Before you Begin The System Requirements are:

Before beginning the installation of Pocket Inventory on your handheld it is required to download the required installation files from:

Installation of the Required Server Features and Roles
1. Select Start then right-click Computer and select Manage.
2. Select Features.
3. Select Add Features.
4. We will want to check .NET Framework 3.5.1 Features.

Installation of SQL 2008 Express
If you will be installing Pocket Inventory on the computer running Windows Server 2008 Standard then it
is REQUIRED to manually install SQL 2008 Express prior to the install of CRE using the correct files below:
32bit Operating System
SQL 2008 (32bit)

Note: If SQL was already installed some programs will need to be uninstalled. Please see:

Open the SQL 2008 Installation file by right-clicking it and
selecting Run as administrator.
1. Select New installation or add features to an existing
installation under the Installation section.

2. Select I accept the license terms.
3. Select Next.
4. Under Instance Features make sure that Database
Engine Services and SQL Server Replication are checked.
5. Under Shared Features make sure that SQL Client
Connectivity SDK is checked.
6. Select Next.
7. Select Named instance and enter PCAMERICA.
8. Select Next.

9. Select Use the same account for all SQL Server Services.
10. Use the drop-down to select NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.
11. Select OK.

13. Select Mixed Mode and enter pcAmer1ca in both fields.

Installation of the SQL Management Studio
If you will be installing Pocket Inventory on the computer running Windows Server 2008 Standard then it
is REQUIRED to manually install the SQL Management Studio prior to the install of CRE using the correct
files below:

Open the SQL 2008 Management Studio Installation file by
right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
1. When opening the downloaded file if you receive the
message (pictured left) then select Run Program.
2. Select Installation then select New SQL Server stand-
alone installation or add features to an existing
installation.

3. When the progress bar has completed the system check
you should see that no options have failed.
4. Select OK.
5. Select Install to install the Setup Support Files.
6. When the progress bar has completed the system check
you should see that no options have failed.
7. Select Next.

8. Select Perform a new installation of SQL Server 2008.
9. Select Next.

11. Select I accept the license terms.

Installing CRE/RPE
Insert the CRE/RPE CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Note: The Installer for CRE can be downloaded from:
For 32Bit installations

Open the CRE/RPE Installation file by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. 1. Before installing CRE/RPE the installer will scan for
Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 and Microsoft SQL Server Express which are prerequisites for the CRE/RPE install if they are not present you will get prompted. If you are prompted to install SQL 2008 then there may have been an issue with the installation, select Cancel and go to the Installation of SQL 2008 Express section of this guide.
2. Select Next.

3. After all prerequisites have been installed the CRE installer should automatically launch and bring you to the next step.
4. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement, then select Next.
5. Select Install to begin the installation.
6. After the install has completed select Finish to exit the wizard.

Configuration of CRE/RPE
1. Open CRE/RPE (icon should be located on the desktop).
2. Select Next to begin the configuration process. You will be asked a series of questions that will determine how your system is installed.

3. CRE/RPE will prompt you to select your industry type. Select A Corporate Office for a Chain of Stores or Restaurants ONLY IF this computer is an office computer in your corporate office (not an office computer in a restaurant). If this is a retail establishment, select A Retail Store. Otherwise, choose A Fine Dining Restaurant with Table Service or a Quick Service Restaurant with Counter Service depending on your type of restaurant.

4. The next screen in the wizard will be the Database Selection tab.
Select Configure This Computer to start a NEW database.
To try using one of the sample databases select Try Out a Sample Database.
Only select Use Advanced Configuration under the direction of technical support. To connect to your server please see the following document:

5. If Configure This Computer was selected you will need to answer a series of questions to help configure your system properly.
6. When done select Next.

Note: To setup a Store Server you will need to choose the
appropriate Store ID by highlighting it. In addition, you need to
select a Station ID. You will then need to specify the Station Role:
Standard – This is the most commonly used station role. This
station role will act as a normal cash register so that transactions
can be performed.
DriveThru – This role is used where a Drive Thru will be used. For

MobileDevice – This role is used to configure printer settings for a

Note: Every station MUST have a unique number.
7. After you have configured your system select either Begin or
Exit which will restart the program.

8. In order to gain access to your new software you must now
register it. Select the Register Now tab and scan or enter the
registration number that came with your software. You must
have an internet connection to register your software or call
your customer service representative to guide you through the
manual registration process.
9. Cash Register Express / Restaurant Pro Express will proceed to the Login Screen after a brief loading process.

Setting Up an Encryption Key
1. Select Yes when prompted to update your encryption
password.
2. Provide the administrator password and select OK.
3. Enter a secure, unique password and keep a record of
it in a safe place.
If you are setting up multiple stations in the
same store, use the same password on all
stations.

