INTAKE AND EXHAUST AND40 DEGREES OF OVERLAP. Failure touse an appropriate cam will result highmanifold vacuum making the throttlevery stiff.

Recommended venturi sizes are asfollows:

80-95” 34mm #863596-113” 38mm #8636114-up 40mm #8637

Important Note: Highly modifiedengines may require differentcombinations than listed above. In thesecases, please call Edelbrock forassistance.

Note: It is recommended a high-flow,non-vacuum operated petcock be usedwi th a l l dua l carb set-up

CARBURETOR OPERATION

Starting Procedure

The Edelbrock dual carburetor does nothave a conventional choke. Instead, afuel enrichment device is used forstarting. This device uses a separatefuel pick-up tube to enrichen themixture. This WILL NOT cause the idleto increase. The enricher is for startingpurposes only, continued use will causean excessively rich condition or fouledspark plugs.Cold Starts:

1.) Open Fuel Petcock.

NOTE: WHEN MOTORCYCLE IS NOTRUNNING, THE FUEL PETCOCK SHOULDALWAYS BE TURNED OFF TO PREVENTPOSSIBLE LEAKAGE.

CAUTION: Not Closing the Fuel PetcockMay Cause GASOLINE to LEAK PASTTHE NEEDLE AND SEAT and MAYFLOOD THE ENGINE, CAUSING DAMAGEAND CREATING A FIRE HAZARD.

NOTE: ENRICHER CAN BE ROTATEDEITHER DIRECTION AND SHOULD ONLYBE ROTATED TO THE 6:00 OR 12:00POSITION. (See figure 7).

Figure 7.

2.) Turn on ignition.

3.) Turn enrichener lever to 6:00 or12:00 position. Twist throttle two timesto activate accelerator pump. Withthrottle closed engage starter, if enginefails to fire, slightly open the throttleand continue engaging starter untilengine fires. Once the engine has firedreturn the enricher lever back to the9:00 position and warm to operatingtemperature by holding the throttle at1000-1200 RPM for 2 minutes or severalmiles.

HOT STARTS

1.) Open Fuel Petcock.

NOTE: WHEN MOTORCYCLE IS NOTRUNNING, THE FUEL PETCOCK SHOULDALWAYS BE TURNED OFF TO PREVENTPOSSIBLE LEAKAGE.

CAUTION: Not Closing the Fuel PetcockMay Cause GASOLINE to LEAK PASTTHE NEEDLE AND SEAT and MAYFLOOD THE ENGINE, CAUSING DAMAGEAND CREATING A FIRE HAZARD.

2.) Turn on ignition.

3.) With the throttle closed engagestarter.

4.) If engine fai ls to startimmediately, open throttle slightly andcontinue to kick or engage starter untilengine fires.

N O T E : FOR PROBLEMS WITHSTARTING SEE TROUBLESHOOTINGTIPS AT THE END OF THIS BOOKLET.

ADJUSTING CARBURETOR

NOTE : ALL MIXTURE OR NEEDLEADJUSTMENTS SHOULD BE DONEEVENLY.

IDLE ADJUSTMENT

The idle adjustment screw mechanicallyadjusts the idle by keeping the slideslightly open at idle. This will beaffected by adjustments made to theneedle adjuster upon tuning the low tomid range. The idle adjustment screw islocated on the cable wheel where thethrottle cables attach. (See figure 8)Edelbrock adjusts this screw to aposition that should allow the bike toidle upon initial start-up.

Figure 8.

1.) Start engine and warm forapproximately 2-3 minutes.

2.) Initially adjust to obtain 900-1000RPM by using the 9/64 hex wrenchprovided.

NOTE : IDLE SPEED WILL CHANGEWHEN ADJUSTMENTS ARE MADE TOTHE NEEDLE ADJUSTER. THIS WILLREQUIRE THE REPEAT OF STEPS ONE(1) AND TWO (2).

