In order to operate the PROSCAN the following com-ponents are required.

X-ray cassettes and monitors are optional accesso-ries and not included in the content of a standard-set.

4.1 Imaging PlatesImaging plates are used as an exposure medium for X-rays instead of conventional X-ray films.

4.2 Protection SleevesFor working in ambient light, the protection sleeveprevents erasure of information stored on the imagingplate.

4.3 X-ray Cassettes (Accessory)For exposures it is necessary to have X-ray cassetteswithout strengthening foil. These are available as acces-sories at PROTEC®. The intensifying screen can sim-ply be removed from existing X-ray film cassettes.Only plastic cassettes should be used.

4.4 SoftwareSpecial acquisition software is necessary in conjunctionwith the PROSCAN. The standard-set includes the soft-ware CONAXX from PROTEC® . The use of alternativesoftware can lead to lower image quality or pictureloss. PROTEC® cannot guarantee function, imagequality or picture loss if an alternative software hasbeen used. Only software as approved by PROTEC®

may be used, and this must be able to process 16 bitgray shades.

4.5 Monitor (Accessory)Only monitors designed for digital X-rays having ahigher intensity of light and greater contrast as recom-mended by PROTEC® should be used. Strong roomlighting, direct sunlight and reflected light reduce thediagnostic quality of the X-ray images.

6. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

6.1 Description

PROSCAN is a modern, high-resolution scanner forimaging plates. It transforms the X-ray imageinformation stored on the imaging plate into a digitalimage signal.

The imaging plate is exposed to X-rays exactly as a nor-mal X-ray film. This is carried out in appropriate casset-tes in various formats.

Using the acquisition software CONAXX the readoutprocess of the PROSCAN is started. Then the imagingplate (inside the protection sleeve) is placed and adju-sted at the input slot of the plate transfer box.

If the green LED on the plate transfer box is on display, the imaging plate can manually be moved out of the pro-tection sleeve into the input slot.

As soon as the imaging plate has been put into correctposition it will be fed into the plate transfer box. Insidethe plate transfer box scanning of the imaging platetakes place, whereby a laser scans the image informa-tion and transmits this to the PC. Scanning progress isdisplayed in a small window on the monitor.

During the scanning of the imaging plate, the imagedetails will be stored in the memory of the PC. Remai-ning image information on the imaging plate will be dele-ted automatically after the scan process by light of highintensity using the integrated eraser unit. The internalcontrol of the eraser unit guarantees sufficient er-asing capacity. After scanning the imaging plate itselfstays fixed at the PROSCAN. From there the imagingplate can be removed and prepared for use inanother exposure. Careful handling of this imagestorage medium means that this imagingplate can be used several thousands of times.

Firstly, check that the imaging plate is neither dirty nordamaged. Damaged plates must never be reused. If theplate is in good condition, it is put first in the protectionsleeve and then into the cassette, which has to be clo-sed. Then the imaging plate can be positioned at the X-ray unit for a new exposure.

6.2 Function of Individual Elements

1. Imaging Plate with Protection Sleeve:

The imaging plate serves the same function as anX-ray film for X-ray exposures.

2. Protection Sleeve:

Inside this protection sleeve the imaging plate isplaced at the input slot of the imaging transfer box. This sleeve is a protection against daylight whichwould erase the exposure.

3. Cassette:

For X-ray the imaging plate (inside the protectionsleeve) is put into the cassette. At already existingconventional cassettes the intensifying screen hasto be removed. Only plastic cassettes should beused.

4. Input Slot:

The imaging plate is automatically pulled in throughthe input slot. The protection sleeve remains outsidethe slot.

5. Yellow LED:

If the yellow LED lights up, the PROSCAN is swit-ched on but not yet initiated.

If the yellow LED blinks there is no connection to thePC, or the data storage is full.

6. On/Off Switch:

The PROSCAN is switched on (or off) by pressingthe On/Off switch for 2 seconds.

7. Green LED:

The green LED shows whether the PROSCAN isready for operation.

8. Plate Transfer Box:

The transport mechanism is inside the plate transferbox.

9. Status LED:

On top of the input slot there are four status LEDs.They show, whether an imaging plate can be inser-ted for scanning.

LED green Imaging plate can be inserted.

LED yellow Imaging plate can not be inserted.

10. Light Shield:

The arc-shaped light shield fitting prevents the ad-mission of stray ambient light to the output slot onthe transport box.

11. Optical Scanner with integrated erasurefunction:

An optical scanner inside the unit reads the X-rayimage using a laser device and converts this into adigitised signal. The integrated erasure unit deletsremaining information from the imaging plate. Theimaging plate is then expelled through the output slotof the transfer box.

10. SET-UP

10.1 Operating Room• The PROSCAN may only be set up in closed, dry and

well-ventilated rooms.

It is vitally important that the PROSCANdoes not get dirty. See section 16.1Cleaning the PROSCAN.

• Room temperature in winter may not fall below+ 10°C (+50 °F) and in summer must not exceed+ 35°C (+95 °F).

• If the PROSCAN is taken from a cold environment tothe operating room, condensation development canoccur. Connect the PROSCAN to the voltage systemonly when the PROSCAN has reached roomtempera-ture and is completely dry.