Installing and Configuring Windows Mobile Device Center
To install Windows Mobile Device Center either on a 32 bit or 64 bit environment, Internet
access is required.
The download for Windows Mobile Device Center can be downloaded from:

Open the Windows Mobile Device Center Installation file by right-clicking it and selecting Run as
administrator.
1. Connect the handheld to the cradle and then connect the
cradle with the device to the computer.
2. The drivers and Windows Mobile Device Center will then
automatically download and install on your computer.
3. Open the Start menu.
4. Select All Programs.
5. Select Windows Mobile Device Center.

6. Accept the license agreement.
7. Select Set up your device.
8. Uncheck all options on this page.

9. Enter a Device name and select Set Up.
10. Windows Mobile Device Center should now see the
device.

*NOTE* Your Handheld MUST be cradled and synchronized through Windows Mobile Device
Center in order to install this software.
1. Open the file named NetCFSetupv2.exe.
2. Select Next.
3. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement.
4. Select Next.

8. If prompted, select to install on the Device. Then select
Install.
If told that the compact framework already exists in ROM
select OK.
If prompted to restart the device select OK.
9. When finished select the OK box on the top right of the
screen.
When you are told to check your mobile device screen, select OK.
Select Finish.

Installation of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 Server Tools
*NOTE* Your Handheld MUST be cradled and synchronized through Windows Mobile Device
Center in order to install this software.
The operating system installed on your computer will determine
which file to select to install SQL Server Compact:
If your computer is in a 32 bit environment open SSCEServerTools_x86-ENU.msi.
If your computer is in a 64 bit environment open SSCEServerTools_x64-ENU.msi.
1. Select Next.
2. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement.
3. Select Next.

Make sure that all each Status = Success.
4. Select Next.
If you receive an error message that the SQL Server
requirement failed please see the section titled Pocket
Inventory Troubleshooting – SQL Server Requirement Failure
below.
5. Select Next.
6. Select Install.
7. After the installer has completed its operation select Finish.

SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 Configuration
1. Select Start.
2. Select All Programs.
3. Select Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5.
4. Select Configure Web Synchronization Wizard.
5. Select Do not show this starting page again.
6. Select Next.

7. Select SQL Server Compact.
8. Select Next.
9. Enter the name of the computer running IIS.
10. Select Create a new virtual directory.
11. Select the Web site in which to create the new virtual directory by selecting the local computer, then Web Sites, then Default Web Site
12. Select Next.
13. Enter pocketinventory for the Alias.
14. Select Next.
Note: If prompted to create the folder select Yes.
Note: If prompted to copy and register the SQL Server Compact
Server Agent, select Yes.

15. Check the box Do not require secure channel (SSL). Users will access your virtual directory through a URL string starting with http://.
16. Select Next.
17. Select Clients will connect anonymously. A user name and password will not be required.
18. Select Next.
19. Uncheck The Virtual directory will be used for SQL Server merge replication with a UNC snapshot share.
20. Select Next.
21. Select Finish.
22. Select Close.

In the PI_Install folder there are three pocket inventory install files. The operating system on
your handheld will determine which of these three files you will need to use.
If the desktop of the device you will be installing Pocket
Inventory on, looks like any of the screens pictured on this
page including:
Windows Mobile 6 Professional
Windows Mobile 6.1 Classic
Windows Mobile 6.5 (CE OS)
The PocketInventorySetupWM5 (1.2.1.25383).msi file will
need to be used for the installation of Pocket Inventory.

Inventory on, looks like the screen pictured left:
Windows CE 5.0 (WinCE5.0)
The PocketInventorySetupWinCE (v1.2.2.22391).msi file will
need to be used for the installation of Pocket Inventory.
If the desktop of the device you will be installing Pocket
Inventory on, looks like the screen pictured left:
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
The PocketInventorySetupPPC2003 (1.2.3.27858).msi file will
need to be used for the installation of Pocket Inventory.

the installer.
1. Select Next.
2. Select Next.

If when trying to install the application you receive error 2689 the following operations can be performed to resolve the issue:
1. Right click the application and select Run as administrator (if that option is not available then please see the next option).
2. Right click the application and select Troubleshoot Compatibility (if this does not fix the issue then see the next option).
3. Temporarily disable User Account Control (UAC).
Select Start, type user accounts, and select Enter.
o In Windows Vista - Select Turn User Account Control on or off and uncheck Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer, then select OK.
o In Windows 7 - Select Change User Account Control Settings and move the slider to Never Notify, then select OK.
4. For each component that will be installed including:
pcAmerica PocketInventory
Microsoftr SQL Client 2.0
SQLServerCompact 3.5 Core
SQLServerCompact 3.5 Repl
Symbol Managed Class Libraries
You may be prompted where to install the application,
select Device then select Install.
Note: If prompted that an application is installed select Yes to
re-install it.

When prompted that the install was successful select
OK on the Handheld.
5. After each of the aforementioned components are
installed you will receive a prompt to check your mobile
device, select OK.
6. Select Close.