Mixture Adjustment (IDLE TOMIDRANGE, 800-2500 RPM)

All Edelbrock Performance Carburetorscome preset for use on a stock basedengine with a performance camshaft(240 degrees or better duration and 40degrees or better of over-lap) andperformance exhaust with baffles.Depending on the modifications thathave been made to your motorcycle aslight adjustment to the air/fuel mixturemay be necessary. Before attempting to tune yourEdelbrock carburetors, a change ofspark plugs is recommended. This willmake it a lot easier to tune and if youhaven’t done so in a while, this will alsogive you better performance.

Page 10: Installation and Tuning Instructions for Dual Carburetors Edelbrock

NOTE: IF LOW IDLE SPEED CANNOT BEOBTAINED OR THE ENRICHER HAS TOBE ON FOR ENGINE TO RUN, THIS ISAN INDICATION OF A LEAN CONDITIONIN THE IDLE TO MID-RANGE, ORPOSSIBLY AN AIR LEAK IN THE INTAKETRACT.

NOTE: IF BIKE IDLES, BUT HAS A HINTOF BLACK SMOKE, MAKE SURE THEENRICHER IS COMPLETELY OFF. IF THEENRICHER IS OFF AND THE SMOKEPERSISTS, THIS IS AN INDICATION,THAT A RICH CONDITION EXISTS INTHE IDLE TO MID-RANGE.

INITIAL RIDE

The motorcycle’s performance is usuallythe best way to tune the carburetor.Due to different grades of gasoline, gasoline additives and different ignitionsettings, plug readings may differ fromengine to engine.

1.) After completing the engine idleadjustment, it is now ready for aninitial test ride.

Ride motorcycle paying close attentionto the RPM ranges of 1000-2500. In thisRPM range things to watch for are:

Lean Condition

A.) Hard StartingB.) Lag in accelerationC.) Popping or back firing throughthe intake or exhaust on deceleration.D.) Erratic idle or won’t idle down to900-1000 RPM

NOTE: BEFORE ADJUSTING FOR THISCONDITION, CHECK FOR INTAKE ANDEXHAUST LEAKS. THESE LEAKS HAVESIMILAR SYMPTOMS.

Rich Condition

A.) Black smoke at idleB.) Lazy accelerationC.) Poor mileageD.) Poor low-rpm cruise

NOTE: BEFORE MAKING ADJUSTMENTFOR THIS CONDITION MAKE SUREENRICHER IS COMPLETELY OFF.

IDLE TO MID-RANGE AIR/FUELMIXTURE ADJUSTMENT

All idle to mid range adjustments aremade by rotating the center slot of theneedle adjuster right (Clockwise) torichen the mixture or Left (Counter-clockwise) to lean the mixture. Theseadjustments are referred to as “clicks”.Each click equals a 1/4 turn of thescrewdriver. The usable range isapproximately thirty (30) clicks from fullrich. Always adjust carburetors equally.Base setting for Edelbrock dualcarburetors is K-8 Needles @ 10 clicks.

N O T E : WE AT EDELBROCK HAVEFOUND THAT ADJUSTING THEMIXTURE TO A SLIGHTLY RICHCONDITION (SMALL AMOUNT OFBLACK SMOKE AT IDLE), THEN LEANTHE MIXTURE 2 CLICKS, GENERALLY ISA GOOD BASE TO FINE TUNE FROM.

C A U T I O N : WHEN MAKINGADJUSTMENTS TO NEEDLE ADJUSTER,DO NOT LOOSEN OUTER COLLAR AS ITMAY BACK OUT CAUSING ANEXCESSIVE RICH CONDITION ORPOSSIBLE DAMAGE TO THECARBURETOR.

N O T E : USE ONE OF THE THREEMETHODS DESCRIBED FOLLOWING.

Page 11: Installation and Tuning Instructions for Dual Carburetors Edelbrock

METHOD #1

1.) Using the 3/16 hex wrenchprovided, remove cap plugs from caps, located on top of the carburetor.

