Preface

Intuitive understanding of the truth about people is

the synonym, one can find in a dictionary for the word

Insight. Our aim of publishing this magazine is to make

our colleagues, friends and students understand their own

merit by delving into their psyche and tap out what lies

within as a carbon coal. Insight magazine serves the

purpose of making those carbon coal as sparkling

diamonds.

“A Writer gets to live yet another life every time

she creates a new story”

We find pleasure in consolidating numerous articles

under different genres contributed by various creators of

our College. Hope this volume would catch the spirit of

the readers and quench their thirst for Edutainment.

With the Blessings, guidance and non-stop support

of our respected Correspondent Thiru.A.K.Ilango and

Principal Dr.N.Raman, it becomes possible for us to

venture in new avenues of Knowledge, Wisdom and fetch

the Success.

STOP THE WAR!

Sometimes Sunny!

Sometimes Windy!

Sometimes Rainy!

You teach us that

Change is the Only Permanent thing in the World.

You Stood as the Dictator,

by Your Heavy down pour

cancelling Matches.

We yearn for

The Showers now.

Why this Punishment?!

not even able to

Sense the Scent of the Scanty Rainfall?

„Petrichor‟ – the smell of the Soil after Rain.

The Meaning seems new to many.

We Fear, in the forthcoming years

the term „Water‟ too, will seem

new to the New Generation.

Will there become a situation like,

Water! Water! Water! only in paper and

Only in Elite Homes and in Ration Shops?

The Riverbeds‟ names will be changed permanently as

Sahara I, Sahara II, ....

LONGING LOVE

A Short Verse of a Great Man

A Man with a Normal Birth

Notorious in His Childhood

Fearless in His Answers

Smart with His Escapism

Fate makes Him Illiterate

But Chance gives Him Princess (Wife)

Adulthood of Him was Speakable

Days moved on with Precious Gift (Daughter)

Years passed with His Manlihood

Except His Height nothing changes

He is a good caretaker of His Gift

TRIBUTE TO MY MOTHER

Mom, from the time I was really young,

I realized I had someone... You,

Who always cared?

Who always protected me?

Who was always there for me no matter what?

You taught me right from wrong,

And pushed to do the right thing,

Even when it was hard to do.

You took care of me when I was sick,

And your love helped me gain strength.

You had rules,

And I learned that when I obeyed them,

My life was simpler, better, richer.

You were and are

THE UNACHIEVABLE

The learning continues…

In the journey of life,

The journey may end, but learning never ends!

The learning continues…

Every day, every time, every person

A teacher to everyone has something to teach!

We learn, learn and learn

Have to till the eternal sleep!

Though we have centuries to live,

There are many to acquire!

Learning starts from the birth and forms the life indeed,

The uncultured transformed into cultured,

Vices transmuted into virtues,

Refinement, insight, wisdom, the noble results of learning!

Complete learning, the unachievable!

The learning continues…

For being my life‟s role model

When I consider that you have taught me

And reflect the kind of person you are

“I want to be like you

I want to be like you”

Smart, interesting, confident

Positive, unpretentious

“I want to be like you

I want to be like you”

Well reformed and easy to understand,

“I want to be like you”

Giving your time, talent and energy

Gentle, sentimentally, instrumentally,

Entity, dignity and meant to be infinity

Thank you teachers for giving the goals

To shoot for.

A POSITIVE WORLD

The uniqueness of the poem is that it turns a pessimistic view of the

world into something hopeful and optimistic if only we care to look

at it in a different way.