• Installation in purpose-built rooms, such as wet roomsor heating rooms, is not permitted.

• Do not set up the PROSCAN in direct sunlight. If pos-sible, room lighting should be controlled by means ofa dimmer.

The PROSCAN is sensitive to stray light duringthe scanning phase of image processing. The-refore, the PROSCAN should be set up in adark room and free from direct sunlight (maxi-mum light intensity 1000 Lux). If this value isexceeded the software will detect it (see sec-tion 20. Troubleshooting).

Ideal results are reached with a set-up parallelto daylight windows.

• The set-up room should not be affected by any inter-ference (e.g. strong magnetic fields), this can lead toproblems with the PROSCAN. Also a set-up in thedirect path of rays from the X-ray device should beavoided.

• Enough space to the wall must be provided to avoiddamaging the imaging plates.

10.2 Set-up Possibility• PROSCAN is set up on a table. In order to avoid

errors in the scanning of image details, the PRO-SCAN must be protected from knocking or shaking.

10.3 Fitting the Light ShieldFor additional light protection the arc-shapedlight shield must be mounted at the output slotof the transport box .

• Clip the light shield strip into place (left and right).

Transport of the imaging plates at theoutlet must not be interfered.

14.1 Imaging Plates

• PROSCAN may only be used in combination withimaging plates as supplied by PROTEC®.

• Imaging plates have an active and a passive side. The active side is white. The passive side has ablack surface.

• Imaging plates are as flexible as X-ray films. Never-theless, handle with care. Do not bend, applypressure, scratch or allow them to get dirty.

• Protect from direct sunlight and ultraviolet light.

• Do not put imaging plates in the autoclave.

• Check the imaging plates for any signs of damage.

• Imaging plates must be replaced if there is any sign ofdamage (e.g. protective layer is damaged, or visiblescratches which could interfere with diagnosis).

• Work only with clean hands. Avoid soiling caused byoil and grease.

• The imaging plates may not get in contact with waterduring cleaning or simply through wet hands.

• During feeding only put pressure on the imaging plate, not on the protection sleeve.

• During feeding only put pressure forwards not down-wards.

• When you slide in the imaging plate into the protectionsleeve, do not bend it or allow it to get dirty.

• Protect edges from getting damaged.

• See also section 16.2. Cleaning.

Kindly note our "Tips for handling Imaging Platesand PROSCAN".

14.3 Storage

• Store the imaging plates always horizontally on a levelsurface to avoid deformations.

• Storage of imaging plates at max. 33°C (91°F).

• Do not store the imaging plates in hot and humidlocations.

• Store imaging plates in a dark place.

• Insert the imaging plates inside protection sleeves ofcorrect size and store them in the respective sleevesor X-ray cassettes.

If storing the plates in the X-ray room becareful not to allow the plates to be exposedto any light respectively X-rays from theequipment before use.

USE

14.4 Erasing Imaging Plates

After the scan process the imaging plates are dele-ted automatically.

Imaging plates not being used for a longertime (from approx. 7 days) should be erasedagain before use in order to prevent the platesfrom exposure by earth rays. For erasure an"empty" scan procedure with an unexposedimaging plate can be carried out. Thus theimaging plate will be erased automatically.

The imaging plates are flexible like X-rayfilms. However, take care when handlingthem. Do not bend, apply pressure, scratchor allow them to get dirty.

15. EXPOSURE AND SCANNING

15.1 Exposure

• Store the imaging plates always horizontally on a levelsurface to avoid deformations.

Only use cassettes without intensifying screen.Where a cassette has extra intensifying screen, this must be removed completely. The use of acassette with intensifying screen will lead to aloss of picture quality.

• Place the erased imaging plate into the protectionsleeve. The active side must be to the rear. Thepassive side will be facing (i.e. visible) (see fig. 14).

• Place the imging plate with the protection sleeve intothe film cassette of the X-ray device.

The active side of the imaging plate must befacing the closed side of the film cassette.

• Place the film cassette into the X-ray machine.

The closed side of the film cassette must befacing the X-ray tube.

• Set exposure time and settings on the radiographicequipment.

• Expose the imaging plate.

The image data on the imaging plate must bescanned into the PROSCAN within half anhour.

• Create a job by selecting the bodypart and the view-position.

• PROSCAN starts scanning after you have activatedthe job.

• Place the protection sleeve with the imaging plate atthe input slot on the image transfer box. Make sure itis placed accurately. The LEDs must be green.

• Move the imaging plate out of the protection sleeveinto the input slot until the imaging plate is drawn in bythe PROSCAN. The protection sleeve remains outsidethe input slot.

• Scan image data.

The PROSCAN draws the imaging plate automa-tically into the scanner. Scanning takes place au-tomatically. During scanning of the imaging plateall 4 status LEDs will be yellow. The protection sleeve may only be removed fromthe image transfer box when the main drivemotors and all 4 status LEDs have turned off (invery few cases they will be green).

• Move the imaging plate at the output side of thePROSCAN backwards, then remove it upwards.

The scanning process must be completelyfinished, before the imaging plate can beremoved.