2.) Install Mixture Adjustment Tool(Included) into the cap plug hole, usinga 7/16 wrench. Snug slightly. With theengine off, open the throttle to the fullposition and lock it down, using thethumb lock on the underside of thethrottle housing.

WARNING! DO NOT OVER TIGHTENAS DAMAGE MAY OCCUR TO CAP.

3.) Make adjustment by pushing downand turning the red knob until itengages and some resistance is felt.Once resistance is felt DO NOT continuerotating knob. Now make adjustmentaccording to thefollowing:

TO MAKE RICHER 0-1/3 THROTTLE(MORE FUEL) Pushing down turn thered adjuster knob to the RIGHT(Clockwise) one (1) or two (2) clicksdepending on the severity of the leancondition.

N O T E : IF PROPER ADJUSTMENTCANNOT BE OBTAINED THROUGH THESTANDARD RANGE OF ADJUSTMENTSEE SECTION “NEEDLE SIZEADJUSTMENTS” LATER IN THISMANUAL.

TO MAKE LEANER 0-1/3 THROTTLE(LESS FUEL) Pushing down turn the redadjuster knob to the LEFT (Counter-Clockwise) one (1) or two (2) clicksdepending on the severity of the richcondition.

4.) Release red knob and throttlelockdown.

Evaluate performance and repeatprocess, if necessary.

METHOD #2

1.) Using the 3/16 hex wrenchprovided, remove cap plugs from caps, located on top of the carburetor.

2.) Locate the center slot of the needleadjuster, insert a 3/16” straightscrewdriver and make adjustment asfollows:

TO MAKE RICHER 0-1/3 THROTTLE(MORE FUEL) Turn center adjuster tothe RIGHT (Clockwise) one (1) or two(2) clicks depending on the severity ofthe lean condition.

NOTE: IF PROPER ADJUSTMENTCANNOT BE OBTAINED THROUGH THESTANDARD RANGE OF ADJUSTMENTSEE SECTION “NEEDLE SIZEADJUSTMENTS” LATER IN THISMANUAL.

TO MAKE LEANER 0-1/3 THROTTLE(LESS FUEL) Turn adjuster to the LEFT(Counter-Clockwise) one (1) or two (2)clicks depending on the severity of therich condition.

3.) Reinstall cap plug and tightencarefully.

4.) Evaluate performance and repeatprocess if necessary.

METHOD #3

1.) Using a 3/16” hex cordlessscrewdriver bit (not included) and a 1/4”wrench remove cap plugs.

2.) Open throttle to the full or wideopen position, Insert a 3/16” straightscrewdriver bit, aligning it in the center

Page 12: Installation and Tuning Instructions for Dual Carburetors Edelbrock

slot of the needle adjuster, makeadjustment as follows:

3.) Make adjustment:

TO MAKE RICHER 0-1/3 THROTTLE(MORE FUEL) Turn center adjuster tothe RIGHT (Clockwise) one (1) or two(2) clicks depending on the severity ofthe lean condition.

N O T E : IF PROPER ADJUSTMENTCANNOT BE OBTAINED THROUGH THESTANDARD RANGE OF ADJUSTMENTSEE SECTION “NEEDLE SIZEADJUSTMENTS” LATER IN THISMANUAL.

TO MAKE LEANER 0-1/3 THROTTLE(LESS FUEL) Turn adjuster to the LEFT(Counter-Clockwise) one (1) or two (2)clicks depending on the severity of therich condition.

4.) Re-install cap plugs and tightencarefully.5.) Close throttle6.) Evaluate performance and repeatprocess if necessary.

Mixture Adjustment (Mid-Range to FullThrottle 2500-6000 RPM)

This adjustment is made by removingthe slide and changing the needle. AllCarburetors come pre-jetted, with a K-8needle installed. We have also includedK-7 and K-9 needles. The higher thenumber the richer the needle, from 1/3to full throttle. A needle change may berequired for different enginecombinations.