I am a part of a lost generation

And I refuse to believe that

I can change the world

I realise this may be a shock but

“Happiness comes from within”

Is a lie, and

“Money will make me happy”

So in 30 years I will tell my children

They are not the most important thing in my life

My employers know that

I have my priorities straight because

Work

Is more important than

Family

If I tell you this

Once upon a time

Families stayed together

But this will not be true in my era

This is a quick fix society

Experts tell me

Page 14: INSIGHT - Kongu Arts and Science College · 2019. 4. 17. · Hira Gulbeen II M.A. S. Chandhini II M.A. P. Priyanga II M.A. M ... magazine in the hands of readers, we take pride in

30 years from now, I will be celebrating the 10th

anniversary of my

divorce

I cannot concede that

I will live in a country of my own making

In the future

Environmental destruction will be the norm

No longer can it be said that

My peers and I care about this Earth

It will be evident that

My generation is apathetic and lethargic

It is foolish to presume that

There is Hope.

Just simply read the poem backwards to turn the Pessimist world

into an Optimistic one. (Courtesy of Facebook)

THE STORY OF A SIMPLE HERO

She thought that all „Heroes‟ wore capes and were tall and

handsome.

“Get her married. She is old enough now” they said.

“No. She wants to study” said her father.

In her pot-bellied, balding, diabetic father, she found a „Hero‟ of

another kind.

EVERLASTING EPIC

(This poem is about an Epic created by the Holy Spirit)

A mesmerizing angel from the Epic

gave a beautiful meaning.

It‟s me, the beautiful meaning from

My mesmerizing mom,

I consider this birth of mine

A gift, for, I get the inspiration

To compose poems about you- My Everlasting Epic (Granny)

Your wisdom, innocence, perseverance and

Above all your love, simplicity and sacrifice

Makes me look with astonishment.

No replacement is possible!

You are our family Epic (Grandma) – an Everlasting one.

Miss you Nanna.

Education not only depends on self interest

It also depends on one‟s circumstances.

So everyone must support education

Both economically and socially

AN EVERYDAY STORY

This is a story about four people:

Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done

And everybody was asked to do it.

Everybody was sure somebody would do it

Anybody could have done it,

But nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that

Because it was Everybody‟s job.

Everybody thought anybody could do it.

But nobody resented.

Everybody blamed somebody, when actually

Nobody asked anybody.

A QUESTION TO MY SOUL

The shoulders that I am today never throw me away

Emotional bond bonded with thee, never fades

The tears show the yearning of my past

Scandalizing fact of today is, am grown up.

I wonder what the difference between mother and love is.

Numerous positions approaching me obviously.

But the soul was in need of your care, being your child

Like a bullet guard you are guarding me.

A conception makes me blank and confused that

Can I be better mother like thee?

No matter how the situation gets worse

Being your daughter, I had never got a curse.

My dear soul, Are you around me?

I am feeling your presence even after your destiny.

EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN

Men are not better than Women

Women are not better than men

Both complement each other

This is the truth forever.

Women had been marked as slave

Now they have become brave.

They were regarded as a birth and cooking machine

Now each one of them is on a life mission.

We never gave them equal power,

We were like the cold that made them shiver.

But make no mistake, times have changed now

They will achieve their aim somehow.

They even considered themselves submissive

But now they have become progressive.

They have lived their lives with shame

Now they have started to achieve the fame.

The creature is seen, not heard,

Died and made men the Gold.

She is innocent but courageous,

Can turn the whole world down.

Fights for her rights determined by men,

Struggles hard and remains silent,

Bears the brunt of frustration.

POET LAUREATES

The word laureate means „crowned with laurel‟. The

expression dates back to Ancient Rome, where a successful person

was traditionally crowned with a wreath of laurel leaves.

In Britain, the position of „Poet Laureate‟ was created as a

Royal Office in 1668 with the appointment of John Dryden by King

Charles II. The position was traditionally held for life, but is now

restricted to ten years. When it becomes vacant the prime minister

has a list of names drawn up and the monarch chooses a new

laureate. The poet laureate‟s main task is to write odes to celebrate

royal birthdays, marriages and important states occasions. Poet

PRIDE FOR LITERATURE

Rare happenings happen always on this beautiful Earth.

Sometimes, getting an honour too happens shockingly and

surprisingly and this too is about the rare moment in the history.

