What do you want to do?

“You will only answer the problem you are trying to solve”

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I wish:

“It is all very well going very fast, but it won’t make any difference if you’re

heading in the wrong direction””

Build capability: Personal Experiments in 20/40 Vision

Daily to do -

• It would be cool if…?

• I am inspired by…?

• A trend I spotted today…?

• New route I’ve taken to work/coffee machine/etc….?

• 1 thing said/done that I don’t agree with…?

• A new things I did that aren’t meant for me…. E.g. visit games arcade, get a facial, drive a truck…

• Learn something new: go to a lecture/download one on a topic you’ve never heard of…

• Talk to someone random (for at least 10mins)

• Map someone else doing something e.g. shop

• Find a crazy idea

Build capability: Organisational Experiments in 20/40 Vision

To do 1. Have lunch with someone

you don’t know 2. Take your team out… for a

walk, for shopping, for a bus ride, for a tourist visit, for a child experience

3. Play music first thing 4. Have a children's problem-

solver competition 5. Re-write your job

description as an explorer, astronaut or artist

To reflect

• How could I use this insight to think differently about my organisation?

• What would this mean for my customers?

• New challenge?

Angela’s Challenge

Angela’s challenge

HERA encourages individuals who have been trafficked to become entrepreneurs.

“We want to communicate our success story beyond London, and thus open up opportunities to deliver our project in other ‘destination cities’ like New York.”

Discover – greet and welcome every idea

1. Judge later – not now. Quantity of ideas, not quality! Crazy is good!

2. Listen to others –‘what does that make me think of?’

3. Listen to your ‘unofficial thoughts’ and questions

4. Build on their idea - creating together

5. Assume friendly intentions

6. Write headlines – 1 line only – ‘I wish/how to’

Imagine you are a

Builder Cook Doctor ????

Think:

• Where do you work – what is it like?

• What tools do you use?

• When do you work?

• What do you try to achieve?

• Who else do you work with?

Now – how would a Cook approach the challenge?

Page 21: Inspiration, Innovation and Impact Series Part 2

Design – start by selecting

• Criteria?

• Who does the selecting? – Team commitment to outcome vs efficiency and direction

• How many ideas to select?

5/14/2012 www.6-heads.com 21

Page 22: Inspiration, Innovation and Impact Series Part 2

Design – group the ideas into themes

• You decide which ideas belong together.

• You don’t need to proceed with all the themes you find.

• Work on them one-by-one, or in smaller groups

• Turn each theme you want to work on into a ‘How to’ question.

5/14/2012 www.6-heads.com 22

Page 23: Inspiration, Innovation and Impact Series Part 2

Angela’s challenge - Themes

• Celebrities

• Clubs/groups

• New communications channels

• Direct action

5/14/2012 www.6-heads.com 23

Page 24: Inspiration, Innovation and Impact Series Part 2

Angela’s first theme to work on: ‘new communications channels’

• Use social media

• Create a community on the web

• Film women telling their stories and create a documentary

• how to make a viral video

• I wish other senses than sight were used to communicate

• I wish HERA was available in any language - even Martian

• How to ….. make HERA go viral on Facebook globally?

Page 25: Inspiration, Innovation and Impact Series Part 2

Design – practical problem solving

How to ……? What are 3 benefits of doing this? 1. …. 2. …. 3. …. What are the barriers to getting this done? • …. • …. • …. • …. Overcoming the barriers: What You Do Is…… (WYDIs) WYDI….. WYDI….. WYDI….. WYDI….. WYDI….. WYDI….. WYDI….. WYDI…..

Page 26: Inspiration, Innovation and Impact Series Part 2

How to make HERA go viral on Facebook globally?

• 3 benefits of doing this

– We could start work in more than one city at the same time. – We could find willing, able people to start and run HERA programmes themselves, with our help. – We could attract the attention of women who want to join our programme.

• Barriers – Lots of competition for attention – Our subject is not interesting to everyone – Some people find our subject complicated or unpleasant – Not all our success stories want to be publicised. – Video can be expensive.

• What you do is… – WYDI approach a college media programme to be a student project. – WYDI ask M’s wife who works in advertising for advice and costings. – WYDI see if we can work humour and/or cats into the story. – WYDI study the Kona story for lessons. – WYDI see if we can use actors or cartoons instead of filming people who don’t want to be filmed.
