When I graduated from Ernest Manning High School, I never imagined that many years later my education experience

would inspire me to become the volunteer chair of Calgary’s Public Education Trust. Early in 2011, I accepted the challenge of

leading EducationMatters into the next decade of growth and change. It was an easy decision for me since I believe public

education is the foundation for building great communities across Canada and beyond. Calgary’s diversity is its strength, and

our ability to live together peacefully, leading productive and fulfilling lives, is thanks in part to our educational opportunities

that welcome students from every culture and walk of life regardless of circumstance. Over the past year, I have met countless

people who, like me, are alumni of Canada’s world class public education system. Collectively, the Calgary community has

so much to gain by supporting public education students to become lifelong learners and the future advocates for public

education.

I am inspired by the support and encouragement EducationMatters continues to receive from the Calgary Board of Education.

Thank you for enabling us to work with you to ensure all children and youth succeed at school. The Board of Governors’

volunteer efforts surpassed all expectations this year and I am grateful for your commitment of time and talent to ensuring

that the future looks bright for CBE students. Thanks to the extraordinary support from a diverse group of donors, this year we

exceeded our goals. Your community spirit and generosity inspire us to achieve more.

In 2011, the mantra of the EducationMatters staff team and board was “together we achieve more” as we worked toward doubling our granting capacity, building new scholarships and increasing support for CBE students. Early in 2011, we were

fortunate to move with the CBE to new headquarters that still inspire us every day. By mid-year, it was clear that this would be

a record year for leadership and transformational donations in support of innovative personalized learning for CBE students.

Since inception, we have exceeded our goals by passing the $7 million fundraising milestone and tripling our granting

capacity, thanks to the incredible generosity of donors.

It is a privilege to serve CBE students and play a leading role in engaging the community in supporting student success. As I

reflect on the many accomplishments of EducationMatters in 2011, of highest importance was supporting the CBE in achieving

their ultimate goal – to help our children and youth develop and pursue their passions, while making the successful transition

to adulthood by becoming lifelong learners contributing to the world.

Chris Akkerman School

Two weeks before the grant application was due, the dedicated teachers at Chris Akkerman School were huddled around knee-high tables working into the night to complete the school’s grant submission.

The hard work paid off when the Heather and N. Murray Edwards Literacy Fund at EducationMatters provided the school with an amount astonishing to the teachers - $25,000. “I thought maybe we would get a couple of thousand. When I heard it was $25,000 I almost started bawling,” said teacher, Darlene Rosin.

Joan Murtagh, Assistant Principal, said the school used the money to purchase 3,000 new books and supplies to mark the book levels.

The excitement was contagious when the announcement was made to the school community as everyone visualized the benefits so many new books – fiction, non-fiction, poetry and letters – would provide. “The students are passionate about their books,” said Darlene Rosin and she proved that when she leafed through the students’ responses to what books they liked best – all of them!

Some of the school’s “favourite” books had become “too well loved” to keep in circulation. The teachers repurposed the worn materials by using the images to inspire fantastic writing. Replacement books are needed and treasured. It was clear that the teachers and the students were ecstatic about their new resources.

For many students at Chris Akkerman School, English is their second language and the books help them better understand western culture as well as provide an opportunity to hear and see well-written language. The grant provides families the ability to read and learn together.

discovering choices youth council inspiring through leadership

From the excited faces and camaraderie at the St. Patty’s Fun Day, it’s hard to imagine that three years ago such an event wouldn’t have happened at Discovering Choices School. Youth Central began the Youth Council at Discovering Choices in 2009. A grant from EducationMatters in 2011 has allowed the council to continue to grow and the difference it has made is amazing.

“That would never ever happen [before],” commented Shawna as two students embraced in a victory hug after competing in the last activity of the afternoon. To Shawna, the whole atmosphere of the school has changed, especially the relationship between students and teachers, “We can all sit in the same room and have fun.”Outreach programs at the CBE, like Discovering Choices, help students overcome obstacles in completing their high school diploma. The school offers curriculum courses and work experience opportunities and even with the flexible pace, some students still have difficulties attending and completing school.

Shawna has participated in the Discovering Choices Youth Council since its beginning and says that it is her reason to come to school. “I hated walking into this school. Period,” said Shawna, but things have changed for her and the other members. Shawna’s journey with the Youth Council began when a teacher first approached Shawna’s friend. Her friend was hesitant, but with Shawna’s encouragement, both girls joined. Smiling at the memory, she added that Council involvement helped her friend successfully complete her high school education that year. Shawna herself has benefited from the Council, which has helped her with public speaking and building her confidence.

Youth Central is an organization focused on giving youth a voice, providing opportunities to volunteer and develop leadership skills. Sylvia Galica began the leadership council at three of the Discovering Choices locations. “It brings students together,” noted Sylvia, adding that many friendships are formed because of the council. Youth council members gain confidence and leadership qualities as they engage in various community projects such as the Children’s Festival and undertake fundraising initiatives to raise money for small causes.

Youth Central, with support from EducationMatters, facilitates a leadership council at Discovering Choices Schools where youth have committed themselves to making their schools a better place and engaging in community service projects around the city.

Michelle Creighton receiving the 8th annual Hopewell Scholarship

Michelle Creighton is one engaged first-year University of Calgary student as she pursues a double major in Business Process Management and Criminal Sociology, on top of her evening shifts at her part-time job.