Ride motorcycle paying close attentionto the RPM ranges of 2500-6000. In thisRPM range things to watch for are:

NOTE: CLOSE ATTENTION SHOULD BEPAID NOT TO OVER-REV THE ENGINE.MOST MOTORCYCLES HAVE A BUILT IN

REV LIMITER, WHICH ELIMINATES THEPOSSIBILITY OF THIS HAPPENING. AREV LIMITER CAN ALSO SOMETIMES BEMISTAKEN FOR A FLAT SPOT IN THEHIGHER RPM RANGES. DETERMINEWHETHER OR NOT THIS IS THE CASEBEFORE MAKING ADJUSTMENTS FORTHIS CONDITION.

WARNING: OVER-REVVING THEENGINE CAN CAUSE PERMANENTDAMAGE.

Lean Condition

A.) Will not rev over 4000-5000 RPMB.) Poor acceleration when throttle isrolled on from 4000 RPM

Rich Condition

A.) With throttle at full positionpower-band falls off, rotate throttle backand engine RPM’s come up andmotorcycle accelerates slightly.B.) Black smoke from exhaustC.) Lazy acceleration.

Adjustments

1.) Remove the three cap screwsfrom each carburetor and lift cap slightlyseparating the cap from the cablebracket. (see picture)2.) Remove screw attaching actuatorstrip to inside wheel using a T-10 Torxbit. See figure 9.

Figure 9.

Page 13: Installation and Tuning Instructions for Dual Carburetors Edelbrock

3.) Remove slide assemblies fromcarburetors.4.) Using a 3/16” stra ightscrewdriver start turning the center slotto the right (clockwise) counting clicksor 1/4 turns as you go. See figure 10.

Figure 10.

NO T E : THIS ALLOWS YOU TOREPOSITION THE NEW NEEDLE IN THESAME LOCATION FOR IDLE-MID RANGEADJUSTMENT. SOME ADJUSTMENT MAYNEED TO BE MADE TO THIS SETTINGAFTER MOTORCYCLE HAS BEEN TESTRIDDEN AGAIN.

5.) Using a large bladed straightscrewdriver remove needle adjusterassembly and needle from slide.

NOTE: TO MAKE RICHER 1/3-FULLTHROTTLE (MORE FUEL) Read numberlocated on the lower end of the needle. To make richer you would go to thenext number. EXAMPLE: The factoryinstalled needles are K-8’s, you wouldgo to K-9’s for a richer mixture.

NOTE: TO MAKE LEANER 1/3-FULLTHROTTLE (LESS FUEL) Read numberlocated on the lower end of the needle. To make leaner you would go to thenext lower number. EXAMPLE: Thefactory installed needles are K-8’s, youwould go to K-7’s for a leaner mixture.

6.) Place needle spring on desiredneedle with the small end towards

the head of the needle. Insertneedle with spring into the slide, aligning the notch on the needlewith groove in slide. Insert needleadjuster actuator pin aligning rollpin with groove in slide.

7.) Install needle adjuster assembly.See figure 11.

Figure 11.

NOTE: NEEDLE ADJUSTER MUST BECOMPLETELY TIGHTENED TOELIMINATE THE POSSIBILITY OF ITBACKING OUT DURING OPERATION. (ADROP OF LOCTITE 642 ABOVE THEFOUR CROSS-DRILLED HOLES ISRECOMMENDED.) IF THIS HAPPENS,THE MOTORCYCLE WILL BECOME VERYRICH AND WILL NOT RUN PROPERLY.

Page 14: Installation and Tuning Instructions for Dual Carburetors Edelbrock

8.) Using a 3/16 screwdriver rotatecenter needle adjuster (see figure 10)all the way to the right (clockwise) untilit stops. Rotate back left (counter-clockwise) to the first click. Now rotateleft (counter-clockwise) counting clicks(one (1) click equals a 1/4 turn), untilthe number acquired from step # 6 isreached.