This article is about the people who got both The Oscar (Academy

award) and Nobel prize. The two persons who made history and

literature proud are George Bernard Shaw and Bob Dylan.

George Bernard Shaw, an Anglo-Irish playwright was born an

Irish on 26.07.1856 in Dublin, Ireland. Not only a playwright, he

was also a critic, political activist and an essayist. He then moved to

London in 1876. His influence on Western theatre, culture and

politics exceeded from 1880 to his death. He was inspired by

Henrik Ibsen to introduce Realism into English writings mainly on

his drama to implement and show his political, social and religious

ideas. He opposed vaccination, supported vegetarianism and

organized religious groups. All these show us a typical man who

has got many critics. He had produced more than 60 plays among

which some are Man and Superman (1903), Pygmalion (1913)

and Saint Joan (1923). But his initial plays were refused but after

few years they are played in many theatres.

Some of his plays were translated and enacted/staged in

many countries. He was the close friend of Winston Churchill.

His nominations for Nobel Prize were rejected for more than four

times. At last, by his play which was translated in Swedish

language proved to Swedish Nobel Prize committee that he is

worth? He was also awarded Oscar or Academy Award for the

film Pygmalion (1938) for the category Writing Adapted

Screenplay. He became the first person to get Academy Award and

Nobel Prize. He was leading dramatist of his generation. He was

considered as great dramatist after William Shakespeare.

The other person was Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan was born in May

24, 1941 in Duluth, U.S. His first name was Robert Allen

Zimmmerman. His other name was Bob Landy, Elson Gunnn,

Blind Boy Gount, Robert Milkwook Thomas, Jack Frost etc., He is

an American song writer, singer, writer and artist. He is popular for

his art, music and culture for more than five decades. His first

album was Bob Dylan in 1962. But he started his singing and

writing works in 1959. His last album was the Fallen Angles in

2016. His musical styles were on folk, blues, rock, country and

gospel. He had won 13 Grammy Awards, Golden Globe Award in

2001, GMA Dove Award in 1988, Academy Award (Oscar) in

2000 for best original song for the film “Wonder Boys”, five times

inducted for Grammy hall of fame and also inducted for Rock and

Roll Hall Presidential Medal of freedom from Brack Obama in

2012, Putlizer Prize specialisation in 2008, National Medal of Arts

and at last Nobel Prize on October 13 2006. He is the first

musician to get Nobel Prize.

The Swedish Nobel committee awarded him by saying “for having

created new poetic expression within the great American song

tradition”. It is the first time since 1933 that the Nobel committee

of his songs and six book of his art. He has been the subject of

many biographies and critical studies. He became the second person

to win both Nobel Prize and academy award after George Bernard

Shaw. He also has his own webpage “bobdylan.com”.

follows the story line of any typical bollywood movie, I wish I could

say there were dramatic deviations from this fact, but there wasn‟t.

However, the book was still a great read! Prior to the couple‟s

decision to get married, Bhagat offers the readers an in depth look

into premarital relationship of two, caught surprise. He executed this

is a very tasteful and natural way. The story flowed well and there

was a good balance between their life before waiting and their

mission to make the seven rounds of fire.

Bhagat did a fantastic job of introducing the readers to both

character families and in instances where both parties were present,

the juxtaposition exuded tension and discomfort that definitely

resonated with the readers. This novel was very much about family

and how important it is to get the families approval before

embarking on something with a significant other. After reading this

book, it is clear why couples in India enjoy it so much. It also shows

where the younger generation stands in terms of relationship and

love marriage.

Overall, this was an entertaining and light read. If you enjoy

bollywood stories with a slightly more realistic feel, you will most

probably enjoy this story.

FATHER‟S LOVE

In a village, there lived a poor couple who had a little

daughter. She was like an angel. Her name was Shakshi. Her mother

passed away soon after her birth. Her father took the place of her

mother and took good care of her. He brought her up as a brilliant

child. In spite of his poverty, he worked hard and even got some

debts to give her good education. Shakshi understood her father's

situation and studied hard. She was the first rank holder in her class.

