WELCOME

We would like to extend a very warm welcome to you, our friends, as we enter our 10th season. This is a special year for all of us – the board, our advisors, our donors, our audience, and our community. This is a milestone that you have fashioned; a “work of art” that each of you have helped to create. You have added your flare, your special brush strokes, and your influence by sharing your life with us and by allowing us to be a part of your life. You have given support, been involved, given encouragement and feedback, counseled, attended concerts, cheered, and shared in the dream of making something wonderful happen in the White Lake area through great music!

This year’s Festival is our masterpiece for 2019, presented to you, our audience. May you find the gems, the inspiration, the excitement, and the passion within these pages and performances. May they transform your life, your outlook, your zeal, and make your “todays” better than your yesterdays. We consider it an honor to serve you and to bring great music to the White Lake area. This year’s masterpiece is filled with brushstrokes from you, our audience; it is our donors, our WLMS Board, our volunteers, area businesses, in-kind donations, and the generosity of many that makes all of this happen. We are grateful to all!

Sincerely,Sondra Cross, DirectorRobert Swan, Artistic DirectorThe White Lake Music Society Board

HISTORY - WHITE LAKE MUSIC SOCIETY

In 2005, a newly formed Chamber Music Society was organized by local amateur musicians who were passionate about creating opportunities for local musicians to perform and share their talents and love of music. In 2006, they partnered with the Arts Council of White Lake and came under their umbrella of oversight and management. From 2006 – 2017, the music branch of the ACWL, with the oversight of an advisory board, created and administered multiple programs and initiatives.

In August of 2017, the board of the music branch spread their wings and pursued their own non-profit status. They continue to administer and grow existing programming: The West Michigan Junior Strings, the White Lake Chamber Music Festival, the White Lake Lecture series, the Swan Series and Collegiate Ensemble Concerts, the College-Age Young Adults Solo Competition, and partnerships with other area arts organizations and businesses.

Avalon String Quartet Returns as the White Lake Chamber Music Festival’s Quartet-in-Residence. Described by the Chicago Tribune as “an ensemble that invites you — ears, mind, and spirit — into its music”

The Avalon has performed in major venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd St Y, Merkin Hall, and Bargemusic in New York; the Library of Congress and National Gallery of Art in Washington DC; Wigmore Hall in London; and Herculessaal in Munich. Other performances include appearances at the Bath International Music Festival,

Aldeburgh Festival, Caramoor, La Jolla Chamber Music Society, NPR’s St. Paul Sunday, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Dame Myra Hess Concerts, Los Angeles Music Guild, and the Ravinia Festival. The quartet performs an annual concert series in historic Fullerton Hall at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it has presented the complete quartet cycles of Beethoven, Bartok, and Brahms in recent seasons.

The Avalon is quartet-in-residence at the Northern Illinois University School of Music, a position formerly held by the Vermeer Quartet. Additional teaching activities have included the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute, Interlochen Advanced Quartet Program, Madeline Island Music Camp, and the Britten-Pears School in England, as well as masterclasses at universities and conservatories throughout the United States. Additionally, they have given numerous performances and presentations to young audiences in under-resourced schools and communities.

The Buswell - Ou Duo:James Buswell, violinCarol Ou, cello

“James Buswell is a persuasive advocate, combining muscle, mellowness and musicality." Daily Telegraph review of James Buswell playing Walter Piston's Violin Concertos Nos 1 and 2 for Naxos American Classics.

Since his solo debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of seven, he has appeared with most of the major orchestras in the U.S. and abroad and also with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, George Szell, William Steinberg, Leonard Slatkin, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, Erich Leinsdorf, Seiji Ozawa and Michael Tilson Thomas.

Buswell studied at the Juilliard School, where he was a pupil of Ivan Galamian, and at Harvard University, where his major field of study was Renaissance Art. For more than a decade he was a professor of violin and conductor at the Indiana University School of Music. His instrument is a Leveque Stradivarius of 1720.