Pocket Inventory Configuration - Remote Server Port
1. Select Start then select Administrative Tools and finally Computer Management.
2. Select Services and Applications.
3. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager.
4. Open SQL Server Network Configuration
5. Select Protocols for PCAMERICA.
6. Right click TCP/IP and select Properties.

7. Select the IP Addresses tab.
8. Under IPAll:
Remove any information for TCP Dynamic Port.
For TCP Port enter 32001.
9. Select Apply.
10. Select OK.
11. You may be prompted to restart the service to have the changes take effect.
12. Select OK.
To restart the service follow the directions below:
13. Select SQL Server Services (or SQL Server Services).
14. Right click SQL Server (PCAMERICA).
15. Select Restart.

Pocket Inventory Configuration - Setup
1. On the handheld, select Start.
2. Select Pocket Inventory.
Note: If you receive a message about the local database not
being created yet select OK.
Note: you may need to select Programs then select Pocket
Inventory if it is not displayed on the Start menu.
3. Select Menu then select Setup.
Note: If you receive a message about the local database not
being created yet select OK.

4. We need to check what is setup in CRE.
5. On the desktop PC open CRE/RPE.
6. From the login screen, select File then Database Maintenance and finally View Database Settings.
7. Enter you credentials.

*NOTE* The Remote Server Name, Remote Database Name,
User Name, and Password in the Main Computer Tab of Pocket
Inventory MUST be identical to the fields in the database
settings in Cash Register Express of the computer that Pocket
Inventory is connecting to.
8. On the handheld enter the following information:
Remote Server Name: - The name of the server computer (with the database).
Remote Server Port: - Enter 32001.
Remote Database Name: - The name of the database on the server computer.
User Name: - Enter the default sa.
Password: - Enter the default pcAmer1ca.
Note: These are the default settings and may not be correct in
each environment.
9. Select the Handheld tab.
10. Make any of the following selections:
Display UPC-A Check Digit
Display CODE-39 Check Digit
Drop First Barcode Digit
Beep On Scan
Speed Scan when Counting
Prompt eaches or cases
Auto-sync after ActiveSync finishes

11. Select the Other tab.
12. Make Sure the Store ID matches the store ID of your store. In most cases the Store ID will be entered as 1001.
13. Enter your Company Name.
14. Select the Departments tab.
15. Highlight the departments you would like to edit inventory from on the handheld then select the > (single arrow) pointing to Selected Departments to bring the departments over. To filter all of the Departments over select the >> (double arrows) pointing to Selected Departments.
16. When done filtering your departments select Options then select Save.

17. Select Menu then select Receive Changes from CRE.
*NOTE* When you click on Receive changes from CRE Pocket
Inventory will synchronize with the Cash Register Express
Database for the first time.
18. When synchronization has completed you will be asked to login.
Note: Employee permissions will need to be configured to
access pocket inventory, for more information on configuring
employee permissions please see the following document

Now that CRE is synced with your handheld, be sure to select the appropriate handheld type (Windows
Mobile / Pocket PC) on Page 2 of the Hardware tab of Setup Screen. This will ensure that Inventory Track
Express works correctly.

Pocket Inventory Troubleshooting - ISAPI and CGI Restrictions
1. On your computer, select Start.
2. Select Administrative Tools.
3. Select Computer Management.
4. Select the arrow to the left of Services and Applications to expand it and then select Internet Information Services.
5. Select the arrow to the left of (Your computer Name) and then to Sites to expand them.
6. Select the arrow to the left of Default Web Site to expand it and then select pocketinventory.
7. On the right tab select Advanced Settings...

8. Under General select Classic .NET AppPool for the Application
Pool (if it is available).
9. Select OK.
10. Under Connections select (Your Computer Name).
11. Select ISAPI and CGI Restrictions.

12. Under Actions, select Add...
13. Under ISAPI or CGI Path enter:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1\sync\SQL\pocketinventory\sqlcesa30.dll
14. Under description, enter SQL Server for PI.
15. Make sure that the Allow extension path to execute option is checked.
16. Select OK.
17. Close the Computer Management window.

After determining that the required components of SQL Server are not installed we will need to do a
backup of the CRE/RPE database then uninstall and reinstall SQL Server with the replication components.
1. Open CRE/RPE.
2. Select File then Database Maintenance and finally select
Backup Database.
3. Enter your credentials and select OK.
4. Select the location to save the backup to.
5. Enter the file name (it is recommended to use the date),
and select Save.
6. Select OK.
7. Exit CRE/RPE.

8. On your computer, select Start.
9. Select Control Panel.
10. Select either Uninstall a program or Programs and Features.
We will then need to uninstall any items listed here that are related to the installation of Microsoft SQL Server. Please the image
above for references to what needs to be uninstalled.