Years passed by and Shakshi reached 10th standard. She

studied harder. As a result of her hard work and determination, she

got the first mark in her school in the final exam. Both Shakshi and

her father felt very happy about the results. Shakshi‟s aim was to

become an architect. She studied well in higher secondary with her

father‟s. As the saying goes, hard work never fails, Shakshi

completed her higher secondary with flying colours and secured first

rank in the state. Shakshi‟s father‟s joy knew no bounds. Her father

presented her the beautiful dress that she wanted so much.

Shakshi's dream came true and she joined Architecture in as

esteemed institution. Her father continued his hard work and he was

and was friendly with everyone.

Even in college she maintained her grade and she was the

was very happy to hear a lot of good comments about his daughter

from her professors. He was very proud of his daughter. Shakshi

reached her final year. She was in need of her final semester fees.

Her beloved father donated his kidney in a hospital to a patient in a

legal way and got some amount. He gave it for his daughter fee.

Shakshi‟s graduation day arrived. She got selected in an

esteemed company as an architectural designer with a salary of 1

lakh per month. Her father's lifelong struggle and hard work made

her a respectable person. He was waiting eagerly, heart filled with

joy and enthusiasm to receive her daughter after the graduation. He

believed that his daughter would be back home as an architectural

designer but to his shock an ambulance came with the dead of

Shakshi. On seeing her dead body, Shakshi‟s father lost his

consciousness.

When he came back to his senses, he came to know that his

daughter Shakshi was in love with her classmate for the past two

years. Her lover had died in an accident three days ago. When her

lover died, Shakshi couldn‟t bear the sudden shock and took her

THIRTEEN UNKNOWN WOMEN WRITERS

We all know that there are unfortunately, lots of amazing

writers that remain obscure and unknown. Sometimes these writers

eventually break into mainstream like Jennifer Egan or Chimamnda

Ngozi Adichie; sometimes they‟ve rediscovered years after their

death, like Zora Neale Harston or Emily Dickinson; not only are

women who write on subjects like relationship or families often

relegated to the category of ”chick lit” with a disobedient sniff, but

even when “serious fiction” and “literature”, they‟ve still much less

likely to be reviewed in major publication or get the kind of

exposure their male counter parts get. Here are thirteen women

writers who you may not have heard of, but who might just blow

you away.

ZOYA PIRZAD

Zoya Pirzad is an Iranian author whose novels, „I Will Turn

Off the Lights‟, „Thing We Left Unsaid‟ are international best

sellers. She is an Iran‟s Armenian community pre Islamic

revolution. In her novel she has portrayed the bored suburban

housewife who reflects the themes that women everywhere can

relate to. It‟s an understated gem that hasn‟t gotten much attention in

the United State, which is probably why most of Pirzad‟s other

novels haven‟t been translated yet.

STEPHANIE VAUGHAN

Stephanie Vaughan has been hailed as “a writer‟s writer, but

think everyone should dive into her prose”. Her short story

collection sweet talk may have been published two decades ago, but

it remains just as moving today, from the first story, “Able, Baker,

Charlie, dog”, which is an understand family portrait, to the last,

“Dog Heaven” which is a masterpiece. The collection deserves a

place among the classics.

DJUNA BARNES

Djuna Barnes was an early feminist writer and illustrator

from the 1920s, who was well ahead of her time in embracing the

idea that the personal, is political. In addition to her journalistic

endeavours, including a dramatic piece in support of suffragettes

being force fed while on hunger strike, she also made waves with

her novel night wood. Barnes is largely an remembered today.

JULIA ALUAREZ

Born in New York city but raised in her parents‟ native

Dominican Republic, Julia Aluarez‟s debut novel „How the Gavcia

Girls Lost their accents‟, which tells the story of a Dominican

immigrant family by going in reverse chronological order, got a lot

of attention when it was published in 1991. In the years, since.

Aluarez has faded from view, however, and although her books are

still in print, they haven‟t had the lasting attention they undoubtedly

deserve.