A versatile artist, cellist Carol Ou is known for her “fiery, marvelous” and “meltingly melodic outpourings” (Boston Globe).

She has recorded three of the most beloved cello concerti by Haydn, Tchaikovsky, and Elgar and premiered Hsiao Tyzen’s Cello Concerto in Taipei. Current recording projects include a CD of 20th century violin and cello duos and a CD set of Reza Vali’s solo cello, duo, and string quartet works. A Yale

graduate, Carol has taught at the New England Conservatory of Music, Yale, and MIT. Her recording of Walter Piston’s Chamber Music won the 2001 Best Chamber Music CD award from Chamber Music America.

Ou has collaborated with celebrated artists such as Midori, Hillary Hahn, Kim Kashkashian, Timothy Eddy, Pascal Rogé, András Schiff, Raul Juarena, and Jayme Stone.

Anthony Devroye, viola

Anthony Devroye has been violist of the Avalon String Quartet since 2004. Mr. Devroye is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Michael Tree and Roberto Diaz; and holds a B.A. in Biological Science from Columbia University, where he pursued concurrent viola studies at The Juilliard School under Toby Appel, Heidi Castleman and Misha Amory. Prior to joining the quartet, he held a two-year fellowship with the New World Symphony.

In addition to his numerous performances with the Avalon Quartet, Mr. Devroye is an occasional guest with the Chicago Symphony (with whom he has toured the United States, Europe and Mexico under Riccardo Muti), Chicago Chamber Musicians, and Grant Park Music Festival. His recitals, chamber music performances and commentary have been regularly featured on WFMT radio, and he has appeared as concerto soloist with the Illinois Philharmonic and Kishwaukee Symphony. In 2014 he became Artistic Director of Rush Hour Concerts in Chicago, an organization that promotes open access to world-class chamber music through free concerts and educational initiatives. Mr. Devroye is an Associate Professor in the School of Music at Northern Illinois University.

Maria Hoover, cello

Marina Hoover studied cello under David Soyer at the Curtis Institute of Music and earned a Master’s degree at Yale University under Aldo Parisot. A two-time Grammy nominee, Ms. Hoover was the founding cellist of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, which rocketed to international prominence after winning both Young Concert Artists Auditions and the Banff International String Quartet Competition. In her 13 years with the St. Lawrence, Ms. Hoover performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 92nd Street Y, the Kennedy Center (for the Emperor of Japan). In addition, the quartet made regular appearances at Tanglewood, the Newport Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, as well as over one thousand appearances throughout North and South America, Europe, Japan, Australia, and Vietnam. Don Baily, flute

Don Bailey has recorded for Summit, Genuin, Parnassus, and Albany Records. In its review of his debut CD Voyage, American Record Guide praised his “impeccably controlled sound… full of artful colors and nuances…exceptional attention to detail…unfailing precision”. Fanfare said his Tribute CD was “…a delight from beginning to end… Bailey boasts a brilliant technique and a bristling sense of excitement.”

A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Don began his career in Dallas, Texas, where he performed with the Dallas Chamber

and Bach Orchestras and Voices of Change. He is a former university professor, board member of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra and New York Flute Club, and past president of the Texas and Louisiana Flute Societies. Following a 20-year residency in New York City, he is once again based in Dallas.

Working closely with legendary composer Gian Carlo Menotti at his home in Scotland, Don compiled a chronology of the composer’s works. As Menotti’s guest at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, he co-curated and performed on the Concerti di Mezzogiorno and Umbria Segreta chamber music concerts, sharing the stage with the Attacca Quartet and celebrated pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, among others.

Michael Carrera, cello

Associate Professor of Music at Ohio University, cellist Michael Carrera has performed in some of the world’s greatest concert halls as a chamber musician, concert soloist, and recitalist. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2001 to great critical acclaim. He has played at Town Hall in New York City, Wigmore Hall in London, at the Rheingau Festival in Germany, and many other festivals in the United States and across Europe.