NOTE : WHEN REINSTALLING CAP,ROTATE CABLE WHEEL BACK TO AVOIDCLAMPING THE CAP DOWN ON THEIDLE ADJUSTMENT SCREW. CLAMPINGDOWN ON THIS SCREW WILL CAUSEPERMANENT DAMAGE TO THECARBURETOR.

9.) When finished repeat steps 1-5 inreverse order.

Spark Plug Readings

1. If possible ride the motorcycle fora good distance to get a proper readingon the spark plugs. Never let motorcycleidle for a long period of time beforechecking spark plugs.

Examine and evaluate for the followingconditions:

Condition-Good Performance

Bike Performance: Smooth idle, Goodacceleration, Good fuel economy.

Plug Reading: Threaded metal areasurrounding the porcelain will have alittle dark discoloration. Porcelain areaof spark plug should be a light tan towhite color with no flaking.

Condition-Rich in the Low-MidRange

Bike Performance: There will be a hintof black smoke at idle, rough idle, poorfuel economy, fouled spark plugs.

Plug Reading: Threaded metal areasurrounding porcelain will be dark blackand very sooty.

Condition-Lean Low-Mid Range

Bike Performance: Won’t run withoutenricher turned on.

Plug Reading: NONE.

Condition-Rich Mid-Full Range

Bike Performance: Bike will fall off athigher RPM’s. A slight reduction ofthrottle will make motorcycle pick upand rev all the way out. Poor fueleconomy.

NOTE : Careful, sometimes the revlimiter is mistaken for this condition.

WARNING! OVER-REVVING THEMOTOR CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE!

Plug Reading: Porcelain area of sparkplug will be brown to dark black andsometimes sooty.

Condition-Lean Mid-Full Range

Bike Performance: Poor accelerationfrom half throttle to full throttle. Popsand stutters above half throttle.

Plug Reading: Porcelain will be whitewith small whisker-like protrusions.

WARNING! CONTINUED OPERATIONIN THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT INSERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE MOTOR!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Float Adjustment

1.) Remove carburetor.

2.) Remove four (4) float bowlsockethead cap screws from eachcarburetor body.

3.) Turn float bowls upside-downand measure float level as shown infigure 12.

Figure 12.

NOTE: FUEL LEVEL SHOULD RISE TOTHE MIDDLE OF THE NEEDLE ANDSEAT.

WARNING! GASOLINE IS EXTREMELYFLAMMABLE AND HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE,IT CAN ALSO BE VERY HARMFUL IFINHALED. DO NOT SMOKE ANDPERFORM INSTALLATION IN A WELLVENTILATED AREA. KEEP OPEN FLAMEOR SPARKS AWAY FROM GASOLINE ATALL TIMES.

4.) Float level adjustments are madeby carefully bending the small tablocated on the back of the float.

A.) Bending tab in raises float level.

B.) Bending tab out lowers floatlevel.

4.) Repeat step #3 after adjustmentshave been made.

6.) Repeat steps 1-2 in reverse order.

Accelerator Pump Adjustment

The new Edelbrock EPS Dual-Carb set-ups include and accelerator pump onthe inboard carburetor only. The pumpbypass screw located on the left side ofthe float bowl controls the amount offuel the pump will deliver to the venturiduring rapid throttle opening. Thebypass screw is factory set at 1 turn outfrom bottom. The further in the screwis set, the more fuel will be delivered. Itis recommended that the bypass screwbe set after the needles have been setto a desired position as the acceleratorpump works with the main fuel circuit. To adjust bypass screw loosen 5/16 nutand make adjustments to screw asshown in figure 12. It is recommendedadjustments be made in 1/8 turnincrements at a time. Tighten 5/16” nutwhen adjustments are final. When thepump bypass screw is properly set thereshould not be any hesitation in thethrottle response during rapid throttleopening. The accelerator pump mayalso be used to prime a cold motorbefore starting by pumping the throttlea couple of times. Figure 12.