CATHERINE O‟FLYNN

A British novelist with an eye for the idiosyncrasies of

modern life, Catherine O‟Flynn‟s novels have received plenty of

critical praise, and her novel „What was Lost‟ was even long listed

for the man booker prize in 2007. Despite all of this, she isn‟t

widely known, at least not in the states.

JOUMANA HADDED

Most famous for her slim volume „I Killed Scheherazade‟,

Joumana Hadded is also a political activist and poet from Lebanon.

Yet even her infamous „I Killed Scheherazade‟, which criticizes

both gender roles in Arab culture as well as Western portrayals of

Arab women, is barely read in America. Provocative and passionate,

the book is a must read for feminists everywhere.

ANDREA LEE

After writing numerous short stories for „The New Yorker‟,

Andrea Lee published a short story collection, „Interesting Women‟

and two novels, „Sarah Philips‟ and „Lost Hearts in Italy‟, that

explore femininity, race, and class with style and assurance. She has

also published a memoir, but none of her work has gained her

lasting attention.

MAEVE BRENNAN

Maeve Brennan was a 20th

century short story writer and

journalist who immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1934.

She was a frequently contributor to the New Yorker where she wrote

to column called “the long-winded lady” that satirized New York

high society. Her short stories, on the other hand often dealt with

themes of online vulnerability. Considered one of the most

important voices of the Irish Diaspora, many of Brennan‟s works

remained unpublished until several years after her death, including

her novella „The Visitor‟, about the insidious effect of family pride

Brennan remains largely unknown today.

MITSUYE YAMADA

Poet and activist Mitsuye Yamada wrote her first book of

poems while in a Japanese internment camp in Idaho during World

War II, but the book, camp notes and other poems was not published

until the 1970s. A feminist dedicated to addressing the particular

concerns of Asian women, her work is both insightful and political,

and it deserved to be remembered.

SHIRLEY JACKSON

Chances are good remember reading Jackson‟s famous short

story “The Lottery” in high school at point. In 1940s precursor to the

hunger games still other than thin story Jackson has largely dropped

off the culture radar, even as her male contemporaries like John

Cheever live on. So if you‟ve never heard her novel the haunting of

The historical fiction and stories about kings and courts, Indu

Sundaresan is someone you must check out. Her Taj Trilogy, set in

the court of the mughal emperor during Mughal rule in India, is a

sweeping saga of power, betrayal and true love. Her books are not

only impeccably researched they bring details of the past to life.

NAWAIL EI SAADAWI

Nawal El Saadawi is an Egyptian activist, feminist and a

founder of the arab women‟s solidarity association. She has also

written a dozen novels and short story collection, many of which

have been translated into English. Her works often deals with issue

facing Egyptian women and muslim women still, though she

provokes plenty of international reaction, her works are largely

obscure in the United States.

ANNE CARSON

Anne Carson‟s novel “An Autobiography of Red” would

be based on the myth of the Labors of herakles. The myth by

centering the story on the monster Geryon from the tenth Labor and

setting the whole thing in a roughly modern age. It‟s a multi-layered

book that received glowing praise from critics and big name authors,

I HAVE A CHOICE ABOUT TODAY

I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the

clock strikes midnight. I have responsibilities to fulfill today and

it is important. My job is to choose what kind of day, I am going

to have.

Today, I can complain that weather is rainy or I can be happy

that grass is getting watered.

Today, I can feel that I have less money or I can spend wisely to

avoid wasting money.

Today, I can cry because the roses have thorns or I can celebrate

that the thorns have roses.

Today, I can mourn my lack of friend or I can excitedly search

for new friends.

Today, I can complain because I have to go to school or I can

fulfill the quest for knowledge.

Today, I can whine because I have to go to work or I can shout

out of joy because I have got a work to do.

Today, I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do household

works or I can appreciate that I have a place to call home.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I

am sculptor who gets to shape.

What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of

day I will have!
