External Inspection Prior to Entry1.0 Foundation/Supports

1.1

Inspect the cylindrical skirt’s fireproofed insulating concrete for evidence of cracking, spalling (inner and outer surfaces), or defective seal at the top edge.

1.2Remove small sections of fireproofed concrete insulation (if necessary) and inspect support for corrosion.

1.3 Check for settlement around perimeter of tower.

1.4

Check the anchor bolts and nuts for corrosion or evidence of failure, and observe the condition of the concrete around the bolts.

2.0 Ladders, Platforms, Handrails and Davits2.1 Check ladder supports and clips.

2.2Look for pitting and holes, missing bolts, paint failure and broken or weakened handrails and mid-rails.

2.3 Check for loose toe-boards or defective grating or platform plates.

2.4 Inspect grating for corrosion-caused thinning of bars and failure of welds.

2.5 Inspect safety chain for corrosion, functioning and length.

Check Davits for deformity from misuse or overloading. Davits must be load tested.Check angle support welds to columns for corrosion under insulation where water collects. Remove the necessary insulation to permit inspection for this condition.Inspect the attachment of platform frame to supports and supports to tower for corrosion and weld failure.Check reinforcing pads where platform supports are attached to shell or roof.Inspect the surface that platform plate or grating rests on, for thinning and holes.

3.0 Insulation

3.1Visually inspect the general condition and effectiveness of the insulation on the shell and heads.

3.2Check openings around man-ways, nozzles, and brackets for complete seal to prevent the entry of water.

3.3 Ensure insulation ties or retainer strips are intact and tight.

3.4 Look for evidence of weathering or cracking of the weather-coat.

4.0 Bottom Dome

4.1Inspect the bottom head for pitting gouging and cracking

4.2Inspect the packing condition of the center pipe with the bottom head for tightnessUT measurement- Bottom head and NozzlesInspect the bottom head for pitting gouging and cracking

2.0 Top Dome

2.1Internal Erosion/Cracking/Corrosion (scales, pits, buildup) Describe location, appearance and depth.

2.2 Excessive scale presence. Describe2.3 Weld condition/corrosion2.4 UT measurement- Top head

2.5Check the condition of attachment and welds (Includes Lift lugs, platform supports etc.) for cracks

2.6 Check the condition of insulation

2.7

2.8

3.0 Shell and Nozzles

3.1Check the shell wall for corrosion, pits, cracking, bulge and any mechanical damage.

3.2 UT measurements-shell and attachments

3.3 Inspect inner surface of shell nozzles for thinning and pitting.

3.4 Check the tell-tail or weep holes in the reinforcing pads for evidence of leakageDP or WFMPI test the seam, nozzle and attachment welds for cracksMeasure the depth of pitting corrosion on each course.Inspect existing protective coatings for damage, deterioration, and disbonding.Visually inspect the shell plates and seams for indications of leakage.Survey the shell to check for roundness and plumb.Check gasket faces on all flanges including the man-way nozzles and covers.Hammer-test all small nozzlesCheck man-way cover hinge pins for binding.

Lines, Instrument Leads and ConduitVisually inspect and hammer-test all small piping, including instrument piping, level gage connections, vent and drain fittings, and sample connections.Note the condition of all conduits attached to the column or platforms for lighting, instrument, and thermocouple leads.Look for exposed wires, missing coverplates, broken fittings, and improper support

6.1MPI test all seam, nozzle and attachment welds for cracking

6.2 Check the external insulation is in good condition

7.0Check all bolts used for closure are in good condition (Sample one bolt for tensile test)

8.0 Check all gaskets are renewed in kind