“I remember how hard it was for me, being 18 and having all these things I needed to do, but wasn’t able to. I want to be in a position where I can help people and make a difference because there have been a lot of people who have helped me,” Michelle commented.

It’s because of her hardworking, positive and friendly attributes that Michelle was awarded the 2011 Hopewell Scholarship and a Marguerite Patricia P. Bannister Memorial Degree Award at The Calgary Foundation. “I was shocked when I received the notification, especially for the Hopewell Scholarship because they pick only one person per year,” said Michelle with a small smile at the memory.

The Hopewell Scholarship requires applicants to write an essay on “The Role of Today’s Youth in Meeting Future Business Leadership Needs” and include a comment on a non-political business-leader role model; Michelle wrote about her music teacher, which was a daring choice. Michelle says of her choice, “I talked about my high school music teacher because he’s such an amazing person. He’s done a lot for the music community and created programs and events that are special. I talked about him because he’s really impacted me a lot.”

For Michelle, the scholarships were the support she needed to pursue her academic dreams. Without them, she says, she would have delayed her studies for at least a year to work and save for tuition.

Michelle receives renewable awards of $4,000 for the next three years from the Marguerite Patricia P. Bannister Memorial Degree Award and $5,700, also renewable, from the Hopewell Scholarship with the added advantage of a summer employment opportunity with Hopewell.

inspiring beyond the classroom“It brings textbooks to life.” That’s how Trish Savill, Education Coordinator at the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), describes the Campus Calgary/Open Minds program. “It’s about engagement and giving students the opportunity to pursue activities and topics that are important to them.”

Each year, the Calgary Board of Education, in collaboration with Calgary Catholic School District and corporate Calgary, gives students the opportunity to go beyond the classroom walls and spend a week-long learning experience in one of Calgary’s iconic venues, such as the Calgary Stampede, Aero Space Museum of Calgary, City Hall and the CBE Education Centre. The programs largest supporter is Chevron, who has sponsored the Chevron Open Minds program for nineteen years. Beginning with a single site at the Calgary Zoo, Open Minds has expanded to include the TELUS Spark Centre and Glenbow Museum.

The overwhelming success of the community classrooms has Campus Calgary/Open Minds operating at full capacity; unfortunately, 116 classes (3,400 students) in 2011 were unable to participate due to a lack of space and resources. Recognizing the need for expansion, Chevron generously donated $150,000 in 2011 allowing Campus Calgary/Open Minds to lay the foundation for growth.

“Education is one of the areas we fund; it is the base from which so much more in the community can grow. The Open Minds program fits very well into that area and we consistently get great feedback from the sites, the teachers and the kids,” says Chris Lough, Chevron Senior Advisor, Stakeholder Engagement. “It [Open Minds] brings learning back to the basics. Students are exposed to new things in a very hands-on and inquisitive way and then have to think about it and journal their thoughts.”

The impact of the Campus Calgary/Open Minds program is most evident in the participation of the students. “I see the engagement,” says Savill, “I see students that don’t normally put their hand up or volunteer in their regular classroom getting involved. I think that this program is a pretty phenomenal way to be involved in future generations of students. The students we have now are the citizens of the future who will be making decisions.”

Campus Calgary/Open Minds

The Campus Calgary/Open Minds Program would not happen without the generous support of companies like Chevron, who donated $150,000 in addition to their individual support in 2011.

2011 CBE Distinguished Alumni Awards

Our alumni have a long and distinguished history of making our city, country and world a better place. In 2001, the Board of

Trustees of the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) established the Distinguished Alumni Award to formally acknowledge public

education alumni who are exceptional role models in our community and beyond. In 2006, EducationMatters was honoured

to take the lead on this award and expand it into an evening celebration to pay tribute to these inspirational leaders and to

build sustainable support for the Future Leaders Fund.

The 2011 event was held on October 26. Pearl Tsang, of CTV Calgary, and Matt Bell, a student from the Dr. E.P. Scarlett High

School journalism program, led the evening festivities as some 265 guests enjoyed the celebration and the musical talents

of the Lester B. Pearson High School Jazz Quartet. Joining the guests at each table were student ambassadors from Dr. E.P.

Scarlett, Juno Beach Academy of Canadian Studies and Western Canada high schools. It was truly an evening for guests of all

ages to remember.

Peter Valentine accepted the award on behalf of his late wife, Peggy, a graduate of Western Canada High School. Peggy

Valentine, a true distinguished alumnus, was an inspired educator and leader in our community. She touched many lives

through her roles at the CBE, Calgary Olympic Development Association, University of Calgary, United Way of Calgary, Calgary

Stampede Foundation, Alberta Blue Cross and Right to Play.

A distinguished and inspirational graduate of Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School, retired Master Corporal Paul Franklin’s experience

and injuries in Afghanistan motivated him to co-launch the Northern Alberta Amputee Program to improve the care and

lives of amputees. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of “Canada’s Heroes.” Paul continues to inspire others as he helps

wounded soldiers through the Peer Visitation program.

The evening supported the EducationMatters Future Leaders Fund, which provides opportunities for CBE students to develop

their leadership skills. As evidence that citizenship, integrity, compassion and leadership are important learning elements for

our students, Xiao Tian (Tim) He, a recipient of a Future Leaders Award, noted: “to foster the growth of responsible, productive

and useful individuals, education must go further than academics simply because life has a lot more to offer than the

established curriculum.”
